There are reports that some former Aya Hirano fans are planning to assassinate her for revealing she had a boyfriend once.

Now, I think this revelation was Aya's undoing, but the Fan Dumb...including someone who wanted to kill her for being a "sellout" to their cause...it disturbs me.

Based on what I've seen in articles on sankaku, some of these Lifeless Beings aren't happy she's got a boyfriend.

You know, this is exactly like how the rabid fangirls wanted to kill Mamoru Miyano's pregnant fiancée. And I'm equally as pissed at the Fan Dumb now as I was then. My god, Its things like this that make me ashamed to be an anime fan sometimes. sad

Just like the Fan Dumb who instigated a Yoko Oh No incident when Tetsuya Kakihara courted Mamiko Noto... or the fangirls exploding when they learned about Mamoru Miyano getting married.

These fucking otaku are what's giving sane fans like us a bad rep.

^ NINJA'D BY THE EXACT SAME CONCEPT.

I don't get it. Is her career actually in jeopardy?

... I don't see why Hirano having a boyfriend is a cause of concern. Is she supposed to be single or something?

Roxas: That's because you have no idea how nuts otaku can get over things like this.

For example, the main character of Kannagi was revealed by the mangaka to have had a boyfriend at some time in the past. Said mangaka received death threats.

Additionally, the manga has been on indefinite hiatus since 2008.

I know anime fans have a reputation for being crazier than the general population, but doesn't this sort of thing happen to mainstream celebrities as well? Obsession, and stalking, and people flipping out when their imagined waifus turn out to have boyfriends?

I'm just not sure it's fair to say "God this makes me ashamed to be an anime fan" any more than someone cyber-stalking Scarlet Johansson should make you ashamed to be a movie fan.

Because movies are more mainstream than anime. It's a fact, and you know how humans are; if it's foreign, it's strange. The Fan Dumb is just making the already perceived image by outsiders even worse.

Because anime fans are looked down on by Hollywood celebrity fans.

Nerd hierarchy, man.

Why would they kill Aya Hirano? If you kill her, then she can't make any more Haruhi things!

I can't believe that sounds incredibly naive and yet is quite rational.

Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.

That's kind of sad to be honest. I mean, why do they care?

Didn't even know the name but this is just.. sad. Then again, as someone already pointed out, examples like these are unfortunately common.

^^^ Well, she's certainly a lot more polite about it than I ever would have been. Granted, this is probably because my response would be along the lines of, "Fuck you, you sexually maladjusted mouth-breathers!"
