Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

i'd actually love to see what taro would do if he were given helm of a mainline final fantasy. all i know is it would be batshit insane.

@27255 See how I specifically said "restart"? Trust me, I know all about how onerous it is to stat grind in Final Fantasy II. Also, if you look back over some of my previous posts in this thread, I do have a fondness for the story overall. Though admittedly, there are a couple of points where the writing is pretty cringe-worthy (those flippin' squirrels).

In regards to grinding overall... eh, it always feels to me like early-game grinding was a thing for the first five FF games. VI and VII did away with early grinding, but double-downed on mid-to-late game grinding (hold on, off to the Veldt to teach esper spells without risking level-ups while equipped with ones that don't give stat boosts).

@27260 They announced something that wasn't a remake, but they didn't say "no sequel." Part of me suspects Bravely Second will get an official announcement and maybe release date.

@27263 But we both know that they'll never give Hrist her own game.

Please don't let it be FFX-3, please don't let it be FFX-3.

(I really think that FFX shouldn't have gotten a sequel, even with the job system, much less a sequel-to-that-sequel)

Seriously, the only thing I like about FFX-2 is that it had the job system.

[down] I completely forgot about that song...

I don't mind X-2 existing, if only because we got this out of it. Say what you want about the game itself, that song is one of the strongest compositions in FF.

I've found that Final Fantasy X-2 is a pretty fun game if you pretend that it's a completely new IP that just happens to have a world that looks like Spira and characters that have the same names and faces as ones from Final Fantasy X. It's not an all-timer, but it's fun enough. It's only when you start actually treating it like a sequel to FFX that you start bashing your head against the wall.

I actually liked FFX-2. It was completely different, yes, and it was a bit too wacky at times, but overall I thought it was a pretty good game.

I think X-2 is a fine sequel to X. It can be kind of embarassing sometimes, but overall I enjoy it. Certainly much more than I do Crisis Core.

FFX-2 has grown on me as time goes on. The first time I played it ~4 years ago, a friend and I played it pretty much just to laugh at it. But I genuinely enjoy it now, mainly because the battle system is a lot of fun and silly as the plot is there are some fun moments.

I was playing it a couple of weeks ago on an old file, actually, and put Paine in the Songstress dressphere just for a laugh. I'm pretty sure at one point during battle she said "I hate this dressphere."

Xenogears was rejected as FFVII because it was "too dark." So I don't see Taro getting his hands on an FF any time soon.

@ X-2 Talk:

X-2 is not a perfect game by any means but it being the complete antithesis of X was clearly intentional. As the first real sequel to an FF game, it had to be daring. How best to accomplish that? Reject the main theme of the last game, create an entirely different tone for the world and make the lead character way different.

The fact is, X-2 does make a lot of sense. Yuna has been spending most of her life under the belief she'd die very early. So now she can finally live her own life, she's....well, living her own life. She's doing what she wants for once.

X-2 is Yuna's Teenage Rebellious Phase. She should have gotten a tattoo and started smoking too but I guess that be a bit much...

And the world as a whole is naturally more cheery than when everyone was afraid of the Death Whale coming any moment now. But, and this is one of the more substantive parts of X-2's story that I appreciate, a lot of the cheery stuff is just a facade. You can't undo a thousand-year-old theocracy that regimented every facet of life and expect things to just fall neatly into place in a couple years. New Yevon, representing people who just can't deal with how fast things are changing, really spoke to me. It's not easy to give up everything you believed in.

Youth League meanwhile is kinda right there in the title. Of course the young people can more readily accept the changes and are pissed off that others can't.

The two groups nearly having a civil war made a lot of sense to me.

In the end, passed all the fanservice, passed Brother's and Rikku's tragic drug addiction, passed all the minigames, X-2 is a fun game with a lot of intriguing ideas. It certainly made Yuna a much more likable protagonist in my opinion.

And we must never, ever forget Paine and her sexy voice and look. I wish her VA was in more things....

But fuck 100% and fuck the so-called "Good Ending." Normal Ending is the only way to go.

Just my attempt at humor while also trying to account for why both of them are batshit insane in the game while they were reasonably reserved in X.

Rikku might have been the token Genki Girl in X but she was actually pretty intelligent and calm most of the time. In X-2...well, poopie.

A metaphor I came up with to describe the difference between X and X-2 is that X is like Yuna's junior year of high school, all work and seriousness to reach a goal (although with a little bit of fun), whereas X-2 is Yuna on spring break in her freshman year of college (which gets ruined when someone who looks like her dead ex shows up).
