Ooh, ooh, I have!

Putting it simply, you very much heard correctly. Whereas the film was a largely family oriented action adventure cartoon with a noir gimmick, the book is a darkly comedic cynical pulp noir with the gimmick being that it's centered around cartoon characters. Aside from the base premise of "Grumpy Private Dick reluctantly agrees to help a cartoon rabbit prove he was framed for murder", the stories are starkly different experiences.

Just for starters, Roger fucking dies in the opening act. The rabbit that accompanies Valiant for the rest of novel is what's called "a doppel", short for doppelganger. Essentially a glorified clone toons make to use as stunt doubles for certain scenes.

Yes, I recommend the Lost in Adaptation video on it.

Funnily enough, the author actually preferred the movie so much that he wrote a sequel that retcons the entire first book as a dream.

In fact, I think Gary Wolf's only criticism with the film was he didn't like the Pig Head sequence being cut. As weird as that scene is, Wolf felt it added more mystique to Jessica and made it seem like she and Doom are working together when they're not.

Speaking as an author, I suspect financial motives MAY have played a role.

But you can't speak as THAT author.

Something else I just realized,Rodger's car is the one the few cartoon cars to be fully animated when vehicles would otherwise be heavily rotoscoped in.

[up] Probably because rotoscoping over an actual car would have made Benny too stiff as a character.

Odd confession: Lena Hyena scared me more than Judge Doom did.

Although the shoe dipping scene and Doom's reveal as a toon are close seconds for the title of scariest scene, I still found Lena more disturbing even with her very short screentime.

I'm kind of shy, and I've realized recently that I don't like physical touch a lot, so the thought of a total stranger being so aggressively affectionate (the moment they see you, no less) really creeps me out.

I can't bring myself to be too afraid of Christopher Lloyd. Every time he speaks, in any role, all I can think of is the Hacker.

He may be a giant, nightmarish brute, but like all villains in this series,he sure can sing.

[up] I can't hear Christopher Lloyd without thinking of Doc Brown.

I will admit though, to me Judge Doom is one of few roles where I feel Lloyd really absorbed. As a kid I didn't realize that was him, although upon finding out, it's blatantly obvious.

One of the things that's great about Doom is that he has trouble resisting the toon tropes. Like when he lets Eddie and Roger go along with the whole bit with the drink, even though Eddie's obviously up to something.

He can't even resist the Shave And A Haircut bit. Note that he starts singing to the beat at the end. He would have finished it if Roger hadn't done it for him.

It's such a great bit of foreshadowing. The first time around, you could easily assumed with everything we've seen about dib that it's also harmful to humans, just not as much as to toons, and that's why he's backing up. But then the reveal happens.

Even his murder of Eddie's brother Teddy fit toon tropes. Specifically the Rule of Funny that all Toons follow. He killed Teddy by dropping a piano on him. That's the kind of gag that's Black Comedy in toons, but very lethal to humans. And you gotta admit...it is kind of a funny way to die.

[up]The trope page also noted that Judge Doom never blinks once. Christopher Lloyd was pretty committed to that. This foreshadows that Doom's human eyes are fake.

It's also why Eddie's Freudian Excuse is less ridiculous than most. It's ridiculous that prejudice is created by one person affecting one's opinion of an entire group but it being so 'tooney' is going to screw with Eddie's perception of them as a whole.

Because quite a few toons do have a psychotic streak if it's funny.

See Bugs and Mickey, two otherwise great guys.

It's just...well, Eddie gave them an opening for a Black Comedy joke and they cant resist it with the spare tire.
