So if I understood this correctly, Yukari's yelling at her past self for doing whatever it is she did to become the gap youkai?

I dunno, a powerset that starts with "whatever the hell you feel like and its opposite" and ends with Thinking Up Portals seems worth it to me.

So if I understood this correctly, Yukari's yelling at her past self for doing whatever it is she did to become the gap youkai?

Sorta. To me it sounds like the knowledge she's gained of the phantsmal world of the Youkai is something she does not wishes upon anyone, least of all herself. It would have been better to not know and fear the dark, than to look behind the illusory seams of the visible world and see the truth beyond. A child's innocence is more worth than knowing the truths of this world.

Of course, this becomes open to interpretation when you consider certain factors. Is the child Yukari speaks to human or youkai? And what does she see between the seams? The spirit side of the world normally invisible to humans, or the great maddening Gap? Is this a heartfelt show of regret over the path to becoming the Gap Youkai, or just an adult longing for the simple, innocent life of a child, warning her child self against growing up too quickly? And is she talking to herself in the past, or is it Maribel Hearn or possibly another child whose future she has already seen happen?

Oh wait, here's the AMV version.

So apparently Yukari is an older Maribel (gasp! shock! who-could-have-seen-that-coming!), and it's Renko she's warning off.

Then again, it shows Ran being older that her.

Alternately alternately, she doesn't want Renko rivalling her. If Maribel went from just seeing boundaries to doing whatever she feels like with them, Tzeentch knows what kind of OP hax instaporting time-travelling space-time-is-my-bitch shenanigans Renko would end up performing.

It's that time of year!

...what time of year? Why, it's the when the results of the 12th Annual Touhou Wiki Popularity Poll are ready! Indeed, the Japanese Touhou-wiki has once again arranged for a grand poll gauging the popularity of characters, music and for the first time individual works. Voting has been open to everyone, and the various English Touhou-communities have been trying to make the Japanese-language poll accessible for moonrune-challenged fans over the world. Participation numbers have never been bigger!

But enough talk, let's get to the juicy bits!

First things first, Reimu Hakurei has retaken the #1 most popular Touhou-character spot! Indeed, last year was a wake-up call for all red-white fans everywhere, and the Shrine Maiden of Paradise got a staggering 3255 first place votes and a total of 15 427 points, leaving second place Marisa Kirisame and third place and last year's winner Koishi Komeiji in the dust.

Now, let's move on to the newcomers! Sagume Kishin, the one-winged Lunarian Goddess with the tongue that invites change, has made a bold introduction at 14th place. Perhaps the LoLK character that got the most attention last year, Clownpiece, however, has to make do with a respectable 23rd. Meanwhile, Divine Spirit and Final Boss Junko has taken 31st, and Welcome to Hell Hecatia Lapislazuli arrives at 43rd.

But talking about newcomers, one should be aware of a big change that has taken place further down the list. Yes, indeed, I'm talking about a newcomer from last year that's climbed all the way up from 100th place to 77th! Who is this mysterious character? Why, it's an unnamed, manga-only, one appearance only, male Fortune Teller!

For those not in the know, he was a mysterious figure who attempted to become a Youkai through peaceful means to enjoy immortal life. Despite his "good" intentions, however, he was mercilessly killed by Reimu Hakurei in an episode that has been much discussed and analyzed by Touhou fans ever since.

And this mysterious figure is now only three spots away from being the most popular male character in Touhou! The boost from last year, I think, can be attributed partly to the fact that manga chapters don't travel as fast within the Western fandom, and also the aforementioned discussions.

But let's talk more about developments. Because while most characters rise and fall a little this year as all years (while some remain mysteriously stationary), some move more than others.

After a great recovery of 10 places last year, Mononobe no Futo has fallen 7 places again to end up in 32nd. The Buddhists do not fare any better, however, as Byakuren Hijiri has taken a dramatic turn and fallen 14 places to 40th. Meanwhile, Shinmyoumaru Sukuna drops 12 to 44th. And, brought to my attention by the administrator of a Touhou Project Facebook fan page, Mamizou Futatsuiwa is no longer in the top 40s. She's not even in the top 50s. She's in 61st!

Ah, but we can't avoid talking about the movements in the absolute bottom.

There was talk just before the poll ended that brought to mind that for the first time, a named Windows-character might drop below placement 100 (...if you don't count Unzan). A rally was started for Kisume, who'd been in 94th and was in a tight spot with 7 newcomers on the ballot. Kisume has survived with a 98th, but some were not so lucky.

