Yuanchosaan: Thanks. Some have said that I'm in a different league now.

Several w.i.p.s. The least done was a butterfly lady, so I posted the two that had some progress. I'll get back to the second dragon after some metal training.

The Princess and Knight. I still haven't settled for a good name for the Princess. So many good options. : / For the Knight, I was practicing how to make the polished metal look. Princess and Knight wip

The elite knight. "Protectors" of the kingdom. The Red Knight wip.

Ah - thank you, Yuan! *

...I wish I had more to say in this post. <_<

[up] In the princess-and-knight piece - the knight's sword looks like very well-polished metal, so I think you succeeded there. :) I'm not sure if that's armour he's supposed to be wearing, though - if it is, it doesn't really look it. Also I think his right arm is broken. 0_0

Couple of old things, couple of new things;

The new
A kind of empty drawing of a character who has a monsterish appearance. There are a lot of subtle shades that my scanner seems to be incapable of detecting, but overall it came out okay.

A quick sketch/doodle of a character with ridiculous facial hair, currently employed in the Shared-Story thread over in Writer's Block.

That's about it for new stuff. Slow goings, sadly; I neither have the rapid-fire inspiration and rather poor-but-quick artstyle of times long past, nor the excessive amounts of time to draw each and every day that I had last year in art class.

The Old

These are from a year ago.

This was me practicing dramatic poses with another somewhat monstrous-looking character.

This was me practicing excessive cosmetic design, with a character whose waist is unsettlingly thin. My irritation with my scanners ability to pick up shades applies here as well.

Butterfly lady side view, early try, didn't make the metal too good. Lady Butterfly.

The second try, which took 3-4 hours, was definately more of a success. Lady Butterfly with ear-rings.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, I spent more than 5 hours on this because I kept experimenting with various ways to manipulate the hues off of shades. The Princess and the Knight. Yeah, I went back to the drawing board with the names. Although, it will somehow be similar to the names of the characters their based off. smile

I am not posting anything for a long time... becuase I am too busy improving my skills. But I will comment your stuff.

I will EDIT this comment when finished :)

@Diurnal I have some words of advice but... first how old are you?(it matters for the kind of advice I want to give you). Anyways I recomend you to use GIMP instead of paint, trust me and it's free!.

You gave your heart into your heart and I admire that, it is cool just for that!. But you need to know something (don't worry they are good news).

@Fulgrate wow I really like her style. She looks very mysterious, exotic and I dare to speculate villain like. nice work, I like where this is going.

@Egroth seems interesting I like the "rusty" feel in you artwork. It feels old but I kinda like were you are going. What's your story about?

@Ryu. I will be honest with you I am not a big fan of that kind of style. BUT that's just personal preference... It is very very well done. You are very skilled and I wish I could do stuff as good as you are.

I really like that reptile man and the details on the clothes of your character is amazing. I would like more detail on their faces as well but (nevermind me is just my subjetive opinion).

You are very good, keep the great work.

@DIURNAL

Ok I think you have a BIG problem.

Your art isn't bad. I don't believe in bad art, my art isn't as good as I wanted and I in fact believe it is horrible (my art) and I am working to improve it. Therefore I am not in any position to criticize anyone.

But it does have a problem, and that is the fact that it isn't improving and it isn't improving because you aren't learning.

I think you have a lot of potential because you are passionate and sure of your own art. A lot of artist including me envy that. You aimed for cute and you achieved it.

But judging by your willingness to share tutorials. I think you are missing a lot.

It's not that you can't share with others. I like people that share knowledge for free with others. Thanks to them I didn't give up of being an artist (for that I am eternally grateful). But I think you aren't at that place yet, being a teacher (neither do I). I believe you are in a period (just like me) where you have A LOT to learn as a student (self taught or otherwise).

You are just at the starting line of the race that is art.

While I don't believe there is "bad art". I think there is such thing as better art. Because We can improve ourselves!

Just look at some of these:

Look how much she improved!

this one is good too!.

this one is great too!

[[this one wowed me http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&global=1&q=draw+this+again#/d4yx0y6]]

This one totally highlights my point very very well.

or all of these: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=draw+this+again+meme+

People like that are an inspiration to me.

