Not for a very very very very very long time.

Wait for the art to improve first.

. . . I'm just going to shake my head at the argument near the end of the last page and walk away for now.
Sakamoto demands an explanation for this shit.
254 Cakman, Tue, 16th Nov '10 11:09:27 AM from whence he came.
  • Wait, why does Justin bring up Elliot? Is he gay?
  • Also, Susan once again reassures us of her straightness. Is this the second or third time?
  • And Grace is back to being stupid.

  • Sarah's Waldo costume is also form-fitting. How quaint.
  • The female squirrel does indeed confuse me. I mean, given the squirrel's clothes right now, it honestly wouldn't make a difference whether it was male or female, (not that I'm complaining about that. The longer we keep the females out of stripper outfits, the better, I suppose. Good lord, I am such a homosexual.).
  • I find it amusing that Sarah is painting the one thing that Shive himself never seems to paint. It's like he's living his dreams through her.

  • Jeeze. He actually makes explaining the joke into a technique here. He has Sarah explain the joke first- the reason he's in the schoolgirl outfit. However this explanation alone is not enough to warrant the joke, as otherwise, we probably would have just taken it to be another bit of cosplaying. Therefore, in order to be fully assured that the cleverness has been drained from the strip, he explains the joke again in the title card, thereby rendering the acceptable joke-explanation unacceptable. It's almost like he's doing it to spite me. Where was I in 2002?
  • I'd make a Pervert Tedd notation here, but since it's sort of just about crossdressing, I don't want to imply that crossdressing is perverted by itself, as Edmania will get pissed off at me. But then again, I don't think he really reads this liveblog. Ah well. I'll do half a one, or an uncolored one.

  • Daniel, Ellen is not a real person. She is a character that you created, and have drawn a few times in a stereotypical french maid outfit. She does not harbor grudges against you. This is because she is not a real person.
  • Also, Daniel, you would gain gigantic stretchmarks if that happened to you.

  • This comic would not annoy me if Justin weren't there. He is rapidly becoming my most disliked (or, for the optimists, least favorite) character of the lot. He has zero character traits beyond "Justin is gay man. Gay man have crush on Elliot." Every single comic so far in which he makes some sort of an observation about Elliot, he can't seem to make one without adding "-by the way, I'd really like to fuck him." to the end of it. And this just becomes more enraging to me when I consider that it is quite likely that Shive is doing this because he thinks it gives Justin character. Giving a person a trait and having them display that trait over and over again doesn't make them any less two-dimensional. It makes them appear like there's nothing else to them, and, in this situation, it is becoming more and more apparent that Justin is only a cast member of El Goonish Shive because Dan Shive one day thought to himself "Hmm, you know, I'd like to have one of the characters be a gay guy." That is bad writing. A character should not stem from the notion "let's make a gay person, " just as they shouldn't stem from "Let's make a female, " or "Let's make a black person, " (Greg, by the way.). If they do stem this way, there is nothing to justify their existence other than the same tired trait being repeated ad nauseaum.
  • Also, Ellen has Chun-Li thighs.
  • I'm also unaware as to the reason that the word "sweaty" was added to the pillow fight. It makes it... Sort of uncomfortable. I don't want to be covered in other people's sweat.
  • And what in God's name is that brown thing in the middle of the floor?! I... guess that it's supposed to be a pillow, but it really looks... Disgusting.

255 Cakman, Thu, 18th Nov '10 6:01:03 PM from whence he came.
  • She kinda looks like Link.
  • She also now has her forehead wound turned into an Indian marriage mark.

  • Other than that, though, he kinda cheated the reader out here. C'mon, you can't give us maybe a second panel.
  • And thank you for the lovely title description, just in case we needed to be brushed up.

  • Feh. Enjoy your back problems and tenderness once a month, dick.
  • Speaking of which, I never did quite understand what it meant when they said that girls' breasts can feel "tender" as a symptom of pms. What does "tenderness" feel like? Besides, like, you know, "tender heart"?
  • Nanase's mouth is oddly-shaped. It looks like a heart.
  • If this horseshit doesn't stop, I'm going to implement another link to every "HAY GUYS JUSTIN IS GAY" line too. Possibly involving bestiality.