It's a hard time to be a musician, apparently. While Lunasa Prismriver is sitting alright in 73rd (down 6 from last year), Lyrica shares 100th with Yatsuhashi Tsukumo and Merlin is in 102nd. And from the side-characters, Watatsuki no Toyohime is now in 103rd (her sister in 88th) and fandom-named Tokiko is in 104th, less than 50 points above the unnamed girl featured on the cover of Dolls in Pseudo Paradise, the first CD of ZUN's Music Collection, who's on the list for the first time.

Now, how about music? Well, U.N. Owen Was Her? is still in 1st, before Septette For a Dead Princess, but Border of Life has retaken 3rd, pushing Hartmann's Youkai Girl down to 4th.

Meanwhile, the Touhou 15 Final Boss Theme, Pure Furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart has made a magnificent start by landing in 10th! Meanwhile, Pierrot of the Star-Spangled Banner, whose boss theme I'm sure you can all guess is, has made 21st.

And last, but certainly not the least! The individual works!

Drumroll, please.

Because! In first place! And first-time winner of the Touhou Wiki Annual Most Popular Work is...Embodiment of Scarlet Devil!

Yes, indeed, a round of applause. Well, considering it's the first Windows-era game and its characters and music are high up on their respective rankings, it wasn't a great surprise. Still, well done!

Imperishable Night takes 2nd and Perfect Cherry Blossom 3rd. Forbidden Scrollery is the highest-ranking manga in 7th place, and Hisoutensoku the highest fighting-game in 10th. Highest music album is Celestial Wizardry ~ Magical Astronomy in 22nd.

All results can be viewed here! Go and check out your favourites!

Let's go to Kishin for her input.

Was there ever an explanation for Koishi's sudden jump?

Which manga is this, by the way?

Lemurian from Touhou fanboy attic Since: Jan, 2001 Relationship Status: Buried in snow, waiting for spring

I think the best explanation for Koishi's boost to first last year was her appearance in Touhou 14.5, Urban Legend in Limbo. Especially her character design for that game was superb. But if we look further back, we see that she made a solid jump from 14th to 3rd in 2014, long before ULiL was released. And if go even further back, we see that she's been steadily climbing the ranks ever since she first appeared in 35th. From there she's gone 35th - 22nd - 15th - 14th - 3rd - 1st and now back to 3rd.

Ah, I forgot to say which manga the Fortune Teller appeared in, sorry. That's Forbidden Scrollery.

EDIT: Speaking of fanart, it's worth noting that while Youmu is still the one in the Scarlet Sandwich (between Remilia and Flandre in character rankings), Sakuya has ended up in an interesting sandwich between the Extra Stage Little Sisters Flandre and Koishi. She doesn't seem to mind.

No. Most likely it's a combination of U Li L and HM.

I noticed a bump in popularity for her following 13.5 at least.

Of all my votes, only Koishi and Satori got the top 10.

I know it hasn't been around as long, but I've yet to find a remix that surpasses the original.

Master, more augmented humans are visiting, they say you have something that belongs to them? Apparently their name's on it, so it should be easy to find.

Inquisitor, we are not declaring her Excommunicatis Ultima and bombing Gensokyo to the Warp and back, it's just a translation error.

Get your facts straight, people! Don't let Big Astronomy poison your head with their lies!

You'd think Remilia would know how to deal with their larger cousins.

Gensokyo's populace has difficulty reaching the devotion expected of His servants.

Ordo Obsoletus: Dedicated to the investigation of unexplained natural phenomena

Ordo Obsoletus, Department of anti-Yuugi, how can I help you?

So I happened to read the Character pages for 40K. According to other tropers, Living Saints are Imperial daemons; Yarrick is dead while the one we know and fear is also a daemon, created by the orks who didn't think the fightiest human they'd ever known could die; and the reason for Kharn being Kharn is that he can't handle the fact that he could have stopped following Khorne. I didn't know you could wear leather pants over ceramite.

Nice, but still prefer the first.

Let's see what 1d4's up to...

Apparently the Mechanicus found some super device that supercharges psykers or something to that effect. Given that its STC is on a Daemon World, one can only assume it will backfire horribly should it somehow get recovered.

So basically, now that Necrons are no longer mindless killbots they need a new way to show the Ad Mech are dumbasses?

Some Techpriests were desperate enough to fix the Golden Throne that they decided to hire some Dark Eldar for tech support.

... As I was saying.

I now expect 8th edition to feature orks fixing the Golden Throne.
