See. Thats where you're wrong IIRC Kyon was PREVENTED from touching the device first time he got it. Just before it was reseted by Yuki it fell from the table it was placed on when Mikuru accidentaly bumped into it and picked it back up to return it. The thing is its defence mechanism(which was to melt if someone unauthorised were to touch it) didn't activate and she even gained some sort of awareness from the device as if she was an authorised user

Now please be reminded that the only people who can touch it are supposed to be either direct ancestor(Miyokichi) or close relatives

The thing is she was able to touch it BEFORE it was resetted and assigned to Kyon

The only thing this proves is that Mikuru and Miyoko may be related to Fujiwara

We seem to have a miscommunication here. I don't see how it happened, since you directly quoted me saying "Chapter 64" before talking about everything except that chapter, but I'll try and clear up what I'm saying.

I am well aware of everything that you said in your post. I was aware of all of that when I posted before.

My entire argument stems from THIS section in chapter 64. I'm not talking about the weapon's yet that took place in chapter 20 something, I'm talking about the point where Kyon picks it up in chapter 64. Not way back in the early parts when he was handing it off to Miyokichi without touching it. Not in the hospital after Yuki reset it. I'm talking about the moment Fujiwara drops it in chapter 64 and then Kyon picks it up a moment later.

Here's the excerpt in question:

Fujiwara flinched at that, dropping the cylinder — which stopped itself just over the ground, rotating lazily. "O...of course I'd still be in your shadow...." Furiously shaking his head, he redonned his angry mask. "Just slipshank the damn thing already!" he snarled, before blurring away. Kyon suspected he could at least try to follow, but frowned sharply.

"The more I hear, the less I understand," he groused. Reaching down to heft the cylinder, he remarked to Ryouko, "Tag this one so I don't get it mixed up and create some sort of time loop when we drop it off later."

An AR tag reading, 'temporary,' immediately popped into view before he pocketed it, then freezing. Wait a minute, he thought. Wasn't the thing supposed to be genetically keyed, or something? Fujiwara must have had the foresight to disable that, then ... but that meant he had to reset it again and attune it to ... Miyoko?

That made a degree of sense. "Ryouko, can you reset the genetic lock on that tool?" he prompted.

"That exceeds my permissions!" she declared.

He frowned. "Well, someone has to," he reasoned. "I guess I'll have to take it to Yuki. She probably remembers the state that it was in last time, so we can just set it to that."

Fujiwara drops the slider weapon.

Kyon picks up the slider weapon.

My theory is that Fujiwara *didn't* reset the slider weapon, and that Kyon's blind spot the size of Hokkaido prevented him from even thinking of the possibility that, in his emotional state, Fujiwara never reset the slider weapon or disabled the melt-into-goo defense at all.

TL;DR:

What I'm saying is that instead of this:

Fujiwara > |RESET| > Kyon > |RESET| > Miyokichi > Mikuru > |RESET| > Kyon

What happened was this:

Fujiwara > Kyon > |RESET| > Miyokichi > Mikuru > |RESET| > Kyon

Well, it's been there. But is it finished?

No progress has been made in a year. It's probably as finished as it's going to get.

Has anyone contacted Tropers/Halbarad about this?

It's been quite a long time hasn't it?

I'm on my fifth reread and I'm not tiring of it. It's a bit surreal knowing that when I first picked up K:BDH up, it was at the beach chapter. I remember stumbling upon it months prior and being really put off by the prologue, because I was dumb and didn't know at all what "In Medias Res" meant. I thought it was another crack fic, but then I trooped through the prologue and grew to love everything about K:BDH. After catching up, I discovered this place, and I met everyone here, both present and absent.

I still reminisce fondly about the days when this thread was really active. I remember Rainy, Pax, Jason, Agasa, Filraen, Sabres Edge, and that guy with the eye avatar whose name I can't really recall right now (EDIT: tamult!!), as well as all the other people I'm forgetting and all the derails back then. I remember when Brian used to visit every once in a while. In line with that I apologize for being an annoying little shit back then. Thinking of my 12 year old self makes me cringeeeee.

Now I've graduated highschool. It's funny how time flies. I just felt sentimental for a bit guys. This fic and this place were big parts of my formative years.smile

A question then! To spark some discussion for a little while at the very least. Where was K:BDH when you first picked it up? As I mentioned earlier, the beach. Only 30-ish chapters back then, good god. Read it on ff.net too haha. What a ride my first time reading was. Constantly assaulted with all my ff fantasies and such amazing writing.