  • Okay, this is just silly. I honestly laughed at this strip. The combination of the gigantic breasts, green skin with Srs Biznes face, and Lord Tedd. If this were a farcical webcomic, it would be fantastic.
  • Why doesn't the goo run away at that point? Wouldn't that be the smarter point of action?

  • Well. Way to hammer into the ground the clever joke you had so many comics ago.
  • Murals was funny as a one-note joke. If you continue to reuse it, it's inevitably going to begin getting old.
  • Where'd he get that hat on such short notice?

  • Neither relief or disappointment. I am simply amazed that you are actually trying to do this.
  • Because naturally, all women are whores, so becoming more feminine would make Ellen more of a slut.

  • The cat pack is back together.
  • Not much to this strip though.

  • Another useless strip. WE SAW IT, GUYS. We don't need another explanation.
  • Also, what was the point of transforming Elliot in the first place, then?

  • Hedge... Clever, Shive. Clever. But I will lose all respect for you if you mention that his hair is where the whole hedge thing comes from.
  • But other then that, Hedge has a ridiculous fashion sense.
  • He has a pimp coat? Is that a pimp coat? Or a Santa coat?

  • I wasn't aware that Tedd's father was British. What a tweest!
  • Actually, this may be the best strip so far. It puts a whole new spin on the entire comic. All of the characters might have accents!
  • Also, if they were wearing the same clothes, Nanase and Ellen would be near-identical in this strip.

# Wait, why does Justin bring up Elliot? Is he gay?

At that point in the story, being gay and crushing on Elliott are pretty much his only two traits. He's fleshed out a bit since then.
But soft! What rock through yonder window breaks? It is a brick! And Juliet is out cold.
If by "fleshed out" you mean that he has 'nerd' and 'likes to play with hair' as traits now, then yeah, his character got fleshed out. I mean, that's a 100% increase in traits.

Then you remember the set-up for the latest story-arc was just Justin inviting Elliot to the comic book shop he works at because he is gay and has a crush on Elliot and realise that those two are the only traits that actively matter when dealing with Justin. He remained virtually unchanged in the eight years he had been in the comic.

In case you're wondering about my absence, I've been unfortunately stressed this week, but I should be back later this day since it is friday, and if not there is always the weekend, and if not, there is always thanksgiving break.

Feel free to harrass me if I don't do it. It helps.

Did anyone hear anything just now? Or was that the wind blowing really hard? I can't tell. Anywho, I really appreciate all the comments that you guys have been making on my liveblog. It's hard being the single writer on it- I won't lie. But it's worth it for the fans. It's worth it for the fans.

Ohhh, does he like comic books? Another fantastic addition! So he'll have four things to do- tell us that he' gay, tell us that he has a crush on a straight guy, tell Nanase that she's gay, AND make "obscure" comic book references!

Strip 241

  • I've been staring at first panel for about five minutes. I keep trying to say something witty.I could say something about Susan's lack of mouth. I could say something about Ellen's noodle arm. I could say something about her bad running. Something about how she seems to be turned her waist and only her waist to three/fourths while the rest of her is at one half. Something about her shoulders being nonexistant.
  • But I can't. I'm too confused by how Shive managed to pull off that much wtf-inducing moments in one panel.
  • And her jump physics are off too. Her initial rise is at a much higher slope than her descent downwards. Yes.

  • I'm supposed to be excited by this aren't I?
  • But...why? There was never any suspense to begin with! And no, I am not talking about the whole "we knew they would get out" problem. I am referring to the entire set up in this fight. There never was really any danger in this fight.
  • Yes, Nanase and Ellen were almost sporked. Yet...there really wasn't much danger. There was no ass kicking, on either side, there was no one being thrown around, no stupid plans that ended REALLY badly, no Oh Crap moments. Nothing. Just stalling. Stalling. Stalling.
  • Stalllllllllliiiinnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggggg- ggggggggggggggg
  • Teamwork aside, lets make this fight one on one. Mano y mana de mano. It was still a beam stall. It's not fun to watch as the rule, with the exception being the occasional time it's awesome.

