I almost forgot about it until I encountered it after running from the ghost.
That was a rather brutal move on the random level generator's part.

Gave them our reactions, our explosions, all that was ours For graphs of passion and charts of stars...Ugh, I keep getting killed fighting Olmec. That last run was the worst, I was one stomp away from victory and then I died. I had the caps, spike shoes, pitcher's mitt and the compass but I died anyways.
I noticed that the pitcher's mitt seems to make that fight MUCH easier provided you have something to throw (and if you have ropes you can just grab chests from up top).
It's a shame that they nerfed the scepter so much. It used to be the easy mode for beating him but now it's just suicide since nothing in that fight leaves a corpse and it'll just rebound on you. (As opposed to during the temple itself where it's just really dangerous).
The scepter is even more useless in this version of the game.
Gave them our reactions, our explosions, all that was ours For graphs of passion and charts of stars...Yes it was like that daily a few days ago that had a boomerang caveman a few blockns and on the same level to one entrance in the jungle and you had two seconds at most to react before getting a boomerang to the face.
Bombs can help greatly and there is a trick that putting a bomb in the middle of two block to make a 4 block lenght tunnel, it is usefull to quickly make a hole for Olmec to fall and when minning yama's throne.
I tried using bombs a little bit but I don't think I did it right (I only had about half a dozen AFTER looting the upper area, for some reason I'd gotten a lot more ropes). Would you suggest using the bombs at the start or the end of the fight? When I tried using them at the end I ended up with a single unexploded tile stopping him from falling in the lava, with a drop into lava on either side, and I got killed trying to make some more room around it.
Almost every time I've gotten to the Olmec Head in original Spelunky, I just let the whole sequence play out, lasting like half an hour, letting it just crush the entire place (or most of it) so I could get all the treasure (or most of it).
Well, I am pretty sure that with 10 bombs is posible to kill Olmec, if you have less you can make him crush some blocks before bombing.
I think that in the remake if Olmec crushes a block with a gem, the gem is also destroyed.

what
no seriously, what
okay, chalk up one more reason not to play the remake
Seriously, I actually liked how you could choose to take the safe route and save your bombs to deal with Olmec and get its treasure safely afterwards, or you could choose the risky (and more time-consuming) route and lure the Olmec head to do the crunchwork for you, so that you can spend almost all your bombs on the City of Gold in the previous level.
How do you crush a block? I know you can blow them up, or dig them with mattock.
Olmec head comes crashing down a la Bowser from Super Mario Bros. 3, and destroys a row of four or five blocks directly beneath it.
Also the Boulder crushes everything in it path while it is rolling.
That's just how crushing works in this version of the game. It's still superior to the classic one, anyway.
Gave them our reactions, our explosions, all that was ours For graphs of passion and charts of stars...How is it superior? In the old version, crushed blocks release their gems/gold, which gives a reward to incredibly dangerous (or otherwise costly) feats of dealing with the Olmec Head or the boulder a reward.
The physics are improved, the game is more balanced, there are new levels to explore and new strategies to use, as well as some pretty dang fun new items. It's hard playing classic Spelunky because the movement feels so... loose, glidey.
Also, the damsel can be a pug

Gave them our reactions, our explosions, all that was ours For graphs of passion and charts of stars...I've heard a lot about the new features, though I just don't think I can properly appreciate it as an improvement to the original Spelunky because a number of things have changed. I guess I can think of it as a spinoff or something.
I specifically avoid the spring shoes in the original because they fuck up what I feel are the otherwise tight and responsive yet also very quick and exciting physics of the original. (Maybe with a little exception for when you start moving; you take a moment to accelerate.)
That said, damsel being a pug is definitely something I will have to think about.

If you ask me, not being able to farm Olmec for his stage loot is a good thing because farming is boring and goes against the game's design philosophy (as clearly evidenced by there being a time limit everywhere except the final boss). I'll make an exception for ghost-diamond-running just because of how absurdly dangerous it is for a finite benefit. I do miss the boulder leaving behind loot though.
The time limit is lifted after you get the hedjet anyway.
Not anymore.
Gave them our reactions, our explosions, all that was ours For graphs of passion and charts of stars...Damsel doggy? I gotta set that in the options.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Oh yeah, I forgot. Although it's pretty easy to die from it, it's pretty useful. Though, it's bad if it destroys Kali's altar.
In the new version is it still barely possible to jump over the boulder?
I don't think so. Not unless there's an item that improves jumping or something.
It's pretty easy to avoid anyways though.
I completly forgot about it after murdering the shopkeepers with the dead are restless shotgun, the worst part was that I wasted all my bombs trying to kill Old Bitey to get the journal entry. It was yet another stupid death so I don't have the right to complain.
