To be fair, the only dragon-ish guys besides Charizard are Bowser, Yoshi, and Bowser Jr.

Random rambling, regarding heroines.

It's such a shame that Leaf can never appear in the anime. I rather liked her design, simple and cute.

Also, I'm starting to play Pokémon Platinum and when the game asked my character's gender, I immediately picked female. Before Serena came along, Dawn was my favorite pokemon girl and even now it's a very close behind.

The 20th pokemon movie would have been a good time to use Leaf because it was a re-telling of Kanto and she is a Kanto character. But instead they created that new girl with the Piplup.

Hilda and Rosa never appeared in the main anime either, and Hilda's design especially is very popular in the games/manga and fanart. I'm really surprised the anime didn't give Hilda any type of appearance at all, even if Iris was still a main character.

I still don't get why Meowth was never made playable in Smash Bros. The series' death animation made it too good to be true.

Concerning writers, at least two of the main writers this series (including the lead) have been writing since Hoenn. In fact one has been writing since the anime first started.

Huh, that's...really interesting. They're really focusing on the plotline of those three huh.

Well now that Ash doesn't have a traditional travel group, it's easy to exclude characters. In every other saga he's always traveling with his friends, so you can't very well have a character disappear for an episode randomly. For most DP episodes especially you could have axed Brock from them and 90% of the episode would have played out exactly the same.

It's a good way to prevent the travel groups from getting as stale as they did from about Johto onward. So many episodes where Ash's companions generally did nothing but stand in the background, but there was no way to exclude them from the episodes.

This week's episode also began with a diary entry from Lillie, so I guess this is going to be a regular thing now, she's the new narrator.

It's probably only going to be for this batch of episodes that focus on Lusamine or Aether. After it ends there's no reason to have her continue to narrate. When Ash battles the last two Kahuna's for example.

For the last couple of sagas the main girl always gets an increased amount of screentime during their arc when it comes into focus, and then after it ends their focus drops and they become supporting characters again.

[up][up][up]Depends on how much development Lillie gets and how relevant she is. She keeps bonding significantly with Ash for example, and of course they'll have her exposition about his quest in her own cute way, Amourshippers be damned.

It's kind of funny how quickly the Misty/Brock cameo eps just flew by. I mean I enjoyed the eps, but now that the anime is moving on with Lusamine/Aether plot it almost feels like they never came back at all, lol.

Old character cameos felt like a bigger deal when Misty appeared in AG or May in DP, but nowadays it doesn't feel important anymore, besides fans who may want to see an old character again. I think it's probably because now the anime is 20 years old, most of the original fans have either moved on from the anime or don't care anymore, and now that we have 8 female companions in the show it's hard for them to gain huge fanbases anymore like the older ones used to. Especially since far less people watch the anime now than a decade ago, and the female leads have shorter runs on the show than ever before.

...Or because when Misty and May came back before, they arcs dedicated to it while Misty and Brock were kind of one offs lol.

With the upcoming 1000th episode, we've got some new clearfiles coming out.

This one is of Ash and all of his regional companions (minus Brock for Gens 3 and 4 because it'd look silly to have Brock on there three times. Though it makes Dawn look like the only companion he had in Sinnoh, which might as well have been true considering how little Brock did)

It's hard to believe we're really at the 1,000th episode. I remember a decade ago when people thought 300-500 episodes was "a lot" and now we're at double that.

Absolutely crazy.

And here I am, still wanting to know, "By what count is the Lillie & Silvally episode #1,000?" Even according to Serebii, it's only #992. Now, you could say that the Mega Evolution Specials count as main-series, and you can probably put the XYZ Special and maybe the Clemont & Cilan special there due to when they aired. But that still leaves the count 2 short. (And, yes, Serebii counted the unaired Plasma 2-parter and all banned episodes, though, as alluded to in my prior statement, not the Mega Evolution series nor the Postscript Specials.)

Actually, I think that I may have found them: The 1997 Fall Special and New Year's Day, 1999. Neither Serebii nor Bulbapedia numbered those episodes, and Serebii doesn't even show them in their lineup. But both sites did list (and count) the Hoenn and Sinnoh Clip Shows; if those Clip Shows counted, why not the Kanto ones?

