Quick question: If it's possible that he didn't like how Shinn was rewritten, then how come Fukuda didn't complain how the games treated Kira? For example, him getting called out by Kamille, Quatre, and Shinji of all people (in SRWA 3), or by Amuro, Char, Loran, etc. in SRWZ?

@Night This might explain why the Star Wars prequels has such crappy acting, is because of Lucas' writing.

To be honest while I don't think anyone could have really delivered a good performance in the role with Lucas standing right there, there are definitely times where you can see Anakin's actor conveying their personal disapproval of the character rather than whatever they were aiming at.

[up][up][up]Pretty sure we've actually discussed that very thing happening in the thread before.

But even if it didn't, so what? Acting like any of the SRW games have a special insight into the characters they're using is...well it's not quite stupid but it's getting really close. They have a special insight into what the fans want a lot of the time, but what the fans want is rarely reflective of some special understanding of the character. Usually the exact opposite in fact; c.f. fanfic Sephiroth.

[up]Exactly. SRW is designed to please the fanbase—and the loudest members of it at that. Which is a godawful way to tell any sort of story with any sort of accuracy. If they did that to say, the Marvel films, then Thor would have been resolved by Thor and Loki going in for gay incest.

As for Fukuda not commenting on some of the changes, I don't get what the OP's trying to ask there. A non-comment is exactly that, a non-comment. It means nothing beyond that he didn't comment on it.

[up][up][up][up][up] Haven't we been over this like, twice already?

IIRC, Alpha 3 doesn't give Kira that much shit. I couldn't read a lick of Japanese but it actually seemed like him and Shinji became friends around the time you get to the desert tiger arc or whatever.

In Z, there's a scene where the protagonists had split into two groups, and some bad guys trick both groups into thinking the other half had suddenly become evil. Everyone was giving everyone else the business. Kira just happened to be on one side.

All I know about all this was that, back when I was watching Destiny, several people elsewhere encouraged me to watch Gun X Sword because it's supposed to the guy who made it just ripping SEED/Destiny to pieces. And people loved it.

@Night I think Anakin was awesome whenever he kept his mouth shut and let his eyes convey the emotion. So yeah, I do think any blame lies mostly on the dialogue.

speaking as an srw fan yeah, a lot of srw is basically catering to fanon.

Does that make canon shinn or zShinn worse for it? I dont think so. I view any alterations to plots in an SRW as a direct result of having more people around than originally. In the actual destiny plot, Shinn has almost nothing but poisonous "friends" helping him right down the wrong path (with maybe Lunamaria and Talia as exceptions, but Luna doesnt really have the clout Rey does, and Talia has to follow orders, kinda like Natarle). In SRW, he usually has the aid of far more well-adjusted people who actually have his best interests in mind around to counter Rey and Durandal.

Same happened with shinji back in the Alpha games, he didnt become the horrifically not-adjusted well at all mess we know from Eva Canon because he had people like Ryouma Nagare (original timeline) and Bright Noa to keep him sane.

I like the design of the Bawoo (the green paint job looks better than Gremmy's red one), but I'm still not entirely sure what the point of its separation ability is, I can't really recall it ever making a notable contribution to its battles.

Not quite so in Unicorn's last episode.

The Bawoo's separation serves multiple purposes. First, it's basically a single, giant funnel, letting you attack from multiple directions at once. Second, it serves as an escape mechanism, letting you easily remove the damaged section of your suit and make a quick getaway in mobile armour mode. Third, it turns the machine into a small troop transport, letting it carry a handful of commandos in its secondary cockpit. It's quite versatile.

@Kazuya Prota I wouldn't say that Shinn was hated in Japan; he was popular on his own right, but not on the level of Athrun and especially Kira, who's a long runner on the Newtype polls, alongside with Lacus.

In terms of popularity, Shinn is the Andrew Luck to Kira's Peyton Manning, and when it comes to victories, Athrun is Tom Brady.

@midgetsnowman

Problem is, most members of the fandom/hatedom don't seem display your level of sanity. The number of people I've met who declare the SRW version to be the "real" Shinn and proof that the original series didn't understand him at all is utterly ridiculous.

If Shinn was a supposed "deconstruction/subversion" (depends on you define "deconstruction") of the traditional Gundam protagonist (much like what 00 did later on), then that means that Kira was a "reinvention/reconstruction" of that also, given that he went from MSG!Amuro in Seed, to Zeta!Amuro and from episode 39 onwards, CCA!Amuro in Destiny?

Isn't deconstructing a traditional Gundam protagonist basically deconstructing a deconstruction?

That is what everyone has been asking for years. And with the HG releases of full cloth and the regular X-1 it REALLY a will never happen as the money has already been made.

Sorry if this is a herring, but what's the music that plays during the end of MSG when Amuro is psychically coordinating everyone's evacuation of A Bao Qu and the White Base and which gets a remix during the Time Travel bit in Gundam Unicorn Episode 07?

@reconguista: With the time and the influnce of Gundam in the anime in general the "average Gundam protagonist"is a arquetipe in his own right. A teenager with issues is forced to engage in a war and and despite some angst the protagonist end the series like a better person. Amuro and Kira are basically the defintion of the arquetipe. Kamille is the most prominent example but his Cruel Twist Ending in the end of Zeta...well, poor man.

I like Amuro, he is both a man of Earth and the colonies so he understands their faults and their benefits. And he is a patient man, one who can wait until humanity is ready instead of trying genocide.

Also Spacenoid "Soul held down by gravity" is bunk because being born in Space didn't stop them from being assholes like everyone else.

There does seem to be something to the "souls held down by gravity" thing in that we don't see anyone exhibiting Newtype abilities without them having spent at least some time in space. The only case that's really ambiguous is, amusingly, Lalah, as we know she was a war refugee picked up by the Flanagan Institute due to her abilities, but we don't really know where she came from before that.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

[up]The only truly worthwhile thing about 'souls held down by gravity' is that it just sounds cool, in a sort of faux-symbolic way.

[up] I think there may be something to it, as Amuro was apparently hiding from visions of Lalah on Earth, which Char Quattro actually called him out on, if I remember Zeta correctly. Gravity suppresses force ghosts?

It was made clear throughout the Universal Century that Newtypes were a reaction by humanity to their new environment. It was based on the then-cutting-edge reaearch into space giving you psychic powers.
