Final Fantasy general

Go To

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

You mean Titan? He one shots the little flowers surrounding it but they get summoned back immediately.

Oh, I remember that thing! It occasionally showed up on the way to the Dragonpod only to slap one of my party members for 200 damage before running away immediately.

You get him in the same area. There'll be a weird battle early on where a rock guy attacks you and then leaves, and then one later on in the area where he's being accosted by two dragons, and begs you for help. If you beat the dragons, he'll join you.

And let me tell you, he's probably the third-most useful Eidolon in the entire game, next to Bahamut, Phoenix, and possibly Syldra. You summon him, and he negates the next (50 * (your level + 20)) points of physical damage. If a physical hit would attack you, it instead just impacts a hand made of sand that takes the damage instead. There's no visual indication of when the wall's gone, so either calculate it, recast the summon every coupla rounds and see if it takes, or wait until you start taking physical damage again.

Carbuncle's also pretty cool. Yeah, reflecting your own White magic hurts, but there's extreme fun to be had in reflecting five firagas off of your teammates, all to impact one enemy.

It was a lot of fun when I did the Four Job Fiesta. I didn't have any White Mages anyway, but I did have Black Mages and Summoners, so a lot of my single-target strategies involved Carbncle followed by a wave of reflected -aga spells.

It's an annual event where everyone who enters is given a random assortment of four jobs, one from each Crystal. Those are the only four jobs you can use, everyone in the team must be using one of them at all times, and you must have as many of the four jobs being used as possible at all times.

It's a fun challenge, and a great opportunity to see how classes you didn't think would work can turn out great. I made out like a bandit, honestly. I got Black Mage, Summoner, Geomancer, and Samurai. I pity the ones who wound up with Berserker.

Without White Magic, I learned just how useful Phoenix is, just to give an example.

Last summer's event had a sort of charity drive going. At one point, several people pledged to donate $[X] amount for each person who managed to complete the game. It really was a blast, and I hope to do it again if they start it up again.

It's a very fun Self-Imposed Challenge, and the way they set it up had a very nice group atmosphere to it. Everyone was working on the same challenge, and it was both a race and a total hoot.

So, my thoughts on FFVIII were pretty accurate so far.

The game is actually decent until Disk 3. It's at this point they just lost their damn minds.

Reading Edea's exposition about being "possessed all along by someone from DA FUTURE" just made me roll my eyes. The game doesn't do itself any favors by having all the Galbadian soldiers suddenly knowing Ultimecia's name. Some of the grunts in Deling City just tell you Seifer is in charge now and that works. The fact they now knwo the name of the hidden Big Bad however is just absurd.

They just didn't need time travel at all really. It's so completely unnecessary.

But yeah, up until this point, I've had very little to complain about the game. Seifer is a good character (probably the best in the game), Squall is forgettable but not bad, Rinoa is pretty, and the rest of the cast is at least colorful, even if they are completely two-dimensional. I did notice the dialogue was pretty nice and smooth apart from Squall's occasional melodrama.

Actually, that's the only thing that has bugged me thus far. Well, there are three things including that.

1. Squall's freakout after they get news Seifer died. Never mentioned or talked about again. It was random and very stupid.

2. Rinoa's father falls off the map. She never resolves her issues with him at all. The game saw fit to amek us talk tO Zone and Watts again but not her damn father?

3. The error ratio for the Galbadia missiles.... What? Why?

But now I'm on Disk 3, everything is piling up like a dung hill. Where did Galbadia Garden go?

EDIT:

Okay wait, four problems. NORG is never really mentioned or seen again. I liked that dude.

NORG wasn't dead he was morphing most likely into one of the little guys.

If you go back to that underground town they will explain a bit about NORG.

One scene that always bothered me is the orphanage reveal scene. I know it was foreshadowed, but the way it was played was just so...random.

See the Orphanage bit doesn't bug me because it's totally inconsequential.

"So...we all know each other from childhood? Cool."

And then you can ignore it.

As for NORG, it's still rather odd he played such a minor role in the game. He got his own theme song and everything.

Still, who's with me in regards to Seifer being a cool antagonist and character? I just love how he is totally The Hero in terms of personality and characteristics but he's still a villain.
