Final Fantasy general

Go To

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Even if that little bit of uniqueness sometimes sucked.

They couldn't all be winners. And the game was easy enough you can make any party work, anyway.

I'd honestly rather have one or two guys kind of sort of suck but have 12 other great unique characters to choose than like 6 people that are interchangeable.

Let's not pretend that the unique abilities of the cast of VI didn't fall off pretty fast and pretty hard once magic came into the picture, though.

I sure said that!

[up]Yeah, that was the case big time for me, and really it's the inevitable result of that level of customization.

Even than, though, some still had their unique niches even after the game ruins itself with magic (100% agree that letting everyone learn every spell is the greatest problem the game has). And the option was always there to mess with it.

You could just bulldoze everything with magic, but you if wanted to try something else you could, too.

Paladins tend to have healing magic and the reason why Snow's weapons have heroic names is because Snow tends to think of himself as a hero.

Actually, Snow getting the Ravager role instead of Medic which would be symbolic of him failing to be the hero he wants to be.

Or I'm thinking too hard about this because I don't think that Motomu Toriyama is that nuanced and just wanted Snow to have ice powers because his name is Snow.

[up][up]I don't disagree, but I also feel that, if the game is going to offer customization like that, it should offer a high degree of it- At least in V there's interesting possibilities in how abilities interact. In VI there's really none of that- Everyone's got a signature skill set and magic and never the two shall meet. Imagine how great it'd have been if Cyan's magic was expressed as Spellblade effects that also affected how his Bushido worked, for example.

@Hashil: I still think that having Terra and Celes be the only ones capable of magic would've been much better. On the other hand, magic is the only reason why Relm was so great. So I'm a bit conflicted about that.

Of course, you could also avoid the Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards problem by taking out the Celestriad and Soul of Thamasa.

That said, Relics are effectively a physical item equivalent of equipping mastered job skills. Like, the Genji Glove grants Dual Wield, and the Master's Scroll is Rapid Fire.

And sometimes they do intersect, though not always. I love giving Gau a Master's Scroll and watching him do 4 Catscratches in a turn.

It's not perfect , and it's not up to V's standard, but it's a bit more than 1 skill and magic and nothing else.

I have a message from another time...

Still, it could be improved in relatively small ways that'd keep the cast more distinct. We can all agree to that much, right?

[up][up]Hopefully, if/when we get a VI remake, SE can fine tune the magicite/skill system some more. You know, give it some style and make character skills more unique

IX and X did as good a job as VI as making everyone distinct at least til late game in terms of X.

With X, it comes down to a distinction between "lategame/endgame" and "postgame".

I think it's the [guard] and [provoke] abilities that let him draw heat onto himself, and that he's the best tank out of the XIII team.

Kinda funny, since Snow always seems to draw the ire of fucking everyone in-universe, so having abilities that let him take hits makes sense.

Wonder if that was done on purpose.

Snow is COM/RAV/SEN simply for balance reasons. There are already three other ME Ds.

While everyone in XIII has three paradigms they are good at, they all have one they seem especially tied to, like Lightning and Commando or Hope and Ravager.

Lightning gets 2, a Melee Ravager and Commando and XIII-2 really pushed that.