Strip 242

  • Well. I don't know about you, but I for one adore the gradient used.
  • The underwear lines. Their back. This bothers me.
  • Heh. Eheheh. Lookit her shoes. They're just black lumps.
  • At least her hands are nice.
  • Also, the way that tie is positioned...I wanna say porn star. I really do.

  • The title makes me facepalm, it really does.
  • A full panel shot is nice for drama-ness, but it would have been nice if we had seen more beam, more damage, and less...
  • ...
  • ...
  • fetishy.

Strip 243

  • Covered in green slime my ass. Considering how they were affected by the goo up until that point, the explanation is really really stupid.
  • See Grace's lovely, shiny, supah kawaii desu new form? Notice how it wasn't used at all? Yeah.
  • Justin. Playing matchmaker for Nanase, just in case the readers don't get it yet. This is going to happen a LOT folks. Seriously, EVERYONE wants the two to get together, and it's pathetic. Everytime I see it, I hope more and more they realize they don't get together. Of course, it's rather foolish to hope that, since they do indeed get together, somewhere in 2005-6.

Strip 244

  • Can't the goo just...regather the rest of the goo and be ready for another fight?
  • Lord Tedd is an idiot. Let's say that the whole Ellen Elliot thing never happened. Greg and company could still kick the ever loving crap out of that thing. Tedd wasn't even in the building! Why send the goo there of all places? Why have him go after Tedd? Wasn't the objective (at this point) to kill all the Tedds?

Strip 245

  • Note that his mustache is now too bushy to be a hitler mustache.
  • It's also Luxury, not luxary.

Strip 246

  • And back to greyscale. Whee.
  • Susan's middrift got smaller.

  • That did not happen when the v-5 gun blasted Elliot. And it never happens when Ellen blasts Tedd or someone else.
  • I love plot holes.
  • But, to Shive's credit, his snarkiness has gotten much better. Susan is almost entertaining now. How she knew how to handle Ellen is beyond me.

Strip 247

  • Seriously, this shoe thing is starting to creep me out.
  • Oh. Right. Lack of color. No more gradients to make the backgrounds nicer. Curses.
  • For a long time, I thought Elliot was running in the zoom crash panel. Only now I realize it's not.

  • You know what I did when I read this strip? I suddenly started thinking about my own story, and got really pumped. And then I got distracted, and when I went back to EGS, I was trying to refind the point that got me pumped. Then I remembered it had nothing to do with EGS.
  • And there really isn't anything much to get mad over these days in large chunks. That's what's gonna suck about going further into EGS. It's more of an in general shittiness than obvious able-to-point-it-out shittiness.
  • Also-
  • Wait.
  • Why the fuck is it half speech bubbles half lineyness?
  • —goes back to last strip—
  • O_O
  • Why would you...
  • —ahem—
  • Anywho, yeah, Elliot and Tedd returning JUST as the goo is destroyed is also a bit of a cheap move on Shive's part. But understandable. It's to smooth the flow of drama. After all, too much expo-ing while the goo is there would be rather odd.

Strip 248

  • So...why is Susan smiling? And everyone else is emotionless minus Ellen? This annoys me. It kinda dulls what little personality they have, in my opinion.

  • OK. I lied. Elliot was turned into a cat form for another reason. So Hedge could see him and kick off the next super drama arc that will eventually come. But once again, the reasoning he turned into a cat was a pointless plot thread. Shive seems to know that he wants to get from Point A to Point C, but completely stomps all over Point B in the process. Ain't that what Bleach like? Not even a take that, honestly wondering.

Strip 249

  • I don't know if this is just me, but it seems like he does not have Hedge's facial structure down just yet.

  • You'd think Tedd would be WAYY more shaken that he had just ran into a relative of Grace. And why are Grace and Hedge all happy happy?
  • And why are they wearing clothes? Weren't they all nude-y?
  • And who would have taken a picture of them? They were lab rats, weren't they?

Sketchbook Strip 122202

Yeah, that'd be horrible! Imagine seeing a MALE in a sexual pose! It'd be madness I tell you. Madness.

