Any comments on things other than the pagequote, or should I go ahead and launch the new pages?

Obviously this is going forward no matter what I say, since the crowner is so lopsided. But I see absolutely no use to an Awesome Yet Practical page that is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. This is really just a trope rename, one that we haven't assessed in a while whether the trope use has improved throughout the wiki.

I just think that after all this effort to reorganize, rename and redefine that give it 6 months and things will either be the same or worse.

I got here from Square Peg Round Trope. "In retrospect, this was probably inevitable with Awesome Yet Practical, which frequently receives examples that are awesome yet practical. Its initial purpose was to be a counterpart to What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome?, describing cases where that trope should have applied but the thing in question was somehow awesome anyway."

So It was supposed to be something that should have been awesome. I'm saying laser gun. That thing was portrayed practically. The gun is used to carve things. That thing is viewed as awesome anyway. The thing the gun carves is awesome, so the gun becomes awesome.

The other idea was that an item was so awesome people thought it couldn't really do anything else.

Hm. Yes, I'm confused.

Mostly because the Square Peg Round Trope entry is confusing. What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome? is about works that try (and fail) to make mundane activities look awesome by adding dramatic, epic fanfare. The Square Peg Round Trope entry claims that Awesome Yet Practical was meant to be a counterpart to this; presumably they mean when the dramatic, epic fanfare actually works and does make something mundane look awesome. I have no idea why Square Peg Round Trope makes that claim, but if it ever was that, it's certainly not that now.

Incidentally, I updated the Sandbox.Simple Yet Awesome and Sandbox.Awesome Yet Practical with the new examples that have been added since this thread went idle (the ones that didn't obviously go in one or the other I left out — they'll get re-added to the appropriate page by people more familiar with them). Consensus was definitely on making the transition before — anyone have any objections now?

Very obvious crowner consensus here, why was this thread left lingering?

Sandbox pages are still up, waiting for commentary. I didn't want to make a fairly large change like this without some consensus. Maybe we should clock the thread?

So, is there any consensus on anything, or is this stale?

Looks like we're good. I'll go ahead and swap the sandbox pages in to the main namespace, but I'll need some help sorting wicks.

Edit: pages made and sandbox pages cutlisted. Not sure what indexes Simple, yet Awesome belongs in, though, and there's a whole lot of Awesome Yet Practical wicks to comb through and see if they need to be pointed to Simple, yet Awesome instead.

I always wondered what the point of this trope was. Maybe it should be renamed "Simple but effective?"

It is, someone just needs to do the sorting of the examples. We've got both Awesome Yet Practical and Simple, yet Awesome.

The examples have been sorted, but I don't believe the wicks have. I'll try to get started on that when I get some time.
