Besides it's Guard and Counter-Attack that was vital to me. Some bosses just become pathetic if you can block their biggest attacks (Hello Reverse Armor)

I think it's keeping the shield and ditching the sword that gets it to you first? Pretty sure that's what I did on my first playthrough, and I got it hella early.

Court Dragon
If nothing else, Sword in Final Mix gets you Counterattack and Guard earlier than any other choice (24 instead of 45 or 57), in addition to the Leaf Bracer/Second Chance/MP Rage combo mentioned above.
Now I want to replay Final Mix with Sword.