Strip 250

  • Why is Tedd such a boring character? We don't see him react. He's just this stoic little brat. He gets better, but I have no idea why Shive thought it would be a good idea to portray him this way.
  • Grace is a anthro squirrel. You are seriously not interested in that, at all? AT ALL? Instead, you're interested in Elliot with boobs?
  • Elliot, you just heard Hedge's voice. Why would you not know who it is? Silly lack of voice in comics...
  • Why can't both be done? You're not a single mass entity. You can diverge your energies.
  • Justin. You sound like one of those late rpg characters that were awkwardly put in last minute, desperately trying to insert yourself into the plot. You have no say in this. You're just a random kid. In fact, Susan, Justin, Greg, Nanase and almost even Sarah have NOTHING to do with this. At all.
262 Cakman, Fri, 19th Nov '10 2:58:52 PM from whence he came.
If Elliot and Nanase weren't meant to be together, why would a sex change help? It's still Elliot. It's just Elliot unchanged from the transformation!

94. Grandmaster of Shark
I guess at this point she already randomly became an independent character, for some reason. But hey, we didn't had any explanation for her behavior before, why should we get one know?

As for your AHR, I am sure you had a lot of points, but I got distracted with banging my head against the wall, because Tedd an Grace have such a completely lack of chemistry. If it weren't for the almighty plot, there would be no chance this two would ever become a couple.

So, to the next arc, where we meet the most overblown character in this comic: Damien, the embodiment of Small Name N Big Ego.

264 Gilphon, Fri, 19th Nov '10 4:02:03 PM from The Third Sound Relationship Status: Having tea with Cthulhu
Hey, for once I have an issue with things that AHR didn't mention! Whee!

The Goo splashing is weird. Sarah has big splotch in the middle of her shirt, and nothing elsewhere. Somewhat odd, that. More jarring, though, is the way everyone else is completely untouched, despite not really being any distance from Sarah at all. What the hell's up with that?

Strip 251

  • The third panel pisses me off. Becaue it's a good panel, and once again shows that Shive is being lazy. Art shifts are cool and all, but when the quality is significantly better than standard for no reason other than being amount of effort, it just makes it frustrating, because it makes me feel as if Shive could be a LOT better, but he isn't.
  • Dear lord. I've become Tsundere for Shive.

  • Mr. Verres. You are wearing a large overcoat. Wouldn't that make more sense?
  • Greg has no pairing possibilities, so he's not needed for the plot.

Strip 252

  • You know, I just realized, Justin really has no business being here. His presence is starting to annoy me. At least Greg was upfront about it. Justin is here because....because....I DON'T KNOW! I SERIOUSLY DON'T KNOW!
  • And to think, I originally set out to have that bullet complain about Nanase and Justin's vacant uncaring souless eyes.
  • Ellen is beginning to show signs of heavy inking.

  • Now, I know Elliot is not The Wesley, but when I read that second panel, I got serious Shilling The Wesley vibes. Why would Susan realize his kindness in what he was saying? SHE HAS NO IDEA ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON!
  • Did...did Tedd literally say that to his dad? I mean, geez, that's just cheeky. I'd expect it from Cakman, but not Tedd.
  • And technically, Ellen is kinda a bad person. She left Elliot and Tedd stranded, harrassed a teacher, harrassed the principal...

Strip 253

  • Grace's open shirt is beginning to annoy me. That whole nipple thing always bugs me. You can show every part of the boob, but for the love of god, don't show the nipple. Also, if she was wearing that, it'd probably be erect due to coldness, but I'm not gonna get mad at Shive for not showing that. I will get mad at him for feeling the need to have it be right at the edge.

Strip 254

  • Hwhat? Show TEDD shirtless you say? Absolutely preposterous.
  • Nanase with that goo formation mildly creeps me out. Not sure why though.

  • Yes. Because bad communication is how these things go about, Sarah. Nothing happens until a comic is made. You will know NOTHING until a comic starts. Your life will remain a stagnant HELL.
  • Tedd groped Grace. I want you to have that image engrained in your poor feeble mind. They groped, made out, and had slobbery almost sex.

