Of course, if not because of a very narrow set of not-guaranteed circumstances that happened to happen, that 'learn it by yourself, Negi' manipulation game from the adults would most likely have resulted in Negi's (and probably others') death.

Yeah, withholding information has always been a big issue for Akamatsu's narrative, it seems. I don't know why he does it in the first place since there are better ways to introduce mysteries to the plot than showing a bunch of people who know the answers but just don't want to say anything AND the way it backfired big time in Negima and probably will do the same for UQ.

I stopped giving a shit about UQ long ago, but I came up with a theory about Yukihime. Negi was possessed by the Lifemaker and Yukihime then used her powers to seal him away (which is why she supposedly lost part of her powers and Fate says she betrayed Negi). Brainless Special Snowflake was created to release Negi which Yukihime doesn't want so she raised him to make sure he would be the idiot who doesn't care about anything that we know and make sure he would see her as a mother figure he would blindly love and trust no matter what. I don't trust that woman, but well, I don't really care about how the issue turns out anymore, if that thing someday goes anywhere.

Well, the problem with that theory is it doesn't really mesh with Yukihime's inner monologue in chapter one, which says she only wanted her place with the uber duber immortal cool elite who is like her, after outliving and forgetting those lame mortals. Never mind she then goes and spends most of her time away from those beloved immortal comrades, and treats as many of them she can as all but slaves, but eh.

Well, according to Amazon, 'Negima'' 38 does exist. Hoping the stars align or a sack of money plummets from the heavens so I can finish this series off before it goes out of print. Really don't want my collection to be 32 volumes and two (one?) omnibus.

Part of why I stopped collecting the Evangelion manga, I have the old-school large-edition, left-to-right volumes and they changed the format when manga standardized.

[up][up]I don't really see the problem. Since the whole point would still be that Brainless Special Snowflake doesn't go out to save Negi and I'm not saying that Snowflake's coolness got Yukihime to really care about him. Besides, by this point, who gives a damn about consistency in the plot of UQ?[up]

I'm not sure I'd say Yukihime isn't like Evangeline. Evangeline was perfectly capable of being mature and serious. Trouble is, Yukihime has done so little that I don't remember her actually displaying much personality at all apart from a few gags like teasing Touta while looking like a little girl. Has she done anything since chapter 50 or so? I've been sort of reading the UQ Holder thread but I haven't seen her name come up.

No, Evangeline has been absent from the current mission.

There, that's the ultimate proof that they're the same character. World scale disaster on the loose and the person who could easily clean it up is off not giving a shit somewhere by herself.

Why do you think she avoided going to the UQ Holder base for so long? No privacy.

I think that the conclusion we can give to all this is that Yukihime does have traits of Eva and we probably wouldn't have trouble seeing them as the same person if she was given proper focus. The main problem is that Yukihime lacks nearly all the traits that made Eva amusing (her tsundere-ness, her Large Ham tendencies and her Buttmonkey-ish moments) and she isn't even a really effective mentor figure anymore.

Hey guys, I came because I was wondering something about Evangeline. If Eva is supposed to be an infamous evil mage with a high bounty and who is feared across the magic community, how come Negi didn't recognize her name from the class roster right away? I saw one of the OVAs and his friend Anya was terrified when she heard the great villain Evangeline was training them...

Negi, especially early manga Negi, is extremely naive. The idea that one of his students could be an evil mage isn't something he can consider without it being made a lot more obvious. It's implied somewhere that Negi hadn't really accepted that evil mages where really "a thing" at the time.

That and he has Ping-Pong intelligence.

He supposedly a genius mage with a higher IQ than most adults, yet can't tell that the blond woman wearing the exact same clothes and hairstyle is Evangeline. Even when he's seen the transformation beforehand.

Sure I get he's naive, but that really isn't a mistake you can make from naivete.

All those books he stole to study were about mechanics and nothing about Mage pop culture or things like that. He knows nothing about mages themselves really.

It wasn't common knowledge that Evangeline was actually a little girl, and really why would he think that an infamous evil wizard is attending a middle school?

Which is weird because he could have looked about stuff about his dad and Ala Rubra. He seemd to know surprisingly little about him.

[up]It's more the faculty's fault for thinking that putting them together like that was a good idea and not even warning him.

For that matter, Misora, who is also in the magic community and knew about the story of Evangeline, had no idea she was studying with the infamous mage either. I assume maybe the anti-magic realization field the school had might have have something to do with it.

Then is that why Negi never asked about his mom?

You'd expect an elite magic graduate to ever have heard about the most infamous mage of the recent history. That's like graduating with top honors on History of the XX Century and never hearing about Stalin.

Yeah, that he showed no awareness of who she was until Chamo? explained it to him bugged me for that very reason.
