Automated Wick Checking: Doable?

My idea is to have a tool that, at the click of a button, does the following:

  • Parses wicks on the "Related To" page, following each one.
  • For every instance of a link to the page, grabs the context (the paragraph or bullet in which it appears) and
  • Appends it to a report page (either one that can be linked to, or pasted easily into a forum thread).

This would take much of the work out of wick checking, leaving only the need to read the results and interpret them. It could also be a precursor toward eventual automatic link replacement for easier renaming of tropes.

We used to have an automatic text replacer for easier renaming of tropes. First, some chucklehead abusing it forced Fast Eddie to make it only available to admins. Then the increasing size and edit activity of the wiki made it impractical for even the admins to use.

I didn't write any of that.

Elle isn't proposing something to replace text, though - just essentially using the current Related To tool and expanding it slightly so instead of just reporting the page the article appears on, it also reports the paragraph/bullet it appears in.

Bump. I figure with the design updates and new programmers, it's a good time to revive this thread.

What I'm picturing is a tool where you put in a trope name and a number (50 is standard minimum) and it looks for 50 random wicks with that name linked, then provides the entire line in a plaintext report (with the page it was found on listed), which you can then peruse at your leisure for misuse or potholes or whatever. Is that something that's possible?

I do think this is technically feasible, as a script that extracts material from a Related To page.

This has been suggested in Query Wishlist; locking.
