If you add Na, you'll Kill It with Water and Fire.

How — and when — do you tell a philosophy it's adopted? What do you do when it wants to meet its birth adherents?

Can anybody put a save file on a public hoster, like rapidshare or megaupload. I would like to see the actual fortress.

Dewarn's Journal: Summer, Autumn, and Winter'

  • 2nd Hematite, 204:

I order the metalsmith to turn out some more copper picks so I can throw some of these slackers onto mining duty. It's high time we did some exploratory mining around here. It has been decided that the downward staircases should rest at the far end of the main dormitory halls - it is from there that we'll begin our first, all-pervasive ventures into the rock. Strike the earth!

  • 3rd Hematite, 204:

As usual, we need copper bars to forge picks. But to get copper, we need to mine, and to mine, we need picks.

I order a small antechamber to be hollowed out on the level beneath the living quarters. Everything else will branch from here.

  • 9th Hematite, 204:

So far we're striking alunite. Not much else interesting.

  • 10th Hematite, 204:

I get reports that there's a whole bunch of copper ore lying down in the incomplete moat. This might explain why it's taking so long to smelt the bloody stuff.

Time to dig out a stockpile branching off of our smithing rooms. This is unacceptable, in my view.

  • 11th Hematite, 204:

The humans have arrived to trade with us. Lovely. Time to go tell Stuckupson to stop his beloved engraving for five minutes so he can tell these human chaps what's what.

  • 12th Hematite, 204:

Yay, we struck tetrahedrite.

  • 13th Hematite, 204:

It's been two days since I talked to our dear mayor, and he's still smoothing out floors. The humans have gotten here. Finally, in my capacity as ruler of the fortress, I tell him to knock off the stone detailing until he trades with them. He pouts at me, but at least he's doing what I say this time.

On an entirely unrelated note, we have tons upon tons of alunite craftsmanship. Let's trade some of it.

Oh, excellent! They have more wood. What do you know, we can use wood. We give them a few of our idols, which they like very much.

I also secure a couple of picks for future use, and some wild strawberry seeds. Why? Why not.

With that, I think the trading is done with. I tell Stuckupson to go back to his carving, but the human representative accosts him first.

They ask what sort of requests we've got. I ask for wood and leave it at that.

  • 23rd Hematite, 204:

Exploratory mining continues.

In an effort to train some of the new engravers I've appointed, I've mandated that all the domiciles be smoothed. Maybe they'll be slightly more tolerable that way.

Unlike Stuckupson, I do NOT order the construction of a big, ego-boosting office.

  • 25th Hematite, 204:

The war dogs have been trained. All four or so. I have them divvied up among the Guard, since they need them the most.

  • 27th Hematite, 204:

I order the first ballista to be built. The copper stockpile off the smithy has been designated. Idlers at a low as they scramble to it.

  • 5th Malachite, 204:

We're informed that we attracted no new migrants this season. Good. I've got enough trouble with this many dwarves as it is.

We've discovered an underground pool! Aha. Tower-caps ahoy!

  • 17th Malachite, 204:

I'm pleased to note that smoothing the walls of one's quarters renders them suitably modest. I think we'll have happier dwarves from now on.

  • 18th Malachite, 204:

I decide to place the first ballista in the hallway, second floor down. Basically, if anyone comes through, they've got the ballista pointing right in their faces. I don't know how effective this is, but hell if it doesn't amuse me.

  • 19th Malachite, 204:

We've struck native aluminum. Our metalsmith'll like that.

  • 8th Galena, 204:

We've struck precious fire opals. Praise be to the miners!

  • 11th Galena, 204:

Stuckupson is finally done meeting with the humans. I tune him out as he describes the economic situation in painstaking detail - whatever, whatever. Just have the craftsdwarves churn out more amulets, and I'm happy. He bugs me about the textile industry, but 'm tuning that out too.

I check over our stores. We have a lot of prepared meals (470), some beer (10 dwarven, 131 longland), some rum (25), and vast quantities of dwarven wine (608). Something tells me our food stockpiles are in very good shape.

