Ahhh.

I have often pondered the possibility of a Those Two Guys dynamic with a Khornate and a Tzeentchian, it could work depending on how faithful the two are. Even considered doing so in Commorragh, though thankfully that didn't happen.

Also from that novel, our Thousand Son turned Black Legionary comes up with a pretty clever way to punish an Emperor's Children marine who was supposed to support his company during the Siege of Terra but took off to go butcher innocents and grab slaves for shits and giggles like the rest of his Legion. Namely, he uses his sorcerous powers to completely rewire the guy's nervous system so that he can't feel pain or pleasure at all, unless the Thousand Son gives him permission to do so.

'bout time they used it, there was a Sigmarite who'd concoted a potion that had the same effect, though he only used it to question heretics.

We're letting them take the lead in everything.

Speaking of Strange Japanese Things: UNDEAD CORPORATION (the persons responsible for this:

this, this, and this) has a website.

Thanks to google translate applied to said site, it is entirely possible that one or more of these is called "Super steel heavy low roar from Gensokyo" or "full moon of the ultra-melodic heavy low roar in the night" and the world is a better place for it.

The Internet has disappointed me. Despite the eye-watering obvious similarities, I simply cannot find any fanart of the white-haired member of the ruling elite with incredible powers over fire, who appears to never grow older than the day they entered a different plane of existence and now spends their time rescuing people from a supernatural forest.

Today's schadenfreude serial:

Had to drop my brother and mother off at the airport this morning, meaning we had to get up at 4. I got back home, was allowed an hour of sleep before I had to get up to take the bus to university. Thanks to a helpful passerby, I learned that there was a bus strike. So I went back home, told my other brother (since he needed to take the bus as well) and took the car to the subway. There we waited as an insultingly chipper canned voice announced that there had been an incident and the subway would not be working for 15 minutes... 10 minutes... 5 minutes... a few minutes... a few minutes... a few minutes... 10 minutes... a few minutes... a few minutes... And then when all hope seemed lost, and the crowd ready to storm the turnstiles, the voice returned to announce that the subway would not work for another 30 minutes (everyone cheered at this point). So we returned to the car and drove to the university (and know that we were surrounded by French drivers, even more of the crazy bastards than usual, and it was raining). And as we arrived we saw the parking lot had one spot open, but were denied the opportunity to seize it and defend it from claimjumpers, as the gates closed. After some increasingly frantic searching for a place to leave the car (I still had class to get to at this point), I received news that my mother had somehow lost her cellphone (she had it for less than a week, the previous one having suffered an ignominious fate involving a toilet, Percussive Maintenance and rice) at the airport, and someone would be required to go get it, regardless of the fact that the professors deemed it necessary to stick mandatory lectures that won't be part of the exams, during pre-exam week and exam week. No really: They shortened one of the exams by an hour to ensure we would go. And to top it all off, my mother has a terrible fear of leaving the car on the subway parking overnight, filled as they are with junkies, vagrants, college students and other undesirables, so I had to bring the car back home and return via bus (who informed me the strike would probably last all week).

I can only hope we've used up our bad luck allotment for the month with all this.

Right, that's out of the way, let's get to the important stuff: Lemurian! Blonde, blue or black?

The schadenfreude saga (schagadenfreude?) continues!

As I said, my mom lost her phone in the airport, so my brother had to go and get it. Except of course the bus strike went on all week, and while some lines were operating on a skeleton service, the airport shuttle was not among them. And since I had class I couldn't drive him there or go myself. So I figured, "Well, they come back this weekend, we'll just get it then!" Poor innocent fool that I was, I would gladly slap the stupid out of him. For as you have no doubt guessed, the lost-and-found is closed on two days of the week. Guess what days those are. Guess.

Oh, and to add insult to injury, today I got hung up on.

By a telemarketer.

A telemarketer.

Yes indeed, it is a sad day in a man's life when a creature that shares the same social status as shippers, lawyers and Texans believes you so worthless, so contemptible, so ignoble and inherently repulsive that phone etiquette need not be wasted on the likes of you.

Discussion topic of the day: Miracle Mallet used on long-lost daemon weapon. What happens?

Depends on wish. And strength of daemon weapon.

Although, if it's like Fulgrim's Laer sword and the wish was an excorcism then I'd say it should work pretty fine. Shinmyoumaru's going to be the size of a mouse for a while but hey, Reimu has a nice box that the kobito's converted into a house already.

I'm just postulating though.

More in the making tsukumogami sense. Does it release the daemon, does it give the daemon a roommate...

Well, tsukumogami don't usually manifest. The miracle mallet made a few, but that was apparently an unintended side effect of... something.

Keep in mind that in shinto all tools(barring electronic appliances I believe) have the potential to manifest one, since pretty much everything has a soul/spirit/kami.

