Maybe the difference with Rayleigh is that he was more partner than subordinate. Roger calls him partner at their final time meeting and he seems to have been Roger's first crewmate. To compare, Zoro actively subordinates himself to Luffy, never taking charge unless Luffy's absent or needs to be reminded of things.
Ace is the main hole in this theory, though. We know he had conqueror haki but he was content to serve under Whitebeard. Unless Zoro does show conqueror haki down the line or we learn what determines it, it's the main difference I can see.
I just hope Oda won't pull some kind of "he has conqueror but it's kept in check by keeping his eye shut" deal.

I don't think we're actually going to find out more about it than we do now, that is: only a (relatively few) are born with it, you can't train it like the others, and people who have it are usually special but not all special people have it.
Those with the "Biggest Names" tend to have C Haki
I think its less being a leader... and more being Larger then life!
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole! In RPG terms, I'd say Conqueror's Haki would be a Charisma-based skill, unlocked when your charisma reachs super-superhuman levels. So, you can sort of "get" it but you can't train specifically towards it. You can get it by becoming the kind of person who has it, but that kind of person wouldn't worry about getting it. Sort of like real-life charisma.
Wasn't Whitebeard grooming him?
‘My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’If Zoro opening his eye becomes key to conquerer's haki, I'm dropping this series like a bad habit.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I don't particularly understand why people think he can open his eye or if he did something would happen.
Seriously, if something like that were to happen, I wouldn't find it "cool" it would be stupid and frankly shitty.
Because it's anime. A HELL FUCKING LOT of times whenever an eye is closed or covered it 1)gets opened and 2)hosts a secret power. (Particularly when it's just ONE eye. When a character is fully blind we are guaranteed a badass without them opening.)
Even when people don't seriously think he will, they still say it as a joke. I'm with that category.

Sort of like how Sanji was clearly hiding something in the eye that has always been covered by his hair during the first half of the series.
A SUBVERSION ONLY DISTRACTS YOU FROM THE POSSIBILITY
There's also the fact that both of Sanji's eyes are functional otherwise.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.If Zoro does ever open his left eye I hope it'd be something weird or fucked up. Maybe a seastone eyeball in case of emergencies. Or just no eyeball at all.
Why can't he open that eye anyway?
(my tumblr) (my fics) (anime i watch)Training accident.
Or just to look cool. He's that kinda guy.
Secret SignatureIts probably just an empty socket knowing him.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Sharingans. Sharingans everywhere.
A seastone eyeball would be hilarious.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyAn eye made of Sharingans. Not an eye with the Sharingan; MADE of them. Zoro went to the Naruto universe and killed all the Uchiha's ever and took JUST their Sharingans and put them all into his eye.
So Zoro was the man behind the man behind the man behind the man behind the Uchiha massacre.
I still think Zoro might have it. Recall that gang of bounty hunters he scared off at Sabaody?
No, I don't remember that. If he does it would be really weird for it to be showcased once(?) and then never again or even mentioned.
And he clearly knows what it is.
Zoro has shown that a few times like with the CD and Monet.
Edit:I don't he has it, but it has been pointed out he gives a certain aura. I forgot the term.

‘My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’Also, you know how, if you supercompress coal, it turns into diamonds? Same deal with Sharingans, except that if you supercompress Sharingans, they turn into gold because Sharingans are worse than coal. Zoro's eye is currently made of gold and, thousands of years after his death, his eye will be the only thing remaining and it will be called the 'Millennium Eye' by a future society of children's card game playing enthusiasts.
If that's the case that's clearly "Killing Intent". It's been called such in the series.

Thanks.
‘My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’
If he had it you'd think he'd have shown it by now. And I wouldn't like it just showing up. And it's not like all important people have it.
Edit: Also, wanted to be the world's best swordsmen isn't really trying to change the world. It doesn't mean much to most people.
