Gotta have your holiday traditions, right?

Comedy equals pain times distance, right? That's kind of the thing, Retsupurae got big enough that they got known, and the people who were riffing about it not only heard about it, which might have been fine, but it sought them out. Kind of the difference between being on the news and being int he tabloids. It's not really their fault but I do think it took some of the wind out of RP's sails. There's a difference between saying "you need to have a sense of humour about yourself" in a callous way, as it's often taken, versus building an internal sense of distance on your own pain, and understanding that when people laugh about these flaws and foibles it's often because they feel them too.

I actually was re-watching a lot of their Kickstarter Nonstarters and forgot about Billy until that post. A damned shame but I did watch it again after reading your post.

Some people just don't know how to take a joke and I mean that in terms of certain RP fans, not the targets of the RP's. That's why the autistic girl got so much shit - not because eRP did a vid on her but because assholes wouldn't leave her alone. Same for other videos I'm sure like Josh but also this one if you remember of a guy eating a bunch of pizza rolls. I'm sure slowbeef and the others had a big laugh about it and then forgot about it but it was taken down presumably because the guy was getting hounded by dickheads.

But if you know anything about the...political climate of You Tube these days you know that "it's just a joke" isn't an excuse anymore. If you have a fandom of assholes constantly going around attacking people, maybe you have to ask what you are doing to contribute to this hateful mob. I think RP probably asked themselves that and it's to their credit that they changed their ways, unlike a lot of YT channels now that refuse to ever back down from the awful shit they contribute.

One of my favorite SomethingAwful stories because of the heart as much as the humor was one from "What's the worst Christmas gift you've ever received?" where someone wrote in detail how they got their brother a Mortal Kombat 3 arcade machine for Christmas and how no gift they ever gave or got made them feel as good as that day... and the punchline is their brother got them a leather checkbook cover.

To the best of my knowledge there hasn't been new episode since July 2018. Are they not making any more episodes? I have seen Slowbeef over on the Fight Palace and his own channel is still going, but as far as I know he's stopped collaborating with Diabetus.

Apparently Diabetus had a kid, so maybe he doesn't have time for Retsupurae right now.

What inspired me bumping this thread was a discussion on SA about if RP has aged well because a lot of their humor was "mean spirited". I mean, some of it was...dunnoif that means it hasn't aged well but whatever.

But stuff like this is just priceless and forever good.

Why wouldn't it be? The place is far and away the most active forum I frequent.

Unless Reddit counts but it's its own weird thing.

There was a "giving each other shit" quality that I always enjoyed. Some of it was mean, no doubt, but the intention wasn't necessarily to hurt. Humor is a coping mechanism, laughter is a pain response. It helped that they can be funny whether they're being mean or not. They got the difference, that mean can be funny, but mean isn't inherently funny on its own. A lot of more prominent YouTubers came to fame not really getting that, and ended up crashing and burning.

And humour is a faddish, cyclical thing. It had been a case of constant oneupsmanship for years, how dark and vulgar and cruel you could go while still being funny. But ironically, shock tactics can get stale like anything else.

I still really like some of their longplays and actual L Ps. They had a really good bounce-off, an ability to create skits on the fly.

This is a video I recently found for the first time while looking up their most popular videos:

It's a Diabetus solo effort and is funny but mostly I think people should watch it as a time capsule back to 2008 or 2009.

The ones I keep coming back to are their R Ps of Dracula Unleashed, the Trapped Trilogy, Super Bummerman 2, anything with Electrical Beast or Cornshaq, Monster in My Pocket, Cage Hat, Fund the American Dream AKA My Vacation. and pretty much any Mario LP. I dunno what it is about Mario games but they make comedy gold in Retsupurae. Mario Dies At The End is a modern classic XD

It doe seem like Mario just equals gold. LP Mario super slowly, Family, Suicidal Mario Party guy....it just keeps going and going.

I haven't watched all those reuploaded Chip RP's but I'm not sure if their "Let's Recommend" for Sir Ron Lionheart was saved. That was good, too. I recall him stretching out Mario's face.

Also is Slenderman a thing anymore? I haven't heard about it in years. Maybe FNAF took all his fans.

I think there's a few reasons why Slenderman disappeared. I know that a few years ago, there was a murder case where some teenagers sacrificed someone to try summoning him, I think there was a poorly received Hollywood movie at some point, and more recently, the creator of Tribe Twelve was outed as a sexual predator.

This game is fucking bad. I had heard it was bad but this is ridiculous. It looks cheap, it plays terribly, it makes no sense...

Having watched more of their co-op stuff, they really do...comport themselves very different than in RP. Just different characters, or maybe it's more like their real selves and not characters as seen in RP's. Obviously most RP's were also a long time ago so maybe they just changed.

But I notice how much more chill slowbeef is when playing a bad game himself. There was some of this in the wrongpurae of Overblood. He shit talked the game but clearly just had fun with it instead of ANGRY.

But I miss his skits. He doesn't seem to do those anymore.

And the Wifestreams. None of those anymore, either. I guess the fact their kids aeregrowing maybe precludes her joining in much anymore.
