There's one co-op wad I really like just because of how fucking ridiculous it is. Deaths are to be expected, in vast quantities. I wish I remembered the name.

I love all the station defense mods. Its great fun to be swarmed by waves of enemies, Either solo or in groups.

To this day I still have no idea how to even go online in Doom. But I don't really care to do so.

Did anyone read that article on last page?

Because nobody commented on that id wanted Doom 4 to be as big as Skyrim.

Which sounds rather terrible since they are different types of game tongue

As long as there's no cover system or Regenerating Health.

[up] The article said, originally, it was based on Call Of Duty so those would have been a given. Along with the "Obligatory vehicle sequence" where you use a turret. Their words, not mine.

Oh. Well that's effing shite.

If I want Call of Duty I'll play Call of fucking Duty.

There's a reason they ditched the game in progress. I can only hope that was it.

[up][up] But at least 007 L Egends actually lets you CHOOSE if you want health regen or health pickups.

But having thee choice between the two is good.

I honestly think that getting shot to shit and then getting all your health back by sitting behind a rock for a second is stupid and encourages playing like a tosser.

Yeah, I don't think giving the choice automatically is a better idea. It brings up all sort of wonky balance issues. I haven't actually played Legends though so I'll just assume they did it right.

You know I just remembered another game.

You know The Getaway and Getaway Black Monday on PS 2? Those had regenerating health but you couldn't outright rely on it or take it for granted. You had to be near a wall so your character could lean on it to heal, you could only heal to a point and if you got shot up way too much it wouldn't work so well an could only regenerate a little bit. That was done fairly decently. It could help but it punished the player for being overtly reliant on it.

Just use Regenerating Shields, Static Health if you need to. I don't think it belongs in Doom at all but it's a nice counterbalance between giving players mercy and punishing them for screwing up.

Bioshock Infinite did it well since the shield bar is a lot smaller than your health bar.

I just found an interesting mod called "Return of the Triad". As the name implies, it's a Rise of the Triad TC. It's quite impressive how closely it replicates ROTT gameplay. Arguably, maybe a bit too close. It has walls that aren't perfectly rectangular, different height levels (it still uses the platform thingies, whose name I forgot, though) and you can carry more than one rocket launcher weapon, but other than that, it's exactly like ROTT. It's fun to play, but it's not exactly innovative.

If I had things my way, every shooter would let you move at at least half of Doom's running speed, you'd be able to pick up every weapon in the game at once, there'd be no regenerating anything, and there'd be at least 8 unique (non-palette swap) enemies, not including bosses.

But of course I'm just preaching to the choir now. Simple fact is, id software did the right thing cancelling their original Doom 4 version. Doom 4 better not become Call of Dooty because their fans do not want that, and I hope id knows that as well. Trust me, id - the good reputation from your old-school fans is worth way more than a few extra sales from Co D-heads. They'll probably drop the game after a month anyway.

I don't know. ID has always been on the PC trend bandwagon. Why else do you think the selling points of Rage where the shiny new graphics engines? Or the fact that they began it as a COD-ripoff in the first place?

I don't know anymore...

They probably know Doom still has a huge following and mmod community even now.

I began playing Psychophobia. I'm not so enthusiastic about it as other people, though, since my first impression is mixed.

I was really looking forward to it when I read that ZBloodpack is included with it. It's one of my favorite WADs and I craved a sequel for years. While I'm not sure whether if that's actually the case, the inclusion of it implied that Psychophobia is by the same creators and that it has the same "style".

Indeed, it reminds me a lot of ZBloodpack. However, it also reminds me of 90's shooters and their awful 3D. And that is exactly what I hate about this WAD: It's like the creators still live in a time when real 3D was new and exciting, that many overlooked that it looked awful, compared to 2D sprites. It's good that I don't have to include every 3D pk3, but it's bad that I have to include some at all.

Still, so far it really feels like ZBloodpack 2, so I will continue with it. But I will never like these awful 3D models.

I never bothered with the 3D models. I stuck with the 2D version.

How is that even possible? You have to include at least two 3D WADs or it won't work. Also, the main WAD also has some models in it (at least for weapons). You can't escape the horrible 3D. Worst of all, it's even in ZBloodpack (which ensure that I will keep my old WAD of it).

I dunno. I just got one version that didn't. Works fine. My character is still 3D, but it's impossible to notice outside of the occasional bathroom since it's a FPS. tongue

Did they seriously model all the different enemies in 3D? There's close to a hundred new ones.

So, hey, can we discuss weapon mods in here? I've got one I want to bring up.

First is Samsara. Simply put, it's basically a Massive Multiplayer Crossover for Doom. You just put it over a level WAD of your choice. It'll even work with Heretic, As long as it doesn't have a lot of extra weapons or scripting, it'll generally work. What it does is add seven other characters from various other FP Ses. You've got Duke Nukem, the guy from Quake, the guy from Heretic, even the guy from Wolfenstien 3D, if you're feeling retro. They've all had buffs, nerfs, and general changes to balance them all out, although each class has a speciality. Duke, for example, is all about crowd control.
