The guy who posted the scans said Acny was this and that doesn't make sense because he doesn't have a personality. Simply being the evil asshole in the way does not make a classic villain.
We do have a trope for Classic Villain.
If Acno does count as one then he is a bad one. The guy has no discernable or consistent motivations & goals to make him a good villain. Hell we aren't even told his backstory to get something of a fix on him. What's even badder is that we barely see enough of Acno as it is.
Doffy in comparison has motivations, goals & a backstory so we understand him. He has a distinctive flair & it also helps that a lot of screen time was given to him & he did something of note every time so w have a feeling on him.
We just don't get enough of Acno aside from being murderous & the fact he can't choose whether being stoic or maniacal makes it worse.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."He's on his way to becoming a Generic Doomsday Villain.

Actually, that makes him a Flat Character. Acnologia has enough personality and background to disqualify him as a GDV.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. You'll forgive not many tropers caring about the distinction.
Considering the laconic for flat character includes "generic character" yeah there's not much distinction.
Really GDV means pretty means much flat villain.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
He's a villain, and he's pretty much a GDV or evolved into one.

True. GDV needs a cleanup thread anyway because it's being misused. That's neither here nor there though.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. All in all he's not a very good compelling or interesting character.
Which is a tragedy as he had potential to be a real epic badass.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Yes, there is nothing worse than a wasted good villain.
The thing is Mashima had him on the right path to being an epic badass villain. Then he got more screentime and went downhill from there.

A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh. You say that like he had much of a character to begin with; since pretty much the start he was always some self-proclaimed dragon king who just caused random destruction, hated dragons for a reason that was never explained, and was simply used as a plot device to explain why there aren't any dragons still around, in that he killed them all and became the very thing he hated. Hell, his first appearance amounted to nothing more than blowing some stuff up and being the mechanism used to make the time skip happen.
Let's see if you can get past my Beelzemon. Mephiles, WARP SHINKA!
I guess he always had trappings of a GDV, and the author refused to really expand upon his personal character for some reason.
I'd argue that he still has potential, just nothing complex but simple & easy to get.
How he became the Dragon King would have been a fun backstory for example.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
That certainly would be true. It's funny how in contrast with how the final villain of the series is getting more flat, that Oda on the other hand is trying to add some depth to his villains. If you know what is happening in the Whole Cake Island arc right now, then it would be a surprise how much depth he recently gave to someone like Big Mom.
Zeref pretty much said what Mashimas bad writing skills told us and that he literally has no idea what's going on in Acno heads besides that he'll likely torture immortals for fun.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.
Cue banging our heads against the wall.
Acno was never going to live up to the unstoppable badass he was presented as.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.
He could have been if he had a better writer.
Actaully no
Acno could if he was taking the Madara route
He is just so immensely shallow and self centered in his motivation you can't but be entertained by him
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole!
I think many people thought Madara to be insufferable, and thought he was too Easily Forgiven by the narrative.
That's actually Obito.
No matter how bad Acny can get, he will never be as irritating as Obito.

Doflamingo is a classic villain, this guy isn't.