You are missing a lot. I want to see you art in a few years and say to myself "wow Diurnal has improved a lot what an inspiration he is to me!". There are few things that give as much joy as inspiring others regarding art..

My advice is to work on your art and learn something new everyday. Not even you knows how far you can go if you work hard and practice, practice and practice!. I don't promise it will be easy but I can promise it will be worth it.

tl:dr My advice is to continue believing in yourself but also believe in how far you can go. You will be surprised on what you can achieve, if you follow my advice.

Aww man, I've been waiting to tell the short version of this story for a looong time...

Alright, so the story goes that there were two gods that made the world, Azralite, the god of Light and spirit, and Darkly, the god of Darkness and existence. They were both good allies, and made the universe for their entertainment. Once they created humans, however, the world was split in two. Those who worshiped Azralite, who valued sharp minds and spiritual power above all else, and those who worshiped Darkly, who cherished strength and skill. This was a fundamental conflict, that even after thousands of years, just couldn't be resolved. It just kept building up and up... until one day, the members of the Church of Azralite made a move. They began ruthlessly murdering thousands of Darkly's church, and this pissed him off to no end.

"Can't you stop them!?" Darkly would argue to Azralite, "They'll kill everyone who worshiped me if you don't!"

"No, my church isn't stupid." He would respond, "These are just a few bad apples, their day will come soon enough."

But that day never came. The Church's death sweeps were so thorough, that neighboring towns wouldn't even know what had happened before it was to late. The spree reached its peak the day the Church attacked the Dark City Shadopia, the Order of Darkly's capital. It was planned to be a perfect attack, the citizens of Shadopia wouldn't even know what had hit them until it was too late. Even still, the Church brought the entirety of it's army to the coast of Shadopia island, and staged an operation that would fall completely flat. Darkly had had enough of the Church slaughtering his people for no reason other than for them being different, so he intervened. For the first time in history one of the two great gods had entered the world... and it wasn't for happy reasons. The ensuing battle was an absolute bloodbath, resulting in the complete defeat of the Church. Darkly had a trick up his sleeve. As a God, he was already extremely powerful. As the God of Existance, however, he had the ability to make Crystals out of certain things. Those certain things, naturally, being the eight natural elements. Ice, water, fire, thunder, plant, poison, earth, and air. This gave him a virtually unrivaled edge over these pitiful mortals. All wasn't well, though. Now that Darkly had finally had to get his hands dirty, he was going to go all the way and wipe out the Church and it's affiliates. Azralite knew this. He had to stop now, or what happened to the Order would happen to his people too! Azralite would have to battle his ally, no, friend for the first time! Azralite quickly possessed one of the soldiers. Being the god of spirits, he didn't have a physical body of his own. This one would have to do. The two met on earth for the first time when Darkly was about to launch an opposing assault on the Church's capital, Arcadia City. The two both understood that there would only be one winner of this battle, and began fighting a fight like the world had never seen. Ultimately, the winner was Azralite, but at a heavy loss. The two island countries, Arcadia and Shadopia had been completely destroyed in the battle, and all that remained was a large whirlpool. Darkly, who thought himself to be invincible, discovered something that day, too. While, yes, in his homeland, The Void, he was invincible, in the face of Azralite's power, that was able to attack his spiritual form, he was virtually helpless. Just as Azralite was about to destroy Darkly, however, he remembered something. If Darkly died, his power would vanish, and the area that serves as a buffer for the dimensions, Darkly's realm, The Void, would vanish. The worlds would start merging, and everything would be over. So instead of allowing that to happen, Azralite devised a clever plan. He split Darkly's being into three pieces, Body, Mind, and Soul. The Mind Azralite would leave here in the Overworld, his Sould he would take back to Arcadia, Azralite's dimension, and the Body would be thrown back into The Void. He figured this would minimize the chances of something like the Church War happening ever again. Just as Azrralite had finished splitting Darkly into three, Darkly had made one last move. With the last of his power, Darkly bound Azralite's soul to the body that he was currently using, cursing him to forever be reincarnated in the Overworld, with none of his memories remaining. Darkly had been defeated, however he certainly got the last laugh. Thousands of years later, the world is much more stable. The Order of Darkly had shrunk so far after the first war, it became little more than a small basement cult, and the four remaining islands are quite content right now. Well, not really. The Dwarves, descendants of those few survivors of the Order of Darkly, are on the verge of a war with the Elves, descendants of the Church of Azralite. Azravain, Elf reincarnation of the great Azralite, has been demoted from great all-powerful God, to a small-time mercenary on a small Eastern island town. He has, however, heard of some scholar who was paying big bucks for any information on the rumored 'Crystal Shard' things. He didn't know much about them, just bits and pieces from the local elders who only talked about it so much because it was the only interesting story they knew. All the flier said was to meet up on a small port town on the Western island. Bah, what was there to lose? Azravain decided to hitch a ride from one of the local traders, and arrives there within a day or two...

