You want at least a few hundred in profit for the traders. I often jack that up to 1,000 in profit and it usually does the trick. A few times I've run into hucksters who I feel cheated me more than they should have, but . . .
If you're not concerned for future caravans, you can always Seize goods from non-dwarf caravans.
or construct a magma trap over your trade depot for the elves
not that i've ever done that or anything..................................................................
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterAlso, I haven't actually encountered any goblins whatsoever. There are some kobolds around, though, and at least a couple of them have died and dropped stuff. They seem to carry silver daggers and a few articles of clothing.
Join my forum game!i buy metal toys and instruments and crafts from traders so i can melt them down into bars
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Twitter@Choobeh: Never did find myself doing that. Then again, it probably doesn't help that at my latest fort, my commodities are pretty much wood crafts, toys, insturments, and the such.
I will dread the day that Toady makes metal absolutely finite. (Already, Adamantine is one such scarce metal.)

"If you have any beefs with Santa, do remember to SETTLE IT IN SMASH!" Quote by Edveeddat feeling when im digging a large space for farming and that very last tile is made of rock instead of soil/clay/sand
my design!! ;___; gotta find a way to get a small amount of water there...
@Tarsen: I know that feeling all too well there. It's rather... aggravating.
Also looks like 0.40.12 was released a bit ago, and I am pleased to see no more job cancellations due to birthing a child. That should keep things rolling.
Also, is it me, or whenever I embark on a site without an aquifer, I always have just silt, peat, and other useless soils? (In other words, not black/red/normal sand and not clay/fire clay. Those kinds of soil that when you go to designate an area to collect such materials, you'd get a reading of 0 elgible tiles.)
"If you have any beefs with Santa, do remember to SETTLE IT IN SMASH!" Quote by EdveedSo I'm making my third attempt at learning to play Dwarf Fortress (the lazy newb pack is awesome btw), and I've just run into the same problem that I did in all my previous attempts, at some point in the game, my dwarfs just stop doing their jobs. When I build stuff, it doesn't register stone in the available materials. They won't build, they won't butcher, they won't tan hides. Anybody have some idea of what's going on?

Double check to make sure the appropriate labours are enabled.
Yeah, the labors are good. I even went so far as to uncheck everything except what I want them to do. Then they just go on "no job."
What kind of stone is it?
Wait, that only would fix some of the problems. Hm, I don't know.

Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.Dammit, it happened again on a new game! I don't get it, all the setting look right as far as I can tell.
Have you asked on the Bay12 fora? You'd probably get a better answer there than here.
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.I figured I should ask on the forums I've already got an account on. Bay12 seemed kind of dead anyway.
It's not dead, just somewhat slow. We're gearing up for another update with a new feature, so people are probably waiting for that to come out rather than continuing to talk about the old stuff.
Ok, I made an account to post on there.
In other news, it turns out that my issue with the stockpiles isn't (probably) that, but an issue with the pathfinding. For some reason, my dwarfs stop being able to enter or exit the fort, even though the only things in their way are stairs and some doors which aren't forbidden.
Edit: Nope, there's still more to it. My dwarfs stuck outside won't build the workshops they need to stay fed.

Something to do with burrows, maybe?
I don't think so, I've never even touched burrows, and a little playing around with it now isn't turning anything up.

And you had this problem with an earlier version of the game too?
ETA: If you're still using the same computer you used to, try installing it on another computer or a portable hard drive. The game is not light or nice on memory, and if your computer has a bottleneck there, maybe the actual jobs are getting skipped to conserve memory.

That's the thing, it's a different computer—and a pretty nice one at that— and a different version of the game, which is why I have to think that it's a gameplay issue on my end. At first, I suspected I was doing something that made my dwarfs so unhappy they don't want to work, but when I check they're always content or higher, until they begin starving, or I flood the fortress. That doesn't explain why they can't use the items in my stockpiles either. When I try to build stuff, the game is acting like those items aren't accessible even when there's a perfectly clear path.
Edit: I'm still trying to figure out how I want to post this on bay12. It's hard to explain because I don't really know what's going on besides "Everything's not working, help!"

Use k to see what's up with them? If there's a bright blue TSK next to them, they've been tasked for something already.
You could upload a save or a video to let others look into it better if nothing else works.
I think I'll have to do that. I tried digging another stairway to the surface to see if that cleared things up (stone is available for building walls inside my fortress, but not outside, and my dwarfs don't seem to want to come in or out) and that didn't resolve the issue. How do I go about uploading a save?

All you Beigeknife and Jawmetal fans remember how Viha kept dying? Well here's someone who has figured out how to clone the dead back to life and use their corpses to make gear.