Strip 255

  • Oh dear god. What in the world did Shive do to that poor ring? o.o I can draw better than that, and I suck at drawing. Compared to Shive, anyway.
  • That last panel. Nanase's boob is too wide. Hrm.

  • The exposition. Too much. Too pointless. X_x
  • OK, the meow joke is not THAT bad. I can live with it.
  • The narration joke...not so much.
  • But hey, look at the bright side! Justin now has an actual trait outside of his sexuality!

Strip 256

  • That shower scene is oddly well drawn. To the point I'd use that face, but I don't have that face in my arsenal.

  • And so, the Hedge plot is promptly dropped for one whole year.

Strip 237

  • That Grace looks very...not General Shadetail.
  • No matter what dimension they are in, the characters will always have the same hair style, just of a varying length. No exceptions.

  • And Grace is hinted to be dead. This is dropped for half a year.

Sketchbook Strip 011203

Oh Shive you weeaboo stereotyping simpleton you.

Strip 258

  • Where'd the couch go?
  • First panel goes breast expansion, but the rest seem fine.

  • Susan going to France. dropped for about seven years and five months.
  • Why am I bringing these things up? Because any of these plot threads would be much more interesting than what we are going to be subjected to.

Strip 259

  • I call this proof that cursed form or not, Ellen still sees herself as a male. So, does Tedd try to be nice and zap her to a male form? Or, even MORE logically since that only lasts a month, does Ellen look into any transexual programs?
  • Don't be ridiculous. Transexuality does not exist in this series!
  • And the V-5 beam also acts as a seratonin drug. Why? Because fuck you it just does.

Strip 260

  • Hey look. Legit good SFX. Yay.
  • Why is the outside of the house monotone?

  • Can these two not drive without the other the hell?
  • No, Ellen, No you don't. You're wearing a generic jacket and a generic black t-shirt, and Tedd NEVER wore his shirt like that.
  • Jeebus. Stereotypical Japanese mum ahoy.

Prepare for more lesbian shipping, female crying, and wonky eyes!

"I call this proof that cursed form or not, Ellen still sees herself as a male. So, does Tedd try to be nice and zap her to a male form? Or, even MORE logically since that only lasts a month, does Ellen look into any transexual programs?" (How do you even do proper quotes on this thing?)

As far as proof is concerned, let's not forget her yelling "Booyah! Still one of the guys!" in the next proper story-arc. It really makes you think that Dan wanted to have Ellen deal with gender identity issues somewhere along the way, doesn't it?

Anyway, this is one of those things that Dan elaborated on in the forum. Apparently the Diamond makes it so that the manifested curse or however you wanna call it is attuned to its current form, so naturally Ellen is female in mind. You know, despite her mind, personality and memories all basically being copied from Elliot, a guy.

Also, and this might be getting a wee bit too far ahead for now, but there's one other case of forced/permanent transformation, and that time Dan side-steps the gender-identity issue by mentioning on the forum how the person in question never had a gender identity to begin with.

So yeah, no such thing as transsexuality or transgenderism in a comic whose single biggest prevailing theme is gender-bending.

268 AC Drawings, Sat, 20th Nov '10 5:19:38 PM from MY PERSONAL REALITY
Huh, you're right about the transsexualism thing .And I didn't think about Tedd transforming her.. In fact, he could do that! It would've made sense for him to find a way to extend the transformation life of the gun and changed Ellen! I mean they were already going to use the "Gave away the twin due to lack of money" thing anyway, it just... gah!

It's clear this only happened to get Nanase out of the closet.

@Noxi: Ah, yeah, that makes sense, considering the wolf from the journal was as vicious as a normal wolf. But alas, the poor writing rather messed that part up.

Although, I am unsure how Elliot/Ellen never had a gender identity to begin with. Surely s/he would identify as something, and considering how she saw herself as Elliot, she might see herself has a man, or something to that extent. Maybe she would be both? Pangendered, or something. There are tropers like that, I know.