And that's just the backstory of the backstory, we still have fourteen characters to go!

Fallen Legend: Thanks Fallen, she is from a group who has some antagonistic members, but she herself is actually benevolent in the comic version. In the movie version, she still has her personality, but she might find herself up against the heroes of the story. Well, I might actually use the comic version's plot and have her side with the heroes even though it brands her as a traitor since I never got to that point in the webcomic, and I was 2 chapters away from it too.

________________________________________________________________________

The movie version of the legendary beast girl. She wears fashionable boots?

You can see her in the cover of the webcomic's initial chapter, but her story arc was very far away. http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Ultranimu/5366100/

Speaking of which, I was suppose to the draw the movie version of the ninja and flower girl. Eh, I guess another day.

At least I managed to draw the beetle dude, lol. The red beetle.

Plus, instead of initially being the Dragon's nemesis like she was in the comics, their friends in the movie version.

On a note about the butterfly lady, she is part of the group known as the Entono Imperial Guard.

They're also called the Bug Brigade.

In the webcomics version, they were among the few groups in the galaxy capable of fighting the likes of the 5 beasts.

A fight I never got to in the webcomics version.

Here's Lady Butterfly using her weapon, which is a fan shaped like a buttefly wing. She does stuff like spread hallucigenic dust or offensively, explosive dust. She also shoots butterflies made of energy.

Wing Fan.

Some members are obviously villanous, like this guy. Bug villain.

Played around with some brushes, note that photoshop did something to the image in the middle. [lol]

Lady butterfly, psychedelic.

Fedora Pirate, I think you do the best work with figures in this thread, even with a cartoony style. I also love the Western/steampunk aesthetic you've got in your art.

I disappear for a bit and miss an awesome compliment. Thank you so much. A much needed boost since I began working on proper comic pages and learning comics is harder than it seems.

Here's a silly WIP from one of the panels Then a sketch/concept for an executioner's outfit.

Wanted to add another WIP but I don't have it uploaded and I am too lazy to bother... so that's it! Time to disappear into the land of Drawing Comic Pages Forever once again.

@Yuanchosaan: While I can understand who you could be critical of those sketches—the left eye of the man was slightly out of perspective, and therefore a touch wonky—your overall skill level is extremely high and your style is remarkably realistic.

I would love to know what you thought of my own dumb little sketches, but at the same time there is something jarring about having your work looked over by someone far more advanced in a given area than you are.

@Fulgrate - I didn't realise you had a proper comic up... though, I think I would redesign the site you have it on. It took me a bit to orient myself between the banner art, the background art, and the comic art, the comic buttons also got a bit lost.

I think I'd recommend applying colour to the banner, a solid background with colour that ties into the banner or a neutral colour, navigation buttons that state clearly what they do in an easily readable font, and then leave the comic proper pages as is.

Alternately just make the background solid black. That alone would help a lot.

Please don't take this all the wrong way 'cause I like your art and I'd love to read the comic but the way the page is set up lacks readability.

@Loni: I love it! grin

@JHM: Thank you. I think that it's perfectly acceptable for artists of differing levels of skill to give criticism and advice to each other, so long as the criticism is tailored to the skill level and style of the person being critiqued. But it can still be a bit awkward at times... I like to know the person before I give criticism, so I know how they'll react, whether they want criticism and if they are seeking to improve.

I like this one a lot. There's something very neat about the composition and the writing which fits together perfectly. It reminds me a little of an Edward Gorey illustration. Your faces here and here are very expressive. You've got a sort of dense way with linework, (a little like Son of Mine Noaq, come to think of it), which is quite atmospheric. That got away from you a bit here - it's hard to tell what's going on in this drawing.