[up] 276 (OS) + 192 (AG, not Chronicles) + 193 (DP) + 144 (BW, no Plasma specials) + 146 (XY + Mega Evo specials) + 49 (SM) = 1000

Somebody may want check the math at the official website, then. Here's how they break the sagas down:

Here, they stop numbering episodes, so I had to count myself:

  • Sinnoh: 191
  • Unova+Decolora: 146 (Includes the DP CurtainCalls plus Cilan's, but it also includes "Pikachu's Strange Wonder Adventure", a short previously aired on ANA airline flights.note  It does not include the unaired 2-parter)
  • Kalos: 149 entries are listed, but the list breaks The Cosplay Pikachu Special into 3 slots, even though the actual episode had 4 titles; the list pushed parts 3 & 4 together. So that one is either 147 or 150. (Also includes Iris and Clemont's Curtain Calls, the Mega Evolution Specials, and the XY&Z Special)

So, given that the Lillie & Silvally episode is tagged as SM049, and we don't have a Serena special on the docket prior to that, that means that the first SM episode should be EP952 leading to 951 episodes prior.

Yet, by the Japanese count, Clemont's Curtain Call is either Episode 947 if the Cosplay Pikachu Film Episodes are all together... or 950 if counted separately.

The Japanese Count is 1 Episode Short of the 1,000 mark! (Or 4 if the Cosplay Pikachu Film episodes are combined.)

Then again, the Japanese Count does not include "Electric Soldier Porygon", "Holiday Hi-jynx", "Snow Way Out", "Princess vs Princess", or "The Purrfect Hero".

I had a long post about how Bulbapedia and Serebii needing to renumber their episodes that got wiped by an errant window closure. The short form is that I came up with 2 rules for an episode to count in the count:

  1. It has to air at the normal airdate (Tuesdays up to and including "Electric Soldier Porygon", Thursdays thereafter)
  2. It has to be a standard half-hour

In this way, the count can be 1,000 with the listed episode by:

  • counting all 5 unlisted Kanto episodesnote
  • excluding "Pikachu's Strange Wonder Adventure"note
  • combining the Cosplay Pikachu shorts into 1 Episodenote

This is probably what you did, Zoroark, you just placed the Curtain Calls with the series they were closing, as opposed to when they aired.

Now the question becomes how to order the Out of Order episodes and where the Curtain Calls actually go, but that's a matter for another post... maybe.

@precita: Well a quick limelight episode is better than the big fat nothing they got for ages.

Also Word of God is they are considering cramming in a few more region episodes this series.

Really?

So we might see the return of some of Ash's other companions...barring Tracey, who was nowhere to be seen during the Kanto reunion, which makes sense since he has nothing to do with Kanto, but it really hammers home how irrelevant he was.

Depends I suppose, we are reaching the big arcs after all.

I would be interested in seeing Ash's interactions with past companions as they progressed regions. Misty and Brock mostly made jabs at his rookie days in Kanto (though with Brock remembering some of his later prowess). I can see the Alola students being left stunned by what the Kalos team would say about him.

I don't really think we'll get any other old character cameos, the writers will still have to finish adapting the rest of SM's story, characters or pokemon. Bar a small chance for Serena only because she was the last-gen girl, but if you mean other characters who have been gone for years I don't see it.

Just watched 46.

I have to acknowledge that my disdain for Team Rocket is somewhat hypocritical when Ash isn't much different: an idiot doing the same thing over and over again and ultimately failing.

Then again, they all should have left the field a long time ago. Team Rocket only exist to follow him around, and Ash is kept around because the people running the show refuse to retire him under any circumstances, and insist he must neve accomplish his goal. I suppose my annoyance with them stems from the fact that they actively choose to follow the kid around and try and steal from him 90% of the time, and had to be in every episode even when their presence was totally pointless (and I blame Shudo for making this a part of the show in the first place, and the writers who followed him for continuing it).

Getting to the ep, it sounds like Lillie being able to touch pokemon will be key to regaining her memories. Since the story seems to be leaning more towards Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (which I know little about, and I know even less about Sun and Moon since I haven't played either yet), things will get interesting how events go down.
