I've played several V Ns before Shuffle!; namely, Kanon, Deardrops, AIR, Sengoku Rance, and My Girlfriend Is The President. Out of all those games, Kanon and AIR were the only ones with spectacular writing. MGITP was O.K., I guess, but way too silly at times. Deardrops wasn't bad, but it could've been much better.

I couldn't get into Air and only finished one route of Deardrops. Air in particular was a disappointment since it was by Key and I had high expectations for it.

You might enjoy something like G Senjou No Maou more if you want character drama or whatever.

Interesting. I didn't mind Shuffle, but my standards on such things are generally lower. I read a lot of generic manga; I suspect I've become a bit desensitized to the cliches one finds in such things. (which, naturally, extends to anime and Japanese V Ns.)
