How's about Fullmetal Alchemist (manga/Brotherhood anime)? Admittedly, it does go into some very dark places, but it also passes the exciting/uplifting test with flying colours.
What's precedent ever done for us?

EDIT: Nat. Why not suggest Ouran High School Host Club? It's not magic or magical girl, but isn't completely slice of life either. It's comedy, yes, but it has some romance as well.It was already recommended in the thread, and declined.

If she'll do VNs I'd suggest Yo-Jin-Bo. Definitely not slice of life, not primarily a comedy, mostly revolving around romance, but has some magical elements too.

It sounds really more like a case of being stubborn than actually having bad taste, now that I think about it. I'm sure lots of the shows that have been suggested she might like, if only she would actually try them instead of dismissing them out of hand immediately.

^ Urgh, I know that feeling. It makes me feel all horrible and empty inside and drives me to read fanfiction and fanart out of desperation, which is a terrible idea because most fanfics and fanart are shit and it makes me feel even worse.

But then again she apparently doesn't like yaoi, so Hikaru and Kaoru might turn her off.
Again, I think Gakuen Alice would be a perfect fit for her. It's magic, it has more obvious romance than Ouran, it has its comedic moments but has drama as well, it's cute but not too cutesy, the characters have actual magical powers, etc.
