Book check, where are you RIGHT NOW in the book? I wanna make an estimate about how long before we can talk about spoilered stuff. And wow, this book has a lot of chapters. Even the Wheel of Time books managed to keep it to 50-60.

Hey, just keep it under spoiler text, preferably with the chapter number so we can go on discussing as we catch up.

At the Epilogue.

There you go again, you munchkin. We already HAVE one of those! Be something else!

And yeah, I was correct about what they mean by 'Axial'. It's a wonder none of Roshar is radioactive.

Edit: Shallan's story, the one Wit told back to her later. Is anyone else getting an Attack On Titan -vibe from it? Because with the Reveal of the Dark Secret of the Recreance, it screams of foreshadowing.

Finished it. Wow. From the Tor previews I was thinking this was a Breather Episode, and it... wasn't.

Elhokar is dead. Well, shit. Turns out he was about to become a Lightweaver, but Hoid got his spren in the epilogue.

Odium is wonderfully terrifying and everything else. Sanderson does like his Faux Affably Evil antagonists.

Taravangian's plan would be funny if it wasn't so sad. You idiot, did you really think that would work?

Moash continues learning all the wrong lessons.

Gonna be interesting to see how the ardents react to the fact that Dalinar briefly was the Almighty. They're probably going to just pretend it didn't happen.

Speaking of Dalinar... hah! Cultivation Out-Gambitted Odium! Nicely done, and shows a recurring theme of the Cosmere: The evil Shards think that humans can't change, while the good Shards know that they can.

Still shocked that Venli is the Parshendi Radiant. I thought Timbre was Eshonai's soul, but she mentions that humans killed her grandfather at one point, implying that he was bonded to a Knight. I wonder what she is precisely. A Reacher?

Oh, and apparently the reason Lift sucks at using Abrasion is because no one outside of Shinovar uses skates. Makes sense, considering the lack of frozen lakes.

Oh, one last thing, not directly mentioned in the book: The Thaylens worship the Passions. Odium is the Shard of Passion. Maybe they're the last remnant of the religion that once worshiped Odium.

For some bizarre reason, no matter how Odium was described, in my head I kept seeing him as the KFC Colonel with a pimp cane.

Yeah, he's like the ANTI-Kaladin. He even seems to be developing the same depression.

I think only we know what that bit means. Though I have to wonder where the rest of he body is. the Cognitive and Spiritual pieces are accounted for, but what about the Physical?

Adding to theme: the good guys make better prophecies because of this. Right, Preservation?

I've been looking for a place to mention that Last Thing. Nice you brought it up.

[up][up] Timbre is a lightspren. Remember Captain Ico? His father's in the hold, and his daughter ran away from her job to chase stupid dreams.

Also, no reaction to Syl's backstory? Her being the last Honorspren is really interesting.

Not the last. But the last who knew the Radiants of old.

Also. Now that Hoid seems to be planning to bring Harmony into the mix....Nale vs Wax? It would just be perfect to have Lawful Stupid Incarnate get his arse kicked by him.

Speaking of Nale, I'm pretty sure he's going to end up fighting for the good guys after all. We don't know his precise oath, but it sounded like he swore to follow the singers, not Odium. So once Venli has turned the singers against Odium, the Skybreakers will turn with them.

Eh, as long as he gets a Aluminium bullet in his kneecap courtesy of Vindication along the way. Lawful Stupid should be punished.

(I am reasonably sure a Aluminium bullet would severely reduce the effectiveness of Stormlight based healing. Healing Feruchemy is just 'stored' healing, not so much the sort of Healing Factor Stormlight is.)

I keep forgetting that Aluminum does weird stuff to Investiture. I'm really looking forward to that explanation.

I'm not sure we're going to get one. Word of God is that it's an "Investiture sink," like a heat sink. I'm not really sure there's much more to it than that. Different materials have different properties, and this is one of aluminum's.

[up][up] There's supposed to be a Time Skip between books 5 and 6, right? That should give enough time for The Lost Metal to come out, and then the new crew will be able to help on Roshar.

So, I've had some thoughts and here is my...lets call it theory.

    HERE BE SPOILERS!
The theory is basically on the coming of Humans on Roshar and how it all...went down from there.

In the beginning, Roshar was...Roshar. A bunch of non-human species (Dawnsingers, Aimians, etc) and two Shards (Honor and Cultivation). There were Humans in the Greater Roshar System but they lived on Ashyn not Roshar. Or as its today known, the "Tranquiline Halls"

(Sidebar: Ashyn is a Planet in the same system, which has at a point in the past suffered a massive global catastrophe. The few surviving humans there live in floating cities. A future story will be set there)

Once upon a time, Odium arrived in Greater Roshar and, deciding to not piss off Honor and Cultivation straight away (cause 2 vs 1 is a suckers game) he went after Ashyn first, maybe trying to recruit the humans there to be his advance force. He offered them the power of Surges (to be more specific Voidbinding) and eventually, everything went to shit, the Dawnshards were used and well fuck.

A bunch of humans from Ashyn, who couldn't make it to the Flying Cities managed to escape to the next Planet over, Roshar. There Honor and Cultivation, taking pity on them and offered them a refuge. This might also be the time Honor manages to bind Odium on Braize.

