I'm certainly not saying that Lyse isn't Ala Mhigan, it's really just that it does look questionable. That said, colorism is also a problem in Japanese society, not just explicit racism.

It's been fun.

Yeah, I get where you are coming from. I think it’s also important to note that Lyse is explicitly the face of Stormblood in the marketing.

I’m glad Erenville is popular with the fanbase enough to actually show up in the trailer.

@Bexlerfu

On the Mighty Whitey page:

  • While the actual situation is much more nuanced, Lyse from Final Fantasy XIV's second expansion, Stormblood has been criticised as this. The main plot of Stormblood is leading a rebellion against the Garlean Empire so that Gyr Abania and Yanxia are no longer part of it. One of the central characters, Lyse, has been criticised as being this trope, but also had a few defenders:
    • Proponents of this criticism point out that Gyr Abanian people are primarily Highlanders and thus, a big source of black and brown people in the game. Lyse also spends the first act or so criticising the people of Gyr Abania for not standing up not knowing that they are outnumbered and outgunned and have been so for decades. Meanwhile, she has lived outside Gyr Abania for so long and can't exactly relate. What also isn't helping is that she is very fair skinned and blonde, and when Ala Mhigo is finally freed, is placed in a leadership position along with a council of others.
    • Others however point out that Lyse doesn't really count - because Highlanders are diverse - in fact Blonde haired and blue eyed Highlanders aren't uncommon (Minfilia is in fact a Highlander herself.) and plenty of Gyr Abanian NPCs are also portrayed as "White". She herself is also from the land, which itself doesn't really count as she is only viewed as an outsider in the sense an immigrant may be. Additionally, Stormblood was her source of Character Development - with her growing out of her Unintentionally Unsympathetic tendencies and not being portrayed as inherently superior or "more skilled" than the natives of Ala Mhigo but learning from her failures, and only being a part of the rulers.

@Red

The main issue is that Sadu is the leader of the Dotharl tribe and she's putting her people first. If the issue doesn't involve the Dotharl in some way (or at least promise her a good fight), she's not gonna come.

While I've described Lyse's situation in Mighty Whitey terms myself, the primary thing that keeps it from actually being that was the fact that, unless there's something I'm unaware of, it wasn't written by whiteys.

If Lyse were a black haired Yamato Nadeshiko type, then it would be more equivalent to the trope. As-is it's more tone deaf with regards to western audiences than anything, and I'm not sure how likely it would have been to occur to the Japanese story writers in the first place.

They forget that the Ala Mhigan resistance rescued them from Uldah at the end of ARR and was involved in the resistance for years. Up until visiting the villages that had been basically stripped of most of its population and such, she had never seen an Ala Mhigan unwilling to fight.

She was preachy but so was god damn everyone in the resistance, eyes the Griffin and the Griffin's body double in the MSQ and Monk quests, the kids attempting to summon Rhalgar and so on...

The game also never implies Lyse is right for berating those who don't resist. Her character arc is about gaining wisdom on that matter.

That is what Hien explains to her on why he left, if the people do not want to fight he wont. The confrontation with Zenos in Doma proved differently.

The problem with that is that, is like the people who Lyse calls out tend to go " Damn it, you're right, you did more for that merchant than I did, I can't call myself an Ala Mhigan"

I'm citing that one NPC guy who you later teach to kill monsters. He's the villager in the questline where you go to that village to get recruits.

So the narration kind of rewards her for her attitude.

They make a point to say that Rhalgr's Beacon and the taking of Castellum Velodyna that pushed back the Garleans out of the fringes got the villages moving and the heroine of that battle was M'naago.

So I forget if I mentioned this earlier, but I bought the cookbook. Apple strudel, pasta alla bosciola, and starlight dodo are all Gridanian recipes.

Gridania should have a healthy supply of rosemary and thyme, as well as pepper and salt from Ul'dah and Ala Mhigo, lemons from Limsa, and presumably imported butter.

So how the heck is Gridanian food supposed to be plain?

That can't be true, because Mother Miounne's pies are apparently well sought-after and she freely makes sweets for the Starlight Celebration.

Gridanian food is supposed to be bland?

I know Sharlayan is famed for its terrible cuisine, but IDK much about other nations' reputations with food

To quote an adventurer at the Carline Canopy: "Gridanian food is as bland as it gets. I had heard the rumors, but gods, the water had more flavor!"

Ul'dahn and Limsan soldiers also rib a Gridanian soldier for considering an Ala Mhigan stew too spicy (though Ala Mhigans do heavily season their food on average).

I would imagine that's probably the soldier's own preferences rather than an indictment of Gridanian food as a whole.

It's been fun.

Theres a quest line based in the Firmament that notes that Gridania is nearly as insular as Ishgard, particularly on topics like trade. So outside of notable individuals, I don't believe Gridania has a healthy avenue of trade with its neighbors.

Gridania's dialogue in the background hasn't aged well.

There's still that one Duskwight getting profiled by the Wood police.

Gridania is clearly becoming less insular over time as shown by discussions in other quests. The Blacksmith quests have soldieres, mercenaries, and adventurers based in Gridania ordering metal weapons from Naldiq & Vymelli's. An increasing number of Ala Mhigans are integrating into Gridania, as shown by the Ala Mhigans in the Twin Adders unit led by Captain Gairhard in the Carpenter quests. Then there's Gridania's increasing involvement in international politics, as shown with them choosing to fight alongside the rest of the Eorzean Alliance to free Ala Mhigo and later heading to Garlemald in Endwalker.

The official cookbook also has Mogria, a moogle from the Churning Mists, and Gyohan, a Namazu from Yanxia, visiting, shopping, cooking, and harvesting vegetables in the Twelveswood.

Stillglade Fane is also often used as a de facto meeting place for the Alliance (probably because of Gridania's central location)

Also because the Alliance was formed to fight against Garlemald and the border was between Gridania and conquered Ala Mhigo I assume. Best to set your headquarters not too far from the frontlines.