As for the quoteblocks, Fast Eddie does not like the idea of a simple quoting system, it's his one big thing, but you need to do two brackets, quoteblock, two end brackets, text, two brackets, /quoteblock, two end brackets.

Yup. Transgendered individuals don't exist in this comic, and sexuality is something that can be modified on a whim with a quick zap and produces no mental trauma or homicidal rage towards the one who fired it or invented it. Also, the added sexuality is always hetero. Also if you end up pregnant you get mode-locked as a female form until the term's up.

Supposedly all this is because the device was designed by some weird alien species to improve fertility chances in endangered species. It just happens to produce results that are in keeping with certain (primarily male) fetish interests. Yeeeeaaaaah.

Sorry if I spoiled anything.

@Noxi: Ah, yeah, that makes sense, considering the wolf from the journal was as vicious as a normal wolf. But alas, the poor writing rather messed that part up.

Let's not forget that the wolf norm never had the original form's mind to begin with. It always had the mind of a vicious beast, or rather the a beast's lack of mind, so of course the manifested curse would be a vicious beast as well.

Meanwhile the zapped Elliot still had his own mind. I suppose calling foul on an explanation is exactly fair, but it's just that the explanation itself only serves to explain why the new chick doesn't hate being stuck with beasts.

Actually, no, it's probably fair to cry foul on that one. Ellen will eventually say that her attraction to men feel tacked on fake. So much for the Diamond adjusting the curse person to its new form, eh?

Oh, and I didn't mean to suggest that Dan ever said Elliot and Ellen had no gender identity, that was referring to another character. Although, and I might be misremembering things here so don't quote me on this, but I think he did say that they have a more, uhm, 'loose' gender-identity which just served to explain why Elliot's totally cool with growing a uterus half the time nowadays.

—yawn— Morning y'all. Woke up today, watch the newest episode of one piece (TT_TT the tension as I wait for the inevitable is almost more painful than what's going to happen), and decided that since I have an essay to do, what better way to put it off than putting He's a Pirate on repeat and reviewing more EGS?

Strip 261

  • Once again, Shive has REALLY improved on the sfx.
  • distorted Tedd looks...well...

  • That's right Nanase, laugh at foolish Ellen. She's wearing two shirts with no midrift! With that cup size! She knows nothing about being a girl.
  • This joke isn't THAT overused, and it's fairly OK, just seems OOC for Elliot. Granted, he's pretty bland to start out with, but he seems more wet towelly than this.
  • So, did I mention NANASE and ELLEN are gonna be PAIRED together and be LESBIANS together? Cause if not, I will later! Over. And over. Again.

Strip 262

  • It's very obvious from the inking that the third and second to last panels were given much more attention than the others. This...vaguely disturbs me.

  • See, I get what Mr. Verres is saying and all, but he's missing one point. Ellen's brain was built up with every ounce of logic and thought that went into those actions, and everything else in between.
  • It's like if if I made an artificial human convinced it had been, oh, I don't know, raped as a kid. Sure, it never happened, but it's going to affect how they think, how they act, and how they go about life just the same. It's why people will act really oddly when they misjudge a situation. Sure, they were not personally attacked when you disagreed about whether tapioca tasted good or not, but they took it that way, and are thus going to act that way. This is why, while this explanation sorta makes sense, is a bit of bullshit. She might be able to take responsibility, but her mind set is exactly the same. Or at least, it should be.
  • And once again, crying females. I looked ahead, I think I ACTUALLY found a place a male cries! I mean, sure it's male Grace but it's better than nothing! Right? right?

Strip 263

  • And so the inking gets inkier. Whoohoo.
  • I love this strip. So many eye gaffes.
  • I mean, just LOOK at Sarah in the second panel, and Elliot in the third and penultimate. Lovely.
  • Nanase's sweater somehow made her boobs larger. How.

  • Because Justin you dolt, you are a worthless character that has done NOTHING in the story. NOTHING! Oh, sure, you did ONE thing, but even that? EVEN THAT? Couldda been done by anyone. You. Are. Worthless!
  • I'd be more accepting of Elliot's reasoning if the whole thing just didn't reak of shippity shipness. Y'know? Like, if Nanase was really going to end up with, say, random chick X, I'd be cool with this. But since she's not, it's very manipulative and contrived.