  • 16th Galena, 204:

Momuz Kuletudist has given birth to a girl.

  • 20th Galena, 204:

Good news - we've found the underground pool.

Bad news - I just flooded all the exploratory tunnels.

Crap.

  • 21th Galena, 204:

I've cancelled the digging and ordered them to set some doors, and fast.

  • 25th Galena, 204:

I've put the doors in place - luckily, the flooding is relatively localized, and we've only lost a small percentage of the tunnels - there's nothing valuable in there that we need to get ahold of, either, so all things considered I think we made out pretty well. Official order: Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are these doors to be opened, EVER, unless we want to lose the exploratory mines and all the levels underneath. To anyone who may read this, there's two of them, one close to the antechamber - just follow the flooded area until you find the next one. Know where they are, know what they're there for.

  • 26th Galena, 204:

Olon, our beloved leader of muscleheads, became a legendary champion this day.

Woo.

  • 1st Limestone, 204:

Autumn has come. I've decided to wall up the flooded tunnels, just to make sure. I don't want one kobold thief to ruin months of hard work.

Dewarn's Journal

  • 5th Limestone, 204:

Thikut seems to be in on the growing "party" movement. I'll be honest, I don't have any friends, but it seems to me there's a bit of discontent concerning Stuckupson. Maybe I can use this to my advantage.

  • 10th Limestone, 204:

Now a dwarf named Cog is organizing a party, as well. I need to channel this energy to more useful ends... like evicting Stuckupson from his office.

  • 13th Limestone, 204:

Stuckupson ended the ridiculous trifle pewter mandate. Why, you ask? Because we had no tin? Because importing it would take too long? Because we're taking him less and less seriously with each day?

Nooooo.

Because he spotted a tiny imperfection in the wall of the metalsmiths' workshops. He wants it to be corrected before anything he wants made is made there.

Don't ask me to follow his line of thinking.

  • 15th Limestone, 204:

Nomal Tithlethingiz, our armor, was found dead outside today. The cause of death is unknown, but she had bled and vomited profusely. We suspect an attack by a wild animal.

  • 16th Limestone, 204:

Stuckupson brings me into his office to tell me about his new export bans. I didn't even pay attention - let him feel important. But then I noticed a memo on his desk. The same piece of paper, used thrice. The first order was from our dear mayor himself, to Olon - Nomal had apparently violated a production order from Stuckupson.

So Olon, by all accounts, beat her to death.

I saw her at one of Tom's parties recently. This paints a disturbing picture.

  • 16th Limestone, 204:

Sibrek, one of our woodcrafters, just got taken by a fey mood.

  • 17th Limestone, 204:

Goblins ambush incoming dwarf merchants. But our folk do all right for themselves.

  • 19th Limestone, 204:

I tell Stuckupson to go talk to the merchants. Sibrek claims a shop, much to the chagrin of the other carpenters. Let's see what he's going to turn out.

In the meantime, though, I go grab Tom. Five minutes later, he's admiring his new office with every sign of satisfaction.

I can't wait to see what Stuckupson has to say about this.

  • 21st Limestone, 204:

We trade our craftsmanship for some tower cap logs and picks.

  • 22nd Limestone, 204:

Sibrek's begun the construction. Whatever it is. Also, there's some goblin raiders outside - our hunters ran into them, but if they come anywhere nearby our muscleheads can deal with them. It's no biggie.

  • 24th Limestone, 204:

Stuckupson talks to the dwarf diplomats. We ask politely for wood and barrels.

  • 26th Limestone, 204:

The goblins have finally come. Olon tells them to talk to the fist. Hilarity ensues.

  • 27th Limestone, 204

Sibrek's finally done. He's created Ishlum Berim, a Mahogany Trumpet! How... odd.

Stuckupson finally notices. Worth it!

  • 15th Sandstone, 204:

Isn't there anything to butcher in this whole damn place? Oh, the merchants are leaving.

