The TV Tropes Album Exchange Club

Okay, I ran this idea briefly through the Music board and it seems to have gone down quite well, but I think it belongs here, so here we are.

Welcome, one and all, to the TV Tropes Album Exchange Club. The basic idea of this coven is (I hope) to widen the musical horizons of all participants and encourage open and enlightening discussion about why we like the music we like, and how we react to music that we're perhaps not so familiar with. It's basically like a book club... but with music.

The Basic Rules (a few points still need sorting out):

• If you're interested in joining, post here saying so, along with one (and only one!) album that you want the rest of the club to listen to.
• After a decent number of people have joined, we can get the real process under way. One album will be chosen from the resulting list, either at random or just by alphabetical order/something similar. The person who recommended that album posts a link to a free stream or download of that album, and can say why they chose it or give a short description of it if they so wish. Preferably not Grooveshark links please, it's been causing a few problems.
• All members of the group will listen to this album at least once over the course of a number of days (how many? We'll vote on that first!).
• After that time's over, we reconvene in this thread and everyone gives their reactions, thoughts, what they liked, what they thought was awful, et cetera. At the end of the day, a new album is chosen.

So there we are. First things first then: Are you interested? If so, choose an album for the club to listen to, and welcome aboard.

Secondly, how long do you think would be a good amount of time to spend listening to each album? One day? Three? A week? Your opinions please! We need to come to a consensus before we get this show on the road.

For the record, I'd agree with with three days being enough time, and the album I'm recommending is Owen Pallett - Heartland.

Interesting. I like that so far all the artists here are pretty obscure as far as I know. Hopefully I'll be able to do this justice.

How do we decide what album we're listening to?

Well I've got each album so far recommended in a spread sheet, in the order they've been recommended. I'll probably just use a random number generator to choose each one. Or, I could just order them using something unbiased, like alphabetical order of the first track title.

Got any other ideas?

I like the random number generator. More fair, I think.

By the way, thanks to everyone who's taken part so far, I'm really looking forward to this! I reckon we can start listening to the first album on Monday.

So far, 3 days seems to be the most popular option for how long to listen to each album, but some people haven't stated either way, so if they could, that would be nice . Anyway, we shall see.

Agreed, most people here will find the time to listen to an album within 3 days. Also means the others aren't waiting too long.

I'll join! I suggest Relient K - Forget and Not Slow Down. It's not religous so no one should feel uncomfortable. Most of the album is break-up songs.

Alright, my rec is 1987 (What the Fuck is Going on?) by the Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu.

All but one of the songs are available on Youtube ("The Queen and I" is really hard to find, sorry) and if it gets picked I'll link to them in order.

So it is! Don't worry, I hadn't forgotten, I was just leaving it as late as possible to see if we got any more members, but evidently not .

So, with the 10 albums listed in the order that the titles were posted, the random number generator gives us... a 6.

Which means that the first album for the club to listen to is Tiamat - Wildhoney.

Lordnecronus, that means you're up! We'll be needing a link. And we'll have 3 days to listen to it from when the link's posted.

I'm in. Album submitted is Venetian Snares - Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding.

Here's Wildhoney for you all to listen to:

The tracks segue into each-other seamlessly, with the exception of a brief gap between "Gaia" and "Visionaire", so it's best if you stick them all in a playlist in order.

As you've probably guessed by now (due to me being the one to recommend it), Wildhoney is metal; however, its focus is on atmosphere as opposed to being heavy/fast/whatever metal generally focuses on, and it has strong influences from psychedelic and progressive rock, particularly Pink Floyd and King Crimson. There are death growls on some of the tracks, which will probably be off-putting for some around here, but I feel they're used quite tastefully (ie. not like Cannibal Corpse) so hopefully they won't be too much of a problem.

Also, the cover art◊ is awesome.

Track 8 wouldn't download, for whatever reason. But listening to the rest of them now.

'Kay so so far it's some very nice contemplative moments interspersed with "RAAAAARGH LOOK HOW SINISTER OUR CHORDS ARE, BLLLEEEEERRRRF" not liking it, not hating it, kinda meh right now.

on track four. Interesting instrumental thusfar, still don't like the singer.
