Good question.

Also one to which we the audience know the answer. Which somehow makes things worse.

[up]It does? I'm not so sure. Either way, I prefer that Nagato. She has better chemistry with Kyon than "regular" Nagato. You know, like any other character.

[up][up]Yeah, I know. It's just funny considering how the character is otherwise thought as.

Man we should start giving model numbers to the Yukis we have had, I keep getting mixed up on which people are referring to...

Like

  • Haruhi Yuki is Yuki 1.0
  • Haruhi disappearance is Yuki 2.0
  • Yuki-chan is Yuki 2.1
  • Yuki-chan disappearance (this arc) is Yuki 3.0

It sucks how this is going to only be 16 episodes though, although it will be at a perfect stopping point, we probably won't get a S2 till after Haruhi S3. And that won't happen till hell freezes over.

What is Nagaru Tanigawa even doing these days? Everything he's listed under in Wikipedia is either On hiatus or Complete.

Main canon: H!Yuki. Disappearance version: DH!Yuki.

Yuki-chan: Y!Yuki. "Disappeared" version: DY!Yuki. Haruhi-chan: HC!Yuki.

  HC!Yuki

H!Yuki > DH!Yuki > Y!Yuki

  DY!Yuki

Simple.

Episode 2 of the dub manages to make Ryoko sound genuinely motherly despite her protestations. Haruhi voiced by Wendee Lee suddenly sounds lacking, but that's what being compared to Aya Hirano does. Maybe she won't steal the show quite as much.

I had a similar thought about Asakura... but really, this is the subdued, no-adventure Haruhi anyway, so I doubt I will be disappointed once I see the second episode.

I'm surprised Aya Hirano came back for the role - there was a controversy surrounding her some years back that, I thought, ruined her career.

It Got Better.

Nah but for real though, as far as I know, the whole thing sort of boiled over after some time.

It was a really stupid controversy too.

"Aya Hirano is not a virgin and has sex?! That's disgusting, how dare she!" with a dash of "(...it would be ok if it was with me though)".

The mentality comes from the same place as the "waifu" thing, but it's extremely more disturbing when it is about real people and they have to live secret lives or risk a backlash.

Well, it was a bit more than that. It was also found that she had embezzled an employer, which was the immediate cause of her firing, but what her fanbase was outraged over was that she had been keeping polyamorous relationships with everyone in her band. Except the bassist. In a context where there are fans who yell murder if an idol/seiyuu is found to have a boyfriend, you can imagine how that went down.

But I got the impression she also wanted to retire from voice acting for a while, and now she's returning. And there's been a reaction to virgin fetishism going on among otaku, many of them conspicuously celebrate seiyuu getting married. Dunno if this applies to the more daring polyamory, though.

[up]x4 This Haruhi is just as adventurous, she just uses manipulation more to get what she wants instead of just ignoring the rules. Which is something the original Haruhi would do when she wants things like the BB Guns and such.

This Haruhi is a little more concerned about her self image with going to private school and all.

Episode 11. In which Nagato disappears. Well, technically that was the last episode, but anyway.

"She's a bit pushy." Well, that's a bit of an understatement. For roughly three girls in this series.

He's poking at her with a stick. Figuratively speaking.

Familiar sight.

Nah, she wouldn't stab him without a good reason. According to her.

I'm going to pretend the numbers on the board make sense and aren't just filler.

If he can understand and shift between the problems that fast after she tells him what to do, he shouldn't have any problems in the first place.

Episode 12. In which they go to the library.

She has a light step.

She looks vaguely familiar.

She still has her priorities straight.

This is kind of slow.

She got to say it.

With a Japanese seiyuu, I think not.

If you meant the dub, I've only seen the first episode, but no, I didn't hear an accent.

I'm gonna be so sad when regular Disappearance Nagato comes back, because I'm really liking this "throwback" Nagato from this arc.

This show is making me want to go back to the novels, I stopped at Dissociation after binge reading the entire series when that was the latest one and never went after the subsequent volumes.

Well, it's done.

Not the series, I mean, but, you know.

To quote what I said at another forum:

Tear my heart out and serve it to me on a silver platter, why don't you.

It would probably hurt less than this.

Episode 13. In which a sad violin piano plays.

I think Ryoko wanted to go to the amusement park.

I think the episode wants to be deep, introspective, and melancholic, but kind of only manages to be slow and dull. Sums up why Nagato doesn't work that well as a protagonist.

Make up your mind, Ryoko. Do you want her to tell you or not?

Don't really have much to say about the episode.

Episode 3. A wild Haruhi app-

Someone already made this joke.

I can't help but feel a little existential when Nagato gets "flashes" from the original universe.

So, in hindsight, TMOHS is a battle between Kyon and Haruhi, flowing with anime references and technobabble. Haruhi wants Santa to exist, Kyon doesn't (at least initially).

And watching Disappearance so far, I have this to say: this is a universe where Kyon wins. In Haruhi canon prime, Haruhi wins, because aliens, espers, and travelers exist, and Kyon has to adapt. In Disappearance, Kyon wins because of the setting, and Haruhi's mission is doomed from the start. And that's dandy.

It's also really fun to see Nagato interact with Haruhi outside of nods and spellcheck. Since Nagato's the main character, I expected a little more friction between them, but it seems that's gone to Kyon instead.

I can't wait to see how Asakura acts around Haruhi.

I can't believe Haruhi's managed to barge into the clubroom in this universe too.

Oh, I guess there wasn't much conflict between Asakura and Haruhi. Tsuruya, though... o_o

Ryoko, Haruhi, and Tsuruya make for a fun little triangle. There are quite a few intersting interactions between them. Especially the first two, I'd say.

Not sure why you'd expect friction between Nagato and, well, anyone. She's not a very frictionous person.

Well not friction, but I'd expected Nagato to get annoyed with the way Haruhi and Kyon interact. She did when Mikuru acted all cutesy around Kyon. Nagato wouldn't start a fist fight about it, but she'd be irritated.

Instead, Haruhi inspired her and they quickly became... in fact, Haruhi outright took over her club barely a day after Nagato resuscitated it.

One more episode to go, I think, and then an OVA if I remember correctly. I wonder if at the end of that we'll ever so briefly see Sasaki animated, since she does show up at the end of the homework completion chapter.

Anyways, a beach episode means fanservice, and, yep, not bucking the trend or anything. I always found it somewhat oddly amusing though that left to her own devices that Mikuru chooses a much, much more risque swimsuit than the one Haurhi forced on her in Lone Island Syndrome.
