Admittedly the manga did a good job making me feel sorry for Shigechi. I mean, kid's a little dumb and greedy, but man he didn't deserve that. I guess that the good that comes of it is the eventual downfall of Kira, but still, damn.

I don't understand how Kars was defeated. Did Joseph do anything?

Kars was Hoist by His Own Petard.

Joseph held up the Red Stone instinctively and Kars's super-Hamon made it react, causing the volcano to erupt. The arm and the rocks were completely luck.

The arm thing bugged me a bit until I rewatched it - At first I thought Von Stroheim had something to do with it. As Joseph admits, most of that was entirely luck.

That being sad, he lied about planning it just to drive Kars crazy. Which after everything is fair enough. Joseph was good at reading people, real good it seems.

The best part is, if Kars hadn't been distracted by Joseph he could have escaped before he got flung all the way out of the atmosphere. Joseph defeated a god through dumb luck and trash talk.

But wasn't the whole point of his fight with Eisidisi that he was only faking being out-thought to out-think Eisidisi and lure him into a trap?

Joseph sounded genuinely shocked/annoyed when Esidisi pulled that on him.

But by the end of the fight he's still turned it around in his favor and used the "Next you'll say" on him properly, which makes me think he'd been stringing Eisidisi along the entire time. There were also several points in the Whammu fight where he seemed fucked but was able to think on his feet and turn a failure into an advantage.

Reminder that Joseph went from being able to outsmart super-genius level Aztec ultra vampires to being fooled into buying $1000 worth of baby supplies by a random store clerk.

To be fair a lot of that was indecisiveness on his part. I mean, he was only looking for stuff to use right there and then so it didn't actually matter which one he picked. He should have just picked one and been done with it.

One thing I just realized.

With Rohan's and Kira's current VA's, they're Cloud and Sephiroth respectively.

A question:

So if I understand this right, Part 7 stars Johnny Joestar, Jonathan's counterpart, Gyro Zeppeli, William or Caesar's counterpart, and Diego Brando, Dio's. So it sounds like a reboot/remake of Part I. The plot hits similar beats.

Is this happening in Part 8? Are there counterparts to Joseph/Jotaro/Jolyne/Giorno. I already know there's a Josuke Higaicantspellhisnameright in there.

Part 7's plot is not all similar to part 1. It follows the Stand User of the 3~4 months of the later parts and a really character-heavy tale about a horse across the United States that is actually a ruse schemed by the president to collect all the pieces of Jesus Christ's corpse.

Otherwise, the counterpart portion holds true in part 8, though more indirectly than 7. Just for starters, the story takes place in Morioh.

We have our protagonist who until only recently went by Josuke, who was revealed early in to be a merging of Yoshikage Kira and another man, his closest friend is Yasuho Hirose, and the Higashikatas' maid goes by the name Nijimura.

The members of the Higashikata family also have had comparisons drawn between them and members of Passionne.

Part 8 is much looser on the whole counterpart thing. Josuke is an an equal mix of Jotaro, Josuke from part IV, and Kira in terms of character design, and he doesn't really have a similar role to any of them. The Higashikatas are very a decently large, wealthy, elite, and eccentric family with a supernatural history, rather than the tiny family unit from part IV. Aside from Kira, Kira's mom, and Josefumi there aren't many straight counterparts.

Interestingly, a lot of the counterparts of the Joestar family exist—From Johnny down to Holly—but Holly is the only only one we're likely to see.

Outside of Josuke, Araki seems to be just mixing and matching his more interesting designs for fun. My instinct is that the similarities won't be really important.

@Soble: There are counterparts, shoutouts, and some plot concepts from PB that are taken in different directions, but overall SBR is NOTHING like part 1 in any conceivable way you can think of. You can't even really call it a re-imagining imo, more like it takes some ideas from PB and tells a wildly different story.

It's much less campy, and tells a much more serious, dramatic, character-driven storyline with more moral ambiguity and a completely different premise from PB; PB was essentially fist of the north star with vampires by the end, SBR is a western about a horse race and may or may not involve the corpse parts of Jesus. Of the three main characters who are counterparts, the only one remotely resembling the original is Diego, and he's still noticeably different. Johnny is nothing like Jonathan.
