What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

I learned some details about the Bodom Lake massacre, one of the most infamous unsolved murders in Finland. The reason it was so hard to solve, was that when combing the fores for clue, the police ran into not one, not two, not three, but five violent fugitives independently hiding out from the cops in the forest, and not enough forensic evidence to tie any one of them specifically to the crime scene.
I just imagine one team coming in to the HQ glowing, thinking they caught the guy, only to find three other squads there with their own slam dunk suspects.
[ed.] the total was 88 fugitives in the forest, I think only five had serious violent histories. Also, the forensic investigation was hampered by inexperienced police both trampling the scene themselves, but also allowing press and onlookers to do so too. Gotta love 1960's police work.
