Oh but I will say. I'm okay with Fail Polish. But I also think Sequel Beautification Syndrome is a good alternative.

I'm fine with Fail Polish, but if we decide to rename, please don't go with "Progressively Pretty." No offense to the troper offering it, but, well....

[up][up] I like the sound of Sequel Beautification Syndrome, but I think that it leaves out the potential for this to happen within one instalment of the work.

I also don't like Fail Polish. I'd expect it to be either A: The stereotype of Polish people being stupid (Fail Polish would be a fantastic name for that, I think) or B: An unattractive character trying to make themselves look prettier, and failing.

Prettied Up? Art Style Makeover? I don't really have any ideas for a rename.

[up]Sounds a bit too much like Art Evolution to me.

We're getting some good ideas, Do you think we need a crowner?

Camacan,

With respect to expecting a title to tell you what the trope is without reading the article... One thing I've learned from reviewing hundreds of wicks is that a trope's title does 95+% of its work in its wicks. Those wicks have a life of their own: they convey meaning by being cited as an example and in sentences, particularly when they aren't potholed but used as an integral part of a sentence. When a title doesn't mean what the trope means, a signifcant number of sentences elsewhere in the wiki communicate much less than they could.
I definitely agree with this. I think that many times (unfortunately) just the trope name is invoked in an example, especially on character pages, and when trope names are non-indicative, I think that makes trying to understand what they mean much more difficult than it needs to be.

I made a single proposition rename crowner here. Personally, I think that Fail Polish probably should be renamed. I think the name makes it sound like something is becoming more "fail" so-to-speak rather than less. Also, I do not tend to associate the word "fail" with physical appearances, but that might just be me.

Yeah Fail Polish sounds like Gameplay that's been refined in a sequel but lost options and abilities.

I personally think the name is almost all-right, and that the first lines of the description complete the missing part of the all-right. For what is work, I never count "Guess That Trope" as a valid evidence or suggestion that a rename is needed — that same argument could be used to say that we need to rename bananas. What I agree with is that the name suggests something in a completely different direction than expected (ie.: a Epic Fail trope), but the very first lines of the description fix it. Nothing that a good Laconic can't helo solve, either.

I'm neutral-tending-to-preserve on renaming this one.

You believe that people read laconics or trope descriptions before using a trope?

I've said it before about others, but I'll say it again: your naivete is charming. :D

They should, if they don't there's a problem far deeper and worse than what we can identify or solve. Isn't the same expected and common sense with, say, words in a dictionary or instructions in a recipe? If those people fail here, they most likely fail there too.

For my naivete, yours is charming.

Last time I checked, TV Tropes is descriptive, not proscriptive. What people should do is far less important than what they actually do.

  • sigh* Well, it looks like we're tending towards rename.

How about "Garnish/Glamorize the Gonk"?

"Glamorize The Gonk is another awkward attempt at alliterative appeal - snowcloning an imperfect trope name is rarely a good idea, and the only thing Gonk has ever meant to me is those box-shaped droids in Star Wars. Plus it's more specific then this trope is.

Better Looking In The Sequel? Probably not the best option.

Given that the single proposition crowner showed around 76% support for a rename and seems to have stabilized, I made an alternative titles crowner here. Feel free to add names as you wish.

I removed the rename crowner, and linked up the alternate name crowner.

The description for Fail Polish has been moved to the Progressively Prettier page, the wicks were fixed, new subpages were made while the old ones were cut, Fail Polish has been made a redirect, and there is now a note about the change on the Renamed Tropes page.

I think the only thing left is for a moderator to move the discussion page on Fail Polish to Progressively Prettier before the rename can be finalized.