First specification: I believe these humans had rejected Odium at that point, seeing the destruction his surges had brought them. Mainly because I feel the direct comparison to the Parshendi refugee's who had rejected Odium might be very significant in eventually bridging between the surviving Parshendi and Humanity. There is also the thing about the Halls being conquered by the Voidbringers which could simply be someone loosing the note saying it was the First Voidbringers (humans) and not the Second Voidbringers (Dawnsingers)

The humans where, maybe to protect them from Roshar's violent weather (I don't think the Highstorms started with them breaking free, just that Humans started encountering them) or maybe because of Fantastic Racism, segregated in Shin until the girl came over the wall and found Stormlight (or maybe a Spren bond? Who knows.)

Suddenly Humans are no longer their own enclave, they are part of Roshar...and here comes in the line from Words of Radiance (I think) where Parshendi songs mention the Sprens betraying them. Because Humans might have simply offered something the Dawnsingers weren't able to; the Nahel Bond.

Of course, humans being humans (or people being people) I do believe at the time, at least part of humanity started to spread out beyond Shin and taking land away from Dawnsingers. At the same time, I do believe some Dawnsingers might have started to resent humans new and possibly deeper bond with the Spren. In short, anger, provocation and possibly violence on both sides.

And some Dawnsingers, eventually, decide that if Honor's and Cultivations spren don't side with them, maybe the old god of humanity, the ones they left behind might have a better offer.

This is the point where the first Dawnsinger Voidbringers come from. And the war of the First Desolation. Humanity manages to win (possibly with Honor siding with them because, even if the Dawnsingers have a point they did sign up with Cosmere's top contender for Satan?) until Odium goes 'You know what. You get an bonus live, you get an bonus life, BONUS LIFE FOR EVERYONE'

As for the Dawnsingers who didn't join with Odium? Well, all these new Fused would of course need bodies.

Second Specification: The reason Honor has always managed to calm down the Knights Radiant worry about their Surges (before he went rant-y in the end) was that he simply told them "...You're using Surgebinding not Voidbinding." and explaining the difference patiently.

[up][up]Hm, interesting theory. I had been assuming—and I've seen several other people making edits under the same assumption—that the original Voidbringers destroyed Yolen. But Ashyn makes sense too. The only problem is that the translation naming humans as Voidbringers says they brought their god with them. It might be a mistake, but it implies that humans were still worshiping Odium when they arrived on Roshar. My guess is that Odium encouraged humans to conquer the Dawnsingers, and then offered power to the Dawnsingers when he realized what he could do to their gemhearts, which they took in their desperation.

[up][up]I assume the breaking of Adonasium was what did Yolen in. It feels too...small to have it been solely Odiums doing.

And I assume that by "bringing their god with them" it can simply mean "bringing stories with them" or his attention to Roshar. I sort of doubt Honor or Cultivation would accept active Odium servants after he wrecked Sel already (+ wounded Ambition). I also point out that the source we have may not be unbiased. Though there may have been undercover agents of Odium among them, similar to what he's doing on Scadrial.

And even according to that text the Gods of the Dawnsingers told them to help them, which just feels 'refugee' to me, not 'advance force'

Dammit, all those words and we still don't know much about what Dustbringers are about. Lots of juicy information on Skybreakers, though.

Azish confirmed for Best Culture. Their slave rebellion takes the form of a complaint to the government through the proper channels.

As for the Dawnsingers who didn't join with Odium? Well, all these new Fused would of course need bodies.
Dawnsingers who didn't join up with Odium are unlikely to willingly host the spirits of those who did. Fused can't bodyjack without being let in.

So? Who said they didn't want to have some spren move in to change forms and didn't know the Fused were coming? Venli and her friends surely didn't know what was coming or happen to them.

Or they'd been misinformed. Consent is one thing, informed consent is another one.

It occurs to me that Roshar, like Scadrial before the Best Shard did some redecorating, would have no fossil fuels, since everything has been stripped to the bedrock and the storms mean nothing settles in one place long enough to be buried and rot. At best, the only sources of fossil fuels would be underwater. Although given how it has metamorphic gems but no volcanic activity, perhaps it was added in later by one of the Shards. Doubt it though. It's one of those things that are REALLY easy to forget about.

As long as stormlight keeps flowing, people on Roshar would probably consider fossil fuels woefully inefficient even if you gave some to them.

That was my thought too. Especially once they figure out how to make the Surge-fabrials like the Soulcasters. Perhaps that is the secret the Aimians are protecting? Arclo called themselves friends to the Radiants, after all.

But even without the Surge-fabrials, they can do a lot. Navani's engineers are already working on a flying ship that a Windrunner can use instead of individually Lashing everyone they want to bring with them.

117 spoilers: "Our master has given us a task, We shall see it completed."

Such a cool line.

120: Think any Shallan/Veil/Radiant shippers will come out of the woodwork?

Also Maya <3

121: Of course the very first thing Shallan notices about Kaladin post battle is that he lost his boots. :P

Also wow Nale, confirming the whole Braize=Damnation thing with an offhand comment. Does that mean Odium is diverting the afterlife to his planet? Gotta wonder about the energy requirements of that. Unless it involves Spiritual Realm stuff.

And done!

Wow, that feeling after finishing a Stormlight book is always really good. There's just so much to process from everything that happened.

Now to go back and read the spoilered posts.
