Sharia Law is already not recognized in the American court system, it never has been, so why do we need a law for any reason other than to snub Muslims and prevent people from using it as a defense to a jury?

Of course there are idiot jurors out there who would say "Well, he was acting under the rules of his religion, so we can't punish him too harshly for killing his daughter." Or something to the fashion of that.

I'd rather we had a Supreme Court Statement that religious laws and rules have no bearing on the law of the land. Government Law > Religious Law, so long as you live here.

[up][up]A judge could just state that religious laws can have no bearing on sentences and that the jury should completely ignore it. God told me to is not an effective defense.

^^ A number of states have laws permitting the jury in a trial by jury to determine the punishments carried out by a conviction by jury. Vermont is one such place.

I dislike jury trials in the first place but anyway, for the topic at hand, i don't think the law is necessary. Unless you feel like banning jewish, catholic and the myriad number of different protestant systems, it doesn't really make sense to specifically ban Sharia law.

Oh, but it makes perfect sense in a nation where people are pissing their pants over the fear that the secretmuslim president is going to force an extremist version of sharia law onto us all!

I guess what I'm trying to say, without being overly harsh and sarcastic, is that people are fucking paranoid.