[up]I actually managed to find the story really late, and if I remember right, I believe that Brian was up to Resonance Cascade I. Now THAT was a doozy of a chapter.

[up] Oh boy I remember not really liking that chapter so much compared to the others haha. Which in that context means I still loved it regardless. It was too "stressful" for me.

I always enjoyed the plot-y So L of BDH more than the plot-y action. Though, I understand the latter gives way to the former. I just mourn that we didn't get more Sasaki fluff. Brian wrote her POV and dynamic with Kyon in such a way that felt especially hnng-y to me. I always savor the last few chapters in my rereads for that reason.

I wish I could reread everything like it was the first time...

We could try that again maybe. Kinda hard without any sort of source material.

I remember quite vividly that more than half the time we'd be talking about things only tangentially related to the recent chapter in between updates. Derails were frequent. tongue

It would be hard to mimic that regardless because there aren't as many active posters as there were before. Sad to say.

We could try, though. There's that one story someone started (I think it's even on this same page), about Taniguchi and Kunikida learning things. There's also this collection of barely-started stories, which I'd much enjoy seeing continued. Even if theoretically.

EDIT: It's actually on the previous page, and it's by Specular.

Specular did some really kick-ass stuff, especially considering it had just the right amount of Original Flavor to make things interesting. Still, I'm really wondering whether Halbarad dropped off the face of the Earth or something. Because it's a real disappointment that this is still a Dead Fic. Hell, I'd be willing to get behind any continuation as long as it was good.

as long as it was good.

See that's the case.tongue

Reading some of Brian's more introspective pieces really sheds some light on how good he was at what he did. Ephemeral especially (which is co-written with Sarsaparilla I believe) made me think and contemplate life. It's amazing how many of his works could get you to do that.

I have a few hundred words written down for genderbending being a thing in the BDH universe. It involves Kyon's coat and some nonsense about his PDA physically altering his body to fit a decidedly female costume. The cuteness of Fem!Kyon is more than enough to bypass Sasaki's power...or something. Then through judicious use of reassurance and veiled promises by the BDH, he gets convinced to keep it up for at least the rest of the day, To be honest the idea's pretty undeveloped right now. I confess it's just been a way to ham-fist fem!Kyon into the universe in the most convenient/plausible way.[lol] Otherwise, sliders zap him....and stuff.

I remember this idea arising from thinking about how Kyon could get a picture of his female self in his "special collection". Hmmm, the rest of the BDH never caught wind of that come to think about it...

...Wait, wasn't it sort of implied that Tsuruya and Mikuru at the very least know that something like that exists?

They're the ones who gave him the first pics in said collection to begin with, after he owned up to them about his original collection and perma-deleted it in front of them. Lucky guy.

I always assumed that at one point, everyone would have a pic in the collection but at the same time none of them would be aware that such a collection existed, so everyone still thinks they're being sneaky and shit.

So it would stay that Mikuru and Tsuruya think that they're the only ones who've sent pics, but actually Haruhi, Sasaki, and Kanae have sent some together, followed by Kuyou and Nagato. So it's like a secret across groups with a very lucky Kyon in the middle of it all. [lol]

Where was K:BDH when you first picked it up?

Chapter 24 was the latest one back then, I think. It's been quite a while for me.

Thinking back, reading this fic made me take a good look at my own writing over the years since I started—my god, has it really been almost seventeen years?—and realize how far I have yet to go to reach Brian's level. I mean, I got better over the years, but his was a level I aspired to... until college took over and now I have no time to write anymore. Hell, I barely have enough time to read anymore and that's sad.

Well considering Brian's Author Existence Failure and how Halbarad hasn't said a word after chapter 64, You might as well consider this fic as dead.

It's a shame too, I wish it could have been completed, but unless someone else takes up the torch *again*, it's not ever happening.

I remember reading something about a general outline of things to come being in the hands of Halbarad. If that was shared out I could see someone else picking up the torch pretty easily.

At least the story are at a point where most questions are already addressed, with even Sasaki and Miyuki's arcsmore or less closed. The only points left were Fujiwara's (who I never expected to get answers because adult!Mikuru claimed didn't know much about him) and Kanae's true nature/Wataru.

[up][up]Well, I just sent Halbarad a message on Soulriders asking for Brian's notes. He's slightly more active there than he is here, so maybe we'll hear back from him in a month or two.