  • 9th Timber, 204:

More migrants. I still haven't figured out what to do with the last batch.

  • 1st Moonstone, 204:

Winter's hit.

  • 11th Moonstone, 204:

We have forty idlers. FORTY IDLERS. And that's terrible.

I get some new mining underway.

  • 14th Moonstone, 204:

We've struck shell opal. Wonderful!

  • 16th Moonstone, 204:

Goblins ambushed one of our wrestlers, Adil, today, and struck him down. Curse the benighted bastards. They're coming for us, now, a good number of time - it's time to see if the muscleheads are ready. Strike goblin skull, blood miners!

  • 19th Moonstone, 204:

Some of our dwarves were caught outside, doing their best to gather equipment - hastily as I can, I order everyone in.

  • 20th Moonstone, 204:

Sigun, the fisherdwarf has been struck down.

  • 23rd Moonstone, 204:

I have the military dwarves move out and engage the enemy.

Those poor, poor goblins. After about half of them get obliterated, off they go.

Unfortunately, Stuckupson survived the whole debacle. Lost some of his dogs, though.

I announce that everyone can go back outdoors.

A lot of puppies died. We need to watch out for that.

  • 8th Opal, 204:

Stuckupson ends his crystal mandate. Sure thing, 'boss'. Wish you'd died in the raid.

  • 13th Opal, 204:

Stuckupson now wants more trifle pewter items. Time to see if we can MANAGE it this time.

  • 21st Opal, 204:

Kivish has given birth to a boy.

  • 4th Obsidian, 204:

We've struck gold! Praise be to the miners!

  • 11th Obsidian, 204:

Ast the farmer has been possessed! Damn it all, I liked him.

He claims a Craftsdwarf's workshop.

  • 17th Obsidian, 204:

He's begun work on whatever it is.

  • 21st Obsidian, 204:

It's a bracelet. Andesite. It's named Nobangsterus.

  • 25th Obsidian, 204:

We've started naming all the Batmen that hang around our fortress. It's funny, in a depressingly boring sort of way. Stuckupson is surprisingly good at them. Damn his gift for poetry.

  • 1st Granite, 205:

It's spring. Time to find some other poor sod to slap the crown onto.

I received an interesting missive, about a a Village known as Mirrorpasses. It seems they are in serious need of a larger population and they desire me to go there and see what I can do to encourage people to move to this backwater. I should be arriving tomorrow, so tonight, I review all the information I can find out about this place.

1) It has a current population of 67. 2) A labor report sent to me revials that nearly all the dwarves are doing their own thing, and not recieving any proper instructions. Such as nearly every adult dwarf has been tasked to hall wood in addition to their what ever chores they need to do. Such a waste of time. This will be one of the first things that I fix. 3) I see that the person in charge of this place prior to me tapped into a water supply, and seems to have some sort of plan for it, so I'll have to look through his notes and see if he left any tips about what he was intending to do with it all. 4) I seem to recall reading that this region was suppose to have lava some where about, but I'm not seeing any proof of such being anywhere near by. The maps that I have show what might have once been a volcano that has long sense gone dormant, and a number of excavations sent out, but not a single glob of magma has been yet to be found. Interesting. 5) It's cold. Need I say more?

Also I notice something else that seems rather foolish. The only one that seems to have an office and what not is some dwarf going by the name Tom. Even the Mayor doesn't have an office yet. No wonder he keeps making rather foolish mandates for the previous rulers to follow. Also the housing in this place is rather sub par. Each dwarf lives in a small room with nothing but a bed. Some dwarfs have even taken to throwing clothes down on the floor between the bed and the door.

I think what I'll focus on this year is building a bit better housing for the dwarfs. I'm not talking anything extravagant but cloths just thrown about will not work. Once the new housing is up, this old housing can be converted to something else. Perhaps temp housing for new guests.

I briefly consider kicking Tom out of his room so the Mayor can have that place, but I decide to instead make a mirror reflection of his suite for the Mayor.
