Necro. :D.

I was just reading through the first issue again. Two things to say- Art Evolution Hell yes, and I forgot a lot about Nao's backstory. Tis all.

Nao is getting so badass right now her backstory doesn't matter.

Yeah, I just wish it wasn't commented on so much. Some subtlety would be nice.

You can only use Show, Don't Tell when you can actually show. The character's expressions just SUCK

Not entirely true. you don't need expressions for this. Just remove Fukunaga's commenting on Nao's character development, and we have a perfect case of showing, not telling.

Also, the expressions have gotten a lot better. Go reread the first chapter.

It would be in character for Fukunaga to comment on something like that though. I personally think having other characters react to a change in a character is a perfectly valid way of acknowledging character development, especially this is not a case of Informed Ability or anything - we, the readers, see Nao change, we see concrete actions and words from her that indicate her development, and so we already know that she's changed - other people's reactions towards her is just another way of solidifying that development. For example, in A Christmas Carol, when Scrooge changes at the end into a kind man, the author doesn't just use Scrooge's actions to show character development, he uses the other characters' reactions towards him as well.

Finally took the opportunity to catch up... this round just gets more interesting the fewer chairs remain. Is it just me, or does it seem like Yokoya may be trying to plan things out further than the game is actually likely to last given the number of chairs left?

I've enjoyed this series a lot myself. Say whatever you will, you have to respect a series that can turn musical freaking chairs into a game of intense strategy. Some games can get hard to follow, when that happens I just sit back and see what comes around.

My only major complaint has little to do with the series itself, and more with the recent scanlators using Japanese terms where we'd gotten used to the English ones (Gaya over Extra, Samue over Robes [this one in particular, since Samue's too easily mistakable for an actual name])

^ Yeah, to be honest it seems like a poor translation choice. Especially since gaya doesn't actually add japanese flavor imho, but more like 'it's japanese, we have to keep japanese words because that's what all the cool scanlators do!'. Still, I'm happy they're translating the series and have a very good pace, so they can use whatever words they like as long as they're understandable.

I can deal with japanese words when they are SFX terms. They usually have no english equivalent.

They prolly did the Gaya thing cause 'The Extras Alliance' did not sound as cool XD.

Personally I disagree, but that's a matter of milage. If nothing else, remove one A and we get something else entirely. Gya Alliance just doesn't sound right.

^^ It's not like 'Gaya alliance' sounds particularly cool. It sounds like a Village People tribute band name now that you make me think about it...

^^Funny, I pronounce it more akin to Gaia, like the greek god of earth.

I'll have to agree with AHR here. I've alway pronounced it 'Gaia', and that does sound better than 'extra' alliance.

Not that that's a good reason for failing to do your job as a translator, mind you.

^^ and ^ I know that's the correct pronunciation it was just a bad joke on my part. Heck, that's actually the most natural pronunciation for me, given my native language.

I am totally taking that out of context Gilphon tongue.

I really just wish it hadn't been changed midway through, or by a hastily explained author's note. The only time I really ever truly forgave a translator for that, was when they realized they had been translating a name wrong. Twice.

What about "Spectator Alliance"? That sounds a bit better than "Extras".

I mean, if a term isn't a proper noun, there's no reason not to translate it directly, unless there's no equivalent term in English.

Well, it's supposed to be the sound effect of a crowd, right? Background crowd noise. I don't think there is an English equivalent of that.

In that case, we don't need to translate it literally. The basic meaning of the phrase is an alliance of the losers or spectators, and the SFX basically carries that meaning. Which means that the more accurate translation would be to use that meaning instead of the surface words.

I pronounced it Gaia, too. I was just going for the joke (the "gya" spelling was intentional). But I still think "Extra" and "Extra Alliance" sound better.

EDIT: Hm, didn't realize "Gaya" was meant as the sound effect for background noise. "Chatter Alliance?"

While I'm thinking about it, what did the "NG" when Yokoya & Harimoto were doing their trade-offs stand for, anyway?

I just recently started reading this (A_H_R made me.), and my first reaction is this:

Liar Game Drinking Game! Every time you see a character's jaw drop in the manga, take a shot! You will be drunk before the chapter's end!

And I am not kidding. Go to a random chapter now and read through it. The mangaka friggin loves those shots.

My only goal in life is to ensure that Mousa dies of a stress-induced heart attack by the age of 23. READ THIS