Now, if you treat the tool properly and maintain it and dispose of it in the end in a proper fashion, a tsukumogami will never manifest, cause that soul's gonna be perfectly content as it is.

With daemon weapons... well, I suppose something odd could happen. But the miracle mallet is unpredictable. The side effects seem to be pretty random. Giant upside down castle, making youkai aggressive etc etc.

So a bloodletter suddenly dedicating its time to the joys of poetry could happen I suppose, since the mallet is a jerkass and that would be a jerk move against Khorne.

Well, what I had in mind was simply a revised form of the DDC-plot, just instead of everyone getting riled up and aggressive, everyone would instead be unusually calmed down and peaceful.

Other than that, what Jørgen says is the baseline: if it's not subject to a wish, the effects of the Miracle Mallet are unpredictable, and what decides if an item is chosen to go down the path of tsukumogamihood is unknown.

Okay. But what if it does get one? Is it possible to have a sword that wields (and argues with) itself?

And would the Gensokyans object to scientific study? As in, the Mechanicus keep trying wishes, upscaling weapons, inducing aggressiveness/lethargy in troops, touching inanimate objects with the mallet... then write down the results.

There is no problem in it wielding itself. That is thus far the main rule as tsukumogami go (Kogasa and her umbrella, Benben and Yatsuhashi and their instruments, etc.). I suppose if the sword remains sentient while getting an "external" personality in the tsukumogami, it could also end up having conversations with itself.

As for scientific study, well, that would be up to Shinmyoumaru, who's not been claimed by a player yet. But since the Mallet is a treasured artifact of the kobito and only kobito can use it, she might need some persuasion.

As in, the tsukumogami arguing with the bound daemon in the sword as to what the best course of action to take, like hunting isolated travellers vs. maimslaughterkilling thousands.

What would it take to get her to do it?

Indeed. Also, the tsukumogami might be more "practically" oriented while the daemon is more idealistic.

Well, it'll depend on who plays her, especially since she doesn't have a lot of canon to build on thus far. She's somewhat childish, and easily believes Seija's lies. But if I played her, I think some flattery, bribery and the occasional simplification would be enough.

[up][up][up] I'll take Miss Sukuna if no one minds then? Please? smile

Anyhow, since tsukumogami are essentially the tool made manifest, I don't see why they'd talk with themselves. Kogasa is the umbrella, Benben is the biwa, Yatsuhashi is the koto. The bodies they manifest aren't really important. They're pretty much a tool of the ... tool.

Why would such a thing even manifest a tsukumogami though? Youkai are weak to possession. It flat out kills them, more or less.

I don't mind. But then I want Seija.

And in this case, it's special. The daemon that inhibits the sword is not a spirit of the sword, but is a separate entity that just so happens to be bound to the sword. At least, that's how I understand it. Therefore, the sword's physical form houses its own innate spirit in the shinto sense that can evolve into a tsukumogami.

Well, not really. Possession in general works like that. Kozusu gets possessed by a vengeful spirit in FS at one point. The vengeful spirit was still a seperate entity within her.

The difference here, using the sword example, is that it's not a body but a weapon. Otherwise it's pretty much the same thing.

So you're saying that having a daemon bound to the sword extinguishes the existence of a youkai-like spirit that otherwise inhabits the sword?

Not neccesarily. We're not actually given a canon example of a youkai being possessed. What we know is that it kills that youkai.

Since Byakuren, Miko and Kanako seem to agree that it simultaneously creates a new youkai in a sense, you might get the case of a daemon sword manifesting a tsukumogami that is more or less the daemon in personality.

Or it's as you say and it is extinguished.

Seeing as daemons are Outside Context Villains for Gensokyo, maybe they don't have to follow the rules regarding possession. So maybe they could (grudgingly) coexist, while binding a daemon to a tsukumogami'ed weapon results in a slow takeover rather than outright death.

Imagine she finds a way to exorcise the daemon from the weapon. Gensokyo becomes a hub for Inquisitorial disposal until they're flying in Titans and ST Cs to be decorrupted.

Lemurian from Touhou fanboy attic Since: Jan, 2001 Relationship Status: Buried in snow, waiting for spring
#40900: Apr 7th 2015 at 2:23:24 AM

But the thing here is that it's not the Youkai that is possessed, it's the physical item that is the sword. And canon says possession kills youkai.

Then, the question becomes: when does the youkai of the item manifest? Is it from the start, that is to say, as the potential for becoming a tsukumogami? In that case, it can become extinguished during possession or the daemon "takes over" the place of that potential tsukumogami.

However, if the tsukumogami seed, the spirit that is the sword itself, is not lost during the initial possession, then I don't think the possession in ages past completely excludes the possibility of developing a tsukumogami later on. However, the daemon may influence it in a manner of ways.
