Equally, I think that's jumping the gun a bit. Taking things too far.
I feel like cut content is something to keep in mind and think about, always.
Just not something to take as absolute.
Fighteer has already stated he HATES people making stories into rape allegories. We have had this discussion before. Between that and the dummied out nature of the content, don't expect any wiggle from him on the matter.
I was unaware that the company actually rethought that material, though. I figured they just didn't put it in because of Simmons's stance on it, but kept it as canon.
ETA: However, while it's played for laughs, G La DOS being turned into a potato isn't far off from that allegory. It was just given a lighter tone to get crap past the radar.

I respectfully disagree. I feel rape is something in our culture that it's better for us to talk about than to ignore.
And allegory is a perfectly fine way for us to work out cultural issues.
...I don't actually know whether the developers rethought anything. I haven't heard anything either way.
All we can say is that they were going to handle it a certain way, and that content isn't in the end result. It's up to us to figure out what to make of that.
I was referring to the post on the last page that said Valve didn't feel the dummied out lines matched the tone of the game. Which was a dark comedy. There's nothing comedic in that set of lines. Turning G La DOS into a potato would be a much more comedic way of inserting rape into the story. It's binding someone (something you would have to do in some way to pull off rape in the first place) and inserting them into something else (Sure, this is inside out, but close enough for the matter). It still works as a rape allegory without breaking the mood of the game as much as a set of acted lines that sounds directly like rape.
I don't think Potat OS is an allegory for rape. Its not played in such a way and doesn't really... discuss the issue if it is. Assuming it is, it doesn't follow through on the allegory/metaphor/etc.
And, jesus, wow. How dare I insult the 'most perfect pairing'. Jeeze. Get over yourself. I have my reasons for not liking that pairing. Yes, the content was cut but the rest of the relationship was built with that scene in mind. And there's nothing to say that didn't happen because we know Cave ordered Caroline to be put into the OS and we know she didn't want that which still presents issues.
Until there's something that outright puts those scenes and lines into non-canon terretory and makes it clear that those could have in no way happened or overwrites them, then I'll keep those in mind. Because, a lot of times, I see cut content giving further insight into details rather than detracting from the story.
But that's just my stance on the issue.
Okay, I give up. Haters gonna hate, shippers gonna ship . There are loads of fandoms with way more fucked up pairings for you to yell at.
The scene is still strongly implied by "she'll argue, she'll try to resist, but you make her. Hell, put her in my computer."
Fresh-eyed movie blogThat is an awful excuse. Just because there are more screwed up pairings doesn't make this one any less so.
Let us never speak of this Flame War again.
Let's not let shipping get between us. Portal fans are only a tiny corner of the internet. We've got to stick together. *group hug*
If that was a Flame War then I'm scared of the rest of the internet.
I honestly thought you were joking when you defended it so strongly, sheesh. Head Canon isn't anything to fight over. It's your own fantasy, nothing anyone else can ever say will take it away from you unless you let them. Not that I'm any better. I fought over the rape subtext a long time ago and Fighteer attacked me over it. We were never friends, but I let it poison me into honestly hating the man and the fact that he's a mod.
I sort of had the thought process "He can't possibly be trolling, so he must be serious! If he's serious, I have to change his mind!" and then went into full rage mode. What can i say? I'm a 12 year old girl about my ships.
Okay. This is a double-post bump, but I have to post this link. I don't want to rekindle that argument though. The link. It's from one of my fave tumblr blogs, the Queen of Caveline, Fuchsiamae. In that post she basically says that yes, she acknowledges that Caveline is problematic but no, she isn't going to stop shipping it. I couldn't say it any better. click the link
Wow. Over the top much? You wanted the argument to end and then bumped it again to have the final word? Wonderful.
Fine, ship what you want, but shipping problematic things means that you probably should be open to criticism of those ships and willing to take that criticism. If someone were to ship a 12 year old with a 21 year old, they really can't get upset when that squicks people out... a lot.
I GIVE UP let's just STOP and talk about something else. like ummmmm... how the "testgasms" got past the radar. Yeah. That can't possibly go wrong.
I didn't see much of an issue with that. It got past the radar, but I wouldn't have understood when I was younger beyond what they meant to the plot. And it made sense too because there needed to be some reason that G La DOS would be obsessed with testing since, well, there's an established disconnect between the emotionless 100% Computer G La DOS and the 'has human emotions' Caroline.
Sounds more like a metaphor for drugs to me. Especially as the French version directly translated the "The Itch" chapter as "Addiction"...
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Excuse my twelvery. I prefer my headcanon, because Wheatley is hot LISTEN to those sound files. LISTEN TO THEM.
...my fangirl side just took over.

I finally have to doff my cap to someone worse than I am about shipping and headcanon and all that. I'm not too happy about that fact. Stop while you're NOT digging your own grave here.
I like to imagine that Wheatley and the Space Core are making hot, oily, two hundred thousand mile high love until their power supplies run out and they become orbital debris. Is there such a thing as gay robot sex?
By the way, I'm kidding.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Can you not? Dismissing what other people say because it doesn't match your headcanon on a discussion you yourself started isn't exactly, well, its kind of freaking rude. And the hell does 'excuse my twelvery' mean??? That's not a word...

i give up i give up i give up can someone choose a topic that won't start an argument
What's the craziest map everyone's downloaded? I haven't downloaded any myself but I wanna hear about the insanity out there.
There was one that has you as P-Body going on an adventure with Wheatley, named something like "Mrs. Wheatley", that ends in a raging techno dance party.
Fresh-eyed movie blog"Ms. Wheatley". I watched a Youtube video of that map, and iirc they imported audio from one of Stephen Merchant's movies for Wheatley monologue. [awkwardness intensifies]

Something that was cut is not in the finished product and shouldn't be counted as part of the product's continuity. That's got to be a consistent rule. Caroline being "raped" into GLaDOS is non-canon.
