I am thinking he has finally hit a point where it needs to be optimized or it will be difficult for it to be long term playable. Many of the new features rely some long term play.
Who watches the watchmen?Got the latest version. Starting a game in an area I randomly chose parameters for. I don't even remember what those were ultimately, like a frozen coastal area.
All hail Cultportals, new home of Visioncrazy the Cat of Cats. It's not a cult so much as a maniacal group of fanatical blade-wielding zealots. All my dwarves have a single proficient skill thanks to advanced brainwashing.
In this House of Cats, only Cats may Cat. They worship Cats by eating Cats and breeding Cats. I hope they remember what order...

"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Better yet. I'm going to carve it out of the frozen ocean. There are no possible negative consequences from this.

This is a signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine."Magma furnace"? What does that have to do with the Holy Cat? You're crazy, you need religion my religion come get a Cat you need a Cat love the Cat Cats love—things, maybe even you.

There are no negative consequences to the Cat of Cats building a castle of ice. Bonus points if it brings Magma Furnaces to the surface and melts . . .
Ice blocks don't melt.
Natural ice does, and if he carves be castle out of natural ice...
This is a signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.I did say ice blocks.
I think you should make a catstle catst from obskittyan
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterPump kittens into a casting chamber and encase them in obsidian. Use that encapsulated obskittytan to build your fort.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"*encatspulated
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterThat is in fact what I typed and autocorrect changed it without me noticing q_q
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Just to break up the caterwauling, here's some update news:
Toady has fixed several bugs. He's slowed down sapling and tree growth so it doesn't run amok. He's finally fixed the issue where builders stand on their own build site and block themselves. He's also fixed the phantom crutch exploit people used for so long in Adventure mode.
Update note here: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
I noticed the construction-builders issue. That bugged the crap out of me when I was making fortifications.
Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.@Changelog: I noticed the builders sitting on their own site anomaly being smashed at last! Yes! I'm curious about the wafers using the proper amount of wafers now... wonder if it means one wafer is equal to one bar now.
"If you have any beefs with Santa, do remember to SETTLE IT IN SMASH!" Quote by EdveedWhen the next release comes out, go for the Science on that. Assuming Toady doesn't just tell us in the changelog.

This is a great thread. Especially the long post that ends with kill and casualty counts. It reads like a Dwarfy synopsis of a certain recent movie.
The good news is, I am not dead. I just have very few reasons to point myself Tropesward these days. It turns out a DF update (particularly now that I have had enough time free of the dread workbeast to play with it) is one of those few.
Has anyone figured out how to get the new crops to work? I have more than a few "grape plant" items, but none of the usual processing options seem to function. Leeks, celery, quinoa, and cabbages have all worked for me so far, but grapes and most berries are beyond my grasp.

Not nearly a good enough singer for the Choir Invisible, and the Basement Room With A Synth Invisible is much less prestigious. They're currently bugged. I'm pretty sure any vegetable that is an entire plant is okay (Stuff like potatoes, onions, leeks, that sort of thing) but anything that grows on a vine or in a tree currently won't work.
A few more bugs have been knocked out and we should see another release tomorrow. I'm probably going to try (And fail) to wait until the end of the stabilizing cycle before downloading anymore.
40.05 is out and I found this lovely little gem at the bottom of the changelog:
"•Re-added elven diplomacy, though it is still unchanged from its first incarnation"
That's right, the Elves can finally talk to us again. Woohoo!
Isn't elven diplomacy more about them telling you that you can't chop trees?
For now, probably. But it's progress!
Okay Toady's started Optimizing already. He managed to cut the calendar update time on Fort mode from 23 seconds down to 10, and on Adventure mode from two minutes down to 11 seconds. So we're making a little progress. It didn't do too much for game speed yet, and he's moving onto bug fixes today, but we are making progress.
