Whenever people bring up Kubo's brand of comedy or slice of life, they usually don't think it's funny. Maybe because it just doesn't have the same vibe as in something like, One Piece.
Which is a bit ironic to me, as for the most part, Oda's brand of comedy and wackiness aren't really to my taste.
Humor is a very subjective thing. One reason why I like One Piece is cause its one of the few manga that gets me to laugh out loud & cause my sides to split. Doesn't mean I don't think Bleach is funny though, it has gotten laughs outta me.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I know it's subjective, I'm just saying that most people I hear mention it here don't like it.
To each his own, its not much of an issue really. You either like it or don't. No problem there.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Abridged!Cell saying "Ominous!" needs to be a Forum Weapon clip.
The sad, REAL American dichotomy@ Saiga: I will admit I enjoyed the Kyros/Scarlett flashback but it's obviously undercut somewhat by Kyros's "ME BIG STRONG MAN; MUST PROTECT WIMMENZ" personality.
That feels out-of-nowhere.

It's in response to a post last page about Oda's romance writing skills or lack thereof.
Scarlett came off as a huge brat for most of that flashback. Which might be understandable seeing as she was 16 and a princess, even if her heart was in the right place. Still, maybe because of the rushed nature of things she just comes off as sort of bitchy.
In general I think Kubo's the best of the three at "normal" people, so I would like to see his take on a love story.
Beyond one or both partners dying, I presume?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Hopefully.
He does have a knack for tragic family back stories.... but I suppose that's a shonen staple anyway.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Plus his take on women in relationships isn't "protected by her man" (Oda) or "subservient to her man" (Kishi) but "helps her man fight horrible abominations and shoots them in the head" so that gives me some confidence.
By the end of Naruto the only one of those that still resonated well with me is Gaara's. Even Naruto's lost a lot of kick with how things turned out.
Gaara's backstory turned into garbage the moment the story tried to act like his parents loved him all along. "I love you so much that I'm going to name you Demon Who Loves Only Himself <3"
You realise that Kubo's probably doing the 'loved you all long' thing with Ryuken and Uryu? Kinda like the Byakuya and Rukia back story?

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Except it was never really implied that Ryuuken hated Uryu to begin with. Like, talk aside, you could always tell there was more going on there.
Well, I never said it went undamaged, just that he's the only one with a sad backstory I can still feel bad for.
^^ Yeah, but the story never acted like Ryuken hates Uryu. If anything, it's quite the opposite. It's also not a really critical part of Uryu's backstory that he doesn't like his dad.
I liked seeing the teamwork to bring down the giant guy who's name i can't even remember anymore.
Hitsugaya's maturity helped grow a theory of mine that age is only a state of mind for Soul Society citizens. They grow when they're ready and not before.
It's something I've noticed elsewhere. Because Uryu got all these ideas in his head about Ryuken, some places take it gospel - despite the evidence that Uryu's just being clueless and the fact that Kubo likes to have his characters turn out to be wrong about stuff.
@Arha. I think it might be. Ryuken seems to want Uryu to think the worst about him. It's probably got something to do with why Uryu survived Auswahlen and what Yhwach really wants with Uryu (which it looks like even Haschwalth doesn't know). Ryuken's having to hide something and being estranged from Uryu is helping to protect Uryu.
Or something - that's usually how these things go anyway. Last Quincy probably means 'Last Quincy protector of the human world' and Ryuken's being held back for the invasion of the human world.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I feel like Ryuken knows exactly what's going on and that's at least part of why he's distant from his son; he doesn't want him taking up the, errm, family business because he's perfectly aware who's pulling the wires.
I always interpreted Ryuuken's lack of enthusiasm about the whole Quincy thing as 'running around fighting dangerous battles against supernatural foes doesn't sound like the sort of thing a responsible parent would do or encourage his son to do. It certainly doesn't pay the bills. And also there was that whole thing where we destabilized reality and were genocided in retaliation. I don't want to contribute to making that happen again.'
Yhwach's presence just gives him an additional reason to not like the whole business.
Kubo could probably handle comedy, slice of life or romance pretty well. He might actually do better with those than shounen fighting manga since one of his biggest issues is the week to week pacing, which doesn't matter so much for those types of stories.
