I think it would have died off after the Toguro arc. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd still like it, but just like with Jojo I think the manga had to evolve around that point. Of course it'd be better to hear the author's take on it's development, see what he thought.

Battle manga were and still are stupidly popular. Even sticking to that formula, Yu Yu is far less recognized than Dragonball is - not unpopular, but certainly not as popular - and I think that's because Dragonball had it's audience strapped in for "laughs and crazy martial arts humor" from the start.

i do wonder what it would've been like for the story to continue the "spirit detective" angle.

If you haven't read the manga, I'd suggest it. They spend way more time on the Spirit Detective stuff.

The anime raced through that part at a frantic pace, cutting out nearly all of it, so they could get to the fighting as quick as they could.

EDIT: Wait, no, I'm confusing the Spirit Detective part with the Ghost Yusuke part. Ignore me.

Yeah, I have the manga for the early ghost stories. Like the time he threatened to send a dog to hell to help a kid cope with grief, or when he tried to fight a curse and wound up in orbit.

Not just a curse, a curse from a little girl if I recall.

Fortunately for him, she wasn't able to do it a second time.

As much as I completely adore the YYH anime, there are three things I'll always be bugged they did with the adaptation: cut out the extraneous Spirit Detective and "Yusuke as a wandering spirit" stories, turn Keiko into even more of the Chick whereas in the manga she was more tough and proactive, and cutting out Yusuke's mother from the later arcs.

The little girl spirit was in the anime, iirc, but she was more or less a different character.

Yeah. In the manga, she was rewritten as an auditor sent to assess Yusuke's progress on the Spirit egg thing.

You mean the anime. The manga had her as the ghost of a dead little girl who wanted to drag a little boy into the afterlife to play with her forever.

Wha? But this doesn't even make sense. This web series was around for almost a decade without any trouble. What made Toei suddenly decide that it was a problem?

Why do I have all feeling it was because they said Dragon Ball Super in the intro to the cell games when it's currently airing still....

I'd be cautious about attributing motivations to Toei as though it were a single entity taking carefully calculated actions with a single purpose, acting with perfect awareness of all available information.

Toei Animation is a large organization made up of numerous individuals of varying levels of competence, the vast majority of whom are on the other side of a vast ocean and an equally vast language and cultural gap.

The most likely explanation is that some salaryman in middle management just got a promotion or transfer that gave him access to the You Tube copyright claims system for the first time and started pushing buttons.

It's an annoyance, but it will blow over. Just like last time. And the time before that. And so on.

If there's a reason to blame Toei for our discontent then we must take it.

IIRC, can't people who aren't part of the company also report copyright infringement in YouTube's system? I think the possibility exists that it's just some butthurt Dragon Ball fan with a grudge.

I think after finding out that Funimation did something with them, now Toei actually wants TFS literally, physically, medically, biologically dead.

Apparently Toei directly intervened to get that scene with the cast cut from the broadcast.

This is just hearsay and speculation, but. I think and feel like we've gone from "annoyance" to "active malice and contempt".

I dunno.

I can only guess that in their view, TFS are just criminals, and Funi shouldn't be rewarding them.

It's weird because Japan has a thriving doujinshi market so you'd think Toei would chill out on the parody series.

Like, I fail to see how TFS is more of a desecration of their IP than actual porn being sold in stores.

[up] I think it's a matter of, the people who made the dojunshi actually drew the work, while TFS just took the original footage with some edits, and according to some research, it ironically, falls under parody. https://www.tofugu.com/japan/doujinshi-definition/

...Yeah, that's a point. It's Toei's footage.

Toei's often shitty footage, that Kaiser is only able to salvage and fix with what I can only assume to be magic.

Excellently-crafted parting shot. 8 points.

Re: "cell games" footage. It is a little disappointing that it wasn't used in the broadcast (after it was used involving the Toonami promo for Kai Final, amusingly enough), but I guess I can understand why they'd choose not to use it. Even for a silly scene like that, I think the jokes were too memey. I'd have enjoyed just throwing out a "mondo cool", but it seemed like half the jokes were like that. Which is good for an injoke-y video, but not as good in the official release.

And now I'm wondering what that video will be like when DBZA reaches the Buu saga itself.
