How am I going to be friends with someone I never talk to? I assume that if someone's reading a book by themselves they don't want me to bother them.

I think about half the reason Hisao started to get to know Hanako (and vice-versa) is via Lilly.

Personal experience tells me it's not as unlikely as one might think. Unless of course I'm just that cute it would work out that way... Which on the other hand doesn't speak against Hanako...

Asexual, unless you mean unless I'm so cute that Hanako couldn't bear to stay silent around me.

I would totally be friends with Rin and Emi. Shizune would annoy me, I really like Misha but she'd probably be too obnoxious to hang out with in real life given that she's constantly with Shizune, and I'd probably ignore Hanako and Lilly because (1) I'm introverted as well so I'd probably not even talk to Hanako, and (2) Lilly is too posh and she bores me.

[up][up][up]I wasn't talking about you, since I don't know what you look like. Or even your gender. And sexual orientation wasn't what I was going for either.

It's funny, but it's the other way around for me. I don't think I could put up with Misha long enough to get to know Shizune.

Getting along with Shizune is probably a matter of whether or not she sees you as a project. That would definitely get old.

Yeah, I feel the same way.

I need to do some more routes, since I don't have a very good idea about the other girls.

I could see myself being friends with Hanako. That's one of the reasons I picked her first; I like reading, the player character seems to have developed a like for reading and she likes reading. In other words it's something we all share.

Hisao is likeable, but I kinda find him too weak, in a way. Then again, I usually dislike protagonists because they can't handle simple things and freak out... However, I really liked him in Rin's route. More so than Rin herself.
Well that's rare.

The things, ultimately the game is never about the protagonist. Well, rarely, anyway. It's always about the people with the routes. They're the ones the stories are really centered around.

So an underdeveloped protagonist? They're just half-audience-surrogate, half-supporting-character anyway.

But in the best games it is about the protagonist just as much as the heroines - Steins Gate, Fate Stay Night and Clannad are all good examples.

It's true I haven't seen much development. But maybe being not really sure who he is becomes part of his personality. In Hanako's route Hisao is asked about himself and just kind of stumbles. I could easily see him never having to have thought deeply about who he is beyond what he did before. And now he isn't able to do the things he used to.

Hisao is pretty much the perfect VN protagonist. He's a fully developed character who's undeveloped enough to be relatable and the fact that he's so undeveloped is turned into the core of his character.

[up]Relating to this (and I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before), but I noticed that in each route (including the MANLY PICNIC), Hisao either has or gains personality traits like the character of the route. The closest thing to an exception is Rin's route, where while he does gain an appreciation for artistic effort, he doesn't really understand art itself until the end, nor understanding Rin herself (despite the times when it should have been clear).

For the others though, For the one I mentioned in spoilers at the top, Hisao avoids the women. For Shizune's route, Hisao becomes more competitive. For Emi's route, Hisao becomes more active and outgoing. And apparently has a staring thing he and Emi do which Rin can't figure out. :P*

. For Lilly's route, Hisao, throughout the course of the route, grows to accept the disability which had become a part of him. And for Hanako's route, Hisao is more bookish and withdrawn.

Yeah. The first act is about Hisao finding a new direction in his life. This direction is influenced by the people he meets. If he doesn't take any of the opportunities presented to him, he loses the will to carry on and dies.

Eh, I think F/SN is a good example of how a developed protagonist can be a bad thing. At least, Shirou is so unsympathetic, that it makes me want to quit sometimes.

But then, I just saw him getting horny because of an unconscious girl, so this may influence my judgment at the moment.

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

If you have a developed character, there's always a risk someone won't like him or her. However, aside from just viewpoint characters in visual novels, having an undeveloped character is rarely better. They just become flat. It also depends a little on the kind of visual novel. If it's more towards a kinetic novel with few if any choices, you need to have a more developed character, since there are fewer chances of the choices themselves doing the developing, or leading to it.

I still like Hisao, though, and I think he's a good protagonist for the game. He's just someone I'd probably not become friends with. Well, relatively speaking. If I had a route in the game I might, but it not likely lead anywhere deeper.

I find developed and complex protagonists tend to be able to carry better stories. Sharin no Kuni and G Senjou no Maou are two of my favorite visual novels and Kenichi and Kyousuke are far from flat. Same goes for FSN, Clannad or Higurashi.

I'd probably get along well with Misha (and Shizune) and Lilly. I dunno about Emi and Rin.

I'm the kind of person who'd try to strike up a conversation (yes, I'm very annoying xD) with Hanako, so maybe I'd be friends with her as well.

I would probably end up in the same class as Lilly and Kenji due to the fact one of my eyes is blind (I have other disabilities as well). I'm sure I would simply ignore Kenji as much as possible since I'm not fond of conspiracy theory freaks. My previous roommate was like that, but instead of feminists he rambled about Jews :/

Okay, the sex music is pretty bad.

Not nearly as horrible as Fate Stay Night's, but still bad.

I'm not big fan of sex scenes in KS, but at least I don't feel urge to skip them ASAP like in case of FSN.