Strip 264

  • And even more ink now. See Cakman? Art evolution!'

  • I will admit, this strip is nicely awkward. But it also proves that Nanase was not a very good choice here. Sure, relation wise it might have made sense, but new relationships can be formed. Easily. Very easily.

Strip 265

  • Ooooh. Ooooh. I know the answer to this one! "Are you OK? Do you want to talk about it?"
  • Once again, this strip I can appreciate to a certain extent, but the problem is, after this Ellen is for the most part, completely fine. She turns into super hyper peppy cat girl. It's that foresight that makes me very cold hearted to this strip.

Sketchbook Strip 012103

One year of comics binged so far. Only eight more years to go.

So, we've gone from this

to that. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.

Oh, and Justin is a one dimensional twit and Shive needs to find new jokes.

Strip 266

  • Nanase is wearing a SWEATER. It doesn't look like a tight one either. It should not be even slightly form fitting.

  • Once again, I'd be much more inclined to accept this if I didn't know these two were being paired together. And it's not like the readers of the time didn't know. It had been hinted multiple times by this point. EVERYONE knew. If this was the first time we EVER saw them interacting, no lesbian hints, no nothing, this might have been OK. But no. We are forced to suffer through all the subtlety of a jackhammer.

Strip 267

  • —snerk— Dem shoes...

  • OK, the I don't want to let go was pushing it.
  • Who would laugh at that? I mean, think about everything she went through, and more importantly, the fact that she's bawling her eyeballs out. They should all have a group hug, if anything.
  • But of course, it's to show more Nanase Ellen lurv. Ellen is not allowed to be emotional for anyone else.

Strip 268

Dear lord...

This annoying plot node.

I hate it. Hate it hate it hate it hate it HATE IT. It's like Shive was TRYING to be a douche bag.

Sketchbook Strip 012603

Do you LIKE making comics loaded with unfortunate implications? Do you LIKE having such a hazy grasp of gender that I doubt you've ever actually gone into the outside world at all? Do you LIKE making Justin nothing but a MOCKERY and something I would almost expect from some ignorant episode of Family Guy?

I want to be nice to you Shive, I really do. I don't want to be one of those reviewers that hates irrationally, wishing death wishes and what else have you just to be cool. But you make that so frigging hard sometimes!

Strip 269

And so we enter an endless recursion of "This could have all been avoided IF..."

I hate this series.

Strip 270

Hey, hey, hey, remember those two characters that aren't important to the plot AT ALL? Lets make a joke about them because it's FUNNY! Oooh! Oooh! I know! Lets make a purposeful OOC moment for Susan! We can use uneven background lines for the effect, and super exaggerated moŽ eyes! And then we're gonna EXPLAIN the joke in a tiny little miniscule panel! BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT!

These strips are getting physically painful for me to read. This is one of my least favorite parts of the comic. Not even rage unfavorite, just X_x make it stoooppp unfavorite.

Great reasoning there Elliot, but did you forget that Nanase has absolutely no connection to her whatsoever? She just broke up with you a few days earlier because she doesn't actually has any feelings for you. That would make a bad person for Ellen to talk to. Also, at this point she isn't out of the closet, not even to herself, so what makes her better than Justin in term of attraction to boys? And for that, Ellen has to come to term with her existence as a being without a life, I am sure her sex life can take a beak seat for now. Yeah, Elliot, you should talk to her, because she is you, so you are the best person in the whole fucking world to talk to her. You are only own who can give her any reassurance, any acceptance at this point.

The only reason for the those two two to talk to each other is blunt shipping. If you can tell it only happens for the plot and not as a logical result of their characterization, it is bad writing. This why I don't like EGS. Almost everything concerning relationships and characterization sucks. Is Ellen her own person now, or is she Elliot in a female body? Because this last few strips tell us that she is the latter, while the comic itself treats it as if it were the former.

..and what the hell is the point of this machine, outside of making the entire arc '''completely pointless?!
