I think it would have been nice to have some breather arcs that took place in the human world in-between the big time arcs that took place in Soul Society; as it stands, Bleach just keeps escalating after Soul Society and only really slowed down in the Fullbring Arc, only to escalate once again because its the final arc.
I don't necessarily think the pre-SS time was better, but I did like how small scale things were. It really was a simpler time and I did like Ichigo and Rukia's dynamic.

It's probably a nod to the 12 Divine Generals and their leader, Tamonten, the God of War who is as bright as the burning sun. Later on, the Medicine Buddha is in charge of them.

I think the Digimon inspiration came from the Hindu Gods. The shinigami are probably more inspired by the Japanese versions.

Divisions exist for the sake of management. More divisions give the sense of a need for greater management, even if that's not necessarily true.
