Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Hello, I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I'd like my ban to be removed. I hope not to offend again.

~Kaworuto: Your suspension is for edit warring on Neon Genesis Evangelion – The Children, specifically that long quote which you replaced on the page after it was removed. When there's a dispute about an addition to a page, it needs to be resolved on the page's discussion page or possibly though P Ms.

~Yasmin Perry: You unilaterally removed the pic on Ensemble Dark Horse in clear defiance of the note on the page, which you also removed. Explain yourself.

I didn't think the picture was really good, but I apologize for removing it. Now, if anyone will accept my apology, is an open question.

Reason for the suspension? Its again for the grammar?

Yasmin, you are a regular participant in Image Pickin'. If anyone should know the protocol for changing an image, it's you. Seriously, man.

rafi, you were edit warring over a quote on Neon Genesis Evangelion – The Children. Just because the user removing it edit warred doesn't mean you can arbitrarily put it back without discussion. Regardless of its merit, that quote has some serious length issues. Clear Concise Witty.

[up] Yes, use PMs, the discussion page, or Ask The Tropers. Note that, in this particular case, you'd be asking if the quote is in fact suitable for the example, since the other user received a suspension for edit warring.

Given that this is your third strike, and considering the frankly alarming quantity of editing notifiers you've received, we've decided on an extended suspension of two weeks. This is to get the message across. Post here again on or around 10 Feb. and we'll reevaluate your case.

~Sayla0079: Sorry, missed your reply.

Since we've cleared up what you're doing wrong, can we count on you to follow proper style and comply with our example-writing rules in the future? See How to Write an Example if you want the full spiel, and note that we have help topics on the forums for example writing and grammar.

I'm unsure what I did to get edit-suspended. I only just noticed when I tried to add "My Friends and Zoidberg" to the "Bleach (S) Abridged" page. New episode of that out, by the way.

Wait, I just remembered that... less-than-civilized argument I got into on the Bleach Headscratchers page. If that's what brought this suspension, I apologize for my behavior.

DenisK21: It was indeed your less than civil kerfuffle on the Bleach Headscratchers page. Wiki articles are not a battleground. Manga are not the end of the world. If you feel the urge to get into a fight, step back, or ask help from the troper community in Ask The Tropers if you are unsure how to approach the issue. This is a first strike, so we're willing to work with you. Is that clear?

Fractured Artifact: Your edit on November 4th on Badass Adorable had you adding an image to the page. When you try to edit the page, you will see this large note hidden in the text.

%% Per admin request, pages with medium-specific subpages should not have pics. ]

%% Images should be placed on the subpages; please see them to know which still need pics.

This is an instruction to editors, and even pinpoints you to the previous discussions that led to the decision in case you have any questions. Ignoring said message should not be done, but it is not such a terrible offence that would merit any sort of suspension. However, you were then sent a private message regarding the importance of hidden notes and instructions, and your response to it was very dismissive and rude. This earned you the suspension. Now, to make some things clear:

  • The wiki is informal and fun, but we do have rules in order to function. An entire index of them.
  • When somebody sends you a helper message, chances are they're trying to help, not be mean-spirited. Especially when the person on the other end is a moderator.
  • Rudeness is not tolerated, especially when you have not been attacked in any way, shape or form.

I don't see any immediate problems with your edits. Would you tell me what prompted that kind of rude response?

lu127: Thank you for replying so quickly. On its own, my reply was rude and unjustified. However, when put in the context of the CONSTANT HARASSMENT I had been getting from that same editor, it is more understandable. My previous communications with said editor were more intentionally civil, and then there was the straw that broke the camels back; which was also the cause of my absence from the wiki until this point, as I was avoiding the borderline cyber bullying.

While I understand that editors are the glue that holds the wiki together, please appreciate the contributions of the casual users are the reason they have anything to hold together. Therefore, using their tenuous power abusively is counterproductive to the mission statement.

All that being aired, I now understand how my response was unproductive. In the future I will resolve grievances through more official channels.

I have noticed I'm still edit banned and, since I want to make a little edit to the Undertale page, any chance I can be, you know, unbanned please.

FYI, I am a totally different person from The Leondude, for example, I regularly slack off and get told off by the teacher for it, while he's always there getting on with his work.

Not quite so fast. Fractured, if a person corrects your edits, they are trying to make sure that you comply with our editing rules. They are there for a reason, not just so we can be some kind of arbitrary power-mad jerks.

For example, if a subpage has a comment saying not to add an image, and you add one anyway, you're directly defying a decision that was made by the community. Further, you have no excuse for not reading the comment. This isn't hard unless you make it hard.

Berrenta, Fighteer: Thank you for your responses and your effort to resolve this matter. No one is debating that corrections are warranted and necessary. I contend that there is a wrong way to do it. An editor, doggedly pursuing a single user for weeks over issues that were, at times, as minor as a semicolon creates a level of stress that would cause even a normally calm person to lash out. The actions of that editor, to me, were belittling and hostile.

What we agree on (in addition to the edits being technically correct) is that I handled this issue incorrectly, by way of rude personal messaging. When I'm being bullied online, there is a protocol to follow (not escalation) and I should follow it.
