I think the thing that annoys me most about this is that it implies that they're planning to have romantic tension between Watson and Holmes.
It's not just that American viewers can't handle homoerotic tension; apparently they can't handle asexuality.

I'm not a huge fan of the constant "Holmes and Watson are totally gay for each other" mindset on the Internet, but I did find their interactions in this show absolutely fun and at times very awkwardly endearing. I think this show struck a good balance, and I like the depiction of Holmes as asexual since that's how he tends to come across in the books.
So making Watson a woman is...uh...not the best idea I've ever heard. It seems like it's just an excuse for MOAR SEXUAL TENSION WOOO.

^^Holmes could be asexual but not aromantic? The term "homoerotic" doesn't really fit in this case, but there's not really a better word.
@Medicus: One person's strong, platonic male friendship is another's homoeroticism. I vastly prefer Holmes to be asexual, but I can see how others could come to the conclusion that he's gay (or Watsonsexual).
