Anyway: If your going to have an interstellar empire you need FTL travel if you plan on using the home world for recruits. My guess is they slip out of their frog into paradox space proper where physics is a dirty word and then back inside. Very WH 40 K.

So yeah, the empire could be intergalactic, and remember that the matriorb came from a dead virgin grub. It's possible that the Alternian breeding caverns were deep enough for the orb to have survived, or at least one of the mothergrubs.

Plus any spacefaring species would know better than to put all of their eggs in one basket. Even if the other gruball other grubs were in range, their orbs would still be viable.
