At the half-way point, I'm thinking along the lines of a 6 or 7. I really enjoyed it to start with, and tracks 4 and 5 were highlights, but it seems to occupy a middle ground between shoegazing and dream-pop, without entirely achieving the supposed point of either. But we shall see.

I say 'half-way point', that's in terms of tracks. The long tracks seem to be loaded onto the second half of the album. I fear it could drag a bit, but here's hoping Spiritualized can prove me wrong!

Anyways, I always heard that Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space was supposed to be their meisterwork, so I might check that out after this has finished.

EDIT: Okay, finished listening. You know how I hoped they could prove me wrong? MISSION SUCCESSFUL. Instead of dragging, the longer track times gave the blissed-out, shimmering melodies time to develop and grow, and track 11 (Sway) in particular was beautiful. Final track could have done with a better vocal part, but otherwise, second half boosts my opinion of the album up to a 7.5/8 out of 10.

DELIBERATE DOUBLE POST for purposes of clarity.

Random Number Generator gives us a 7. That's Gackt - Re:Born as recommended by Solstace.

So yeah, get your Visual Kei hats on and see you in 3 days. Hopefully. If I can avoid sucking at life.

Speaking of which, to all those who have already abandoned the club because I'm useless and slow at updating it... please come back! Contrary to apparent evidence, I don't want it to die tongue.

EDIT: Just for the hell of it, here's a list of the remaining seven albums yet to be picked:

  1. Owen Pallet - Heartland
  2. Ben Frost - Theory Of Machines
  3. Girl Talk - Feed The Animals
  4. Relient K - Forget And Not Slow Down
  5. The Justified Ancients Of Mu-Mu - 1987 (What The Fuck Is Going On?)
  6. Venetian Snares - Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding
  7. Billy Talent - Billy Talent

So, if I keep up with the every 3 days thing from here on in, that means we can pick new albums in 3 weeks. Yay!

Gackt isn't really Visual Kei anymore. At least, he doesn't sound like the majority of Visual Kei bands. People still call him Visual Kei for whatever reason.

And yet again, listen to the tracks in order, as they do sorta flow into each other.

Okay, listening to the first few track of the Gackt album, my initial thoughts are that I really like this guy's guitar playing but don't care so much for his singing voice.

...okay, he's really good at playing the guitar, but I feel like his style is a bit too... showy? for my tastes.

Also that weird wavery thing he does with his voice bugs me.

And... auto-tune on "Ghost"? Really?!

Just a heads up, there's even more Autotune on Koakuma Heaven, which is track 11.

I can't stand auto tune.

Unless it's "I'm On A Boat", but that's a special case. tongue

Anyway, the feeling I'm getting overall is that Gackt is very technically accomplished but stylistically not really my cup of tea.

I listened to spiritualized the day after it was posted, but neglected to comment. I thought it was low-key, but really besides that uninteresting. The use of electronics were things I've heard a million times before and the tunes used also seemed rather generic.

Listening to Gackt. There's quite a bit of stuff here that would make good car music. He's not that good in the ballads, though

Previously, this was all I knew about Gackt.

The album so far is better than that. But I'm only three tracks in at the moment.

I haven't liked most of the albums posted so far.

I swear I'm not usually this musically picky.

Fun Fact: Originally, I was half-seriously considering using an atonal album for my suggestion.

Probably won't like mine, too.

Fun Fact: Most people have a much broader definition for atonal than I do and Soltace's album probably doesn't qualify.

We're nearing the time for picking the next album, looks like.

I'm talking serialism and dodecaphony, and other kinds of compositions that avoid implying a tonal center.

Oh. In that case it does. Carry on.

Also, I'm considering suggesting a few late 20th century composers for your listening pleasure.

My train of thought is that, recommending stuff that is considered by 99% of the public to sound like shit is probably akin to trolling this thread >.<

Anyways, I'll listen to Gackt later tonight and then it'll be new album time.

I'm currently trying to decide between Boards of Canada's Campfire Headphase, About Tess' Beautiful, and Explosions in the Sky's The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place or All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone for my next suggestion.
