Anyone know how this picture communicates the trope?

Answer: It doesn't. The caption does all the explaining.

How about the Crashing Moon from The Legend Of Zelda Majoras Mask?

So, something like this or this?

EDIT: Might be just a moon and a caption, but I had to try this out.

Hm...The Moon is a great example, but there's nothing about it that says the player has failed. That exact scene (well, almost) can play out with the player successfully summoning the Giants.

No it will only play if you don't have four of the Giants.

It starts out the same if you have the four giants actually. They just catch it before it actually hits.

Not by much, especially with having to be resized.

I note a number of examples are of creative Game Over screens, and there's a bit of overlap with Nonstandard Game Over in that many examples get themselves over pretty quckly. Nothing as long and as drawn-out as the title implies it to be.

^Resizing isn't an issue. The first still I posted is of the exact same scene and is only 320 pixels wide.

Though, I'm noticing Jabo's 1.6 doesn't seem to be getting the moon's flame trail right. How interesting.

I don't know if the Chrono Trigger imagem was added after this thread was made, but it works great, and I say stick with it.

Except...it's also being used on You Can't Fight Fate, and if we had to pick one, I'd say keep it on the latter.

I'd then say go with the moon from Majoras Mask, buuuutttt it itself is being used on Nonstandard Game Over.

The Chrono Trigger one relies on familiarity with the game to make sense to the five people who haven't played it (one of them being me). The Majoras Mask is little better.

Maybe the game over screen from Zelda II The Adventure Of Link that says "Ganon's Return".

No, that's the game's standard Game Over screen. And you wouldn't understand the "return of Ganon" part without reading the instruction manual.

I honestly think it's a bad image for both of them.

Bump...the duplicate pics still need to be resolved. For You Can't Fight Fate, since it's listed as an example, how about panels 7, and 8 of this Bob And George strip, coupled with either panel 5 or 6?

The problem with imaging this seems to be it would be VERY hard to understand without context. Take the image posted in the thread for example. I have never played any gmaes in that series, so I don't know what's goinbg on.

I'm a little lost for 2 reasons: 1) It appears someone has already dropped a new picture on there. 2) How is this trope different from Have a Nice Death? I may have to drop this one into the TRS, since the description and examples don't seem to match.

Have a Nice Death, as its tone of voice implies, tends to be more sarcastic (sometimes even Played for Laughs, say, if the cause of death was obvious Shmuck Bait) while It's a Wonderful Failure is played for drama. But yeah, TRS may be needed here.

Are we okay with the picture that got added while the thread was open?

No, I think that's a duplicate with another page, possibly You Can't Fight Fate.

EDIT: Yep...and I think we either have a thread on that very issue or had it resolved, I can't remember right now.

From the trope page, maybe the ending from Red Zone? 1 It's dark and pretty much spoiler-safe (since it's from a quite old helicopter Genesis game, I doubt someone would care)
