Editing Improvements & Changes

Go To

So after getting this wishlist request i thought maybe the Edit history and possibly the Edit Page features need more updating? The editors are the backbone of TV Tropes after all so i wanted to get some community feedback if the editors are wanting/needing any features to make the process easier or more efficient. Please let me know below.

Potential Upcoming Changes:

  • Recent edits for troper link to actual edit instead of just the page.
  • Add notifier for new edits of Followed pages.
  • Randomizer Tool for Wick Checking: Wish
  • Edit inactivity timer: if a user edit locks a page and does absolutely nothing for several minutes it will give a warning and then after several more minutes will auto-expire the lock so others may edit the page.
  • Unclosed markup tags “eating” pages. Bug
  • Make Edit Reasons mandatory for larger edits? (Needs crowner)
  • Make Edit reasons appear in Preview mode
  • Ways to detect Edit Wars and/or pop-up warning. Wish

[up][up]The latter wouldn't be of any use for rogue launches, since those are instant-suspension offenses. And technically, it wouldn't be useful either for stealth launches, given the possibility of the pages themselves being unlaunched and thus the link at the end of the message taking the editor to a blank/cut page.

EDIT: My bad. I misread the post as if it referred to Issue Helpers. I'm dumb.

[down]Just realized.

The gradient seems to be only on night-vision, and I agree, it looks really bad and blocks most of the options.

I think "Incorrect namespace or Namespace change" might be a useful pre-set edit reason as well.

[up] Recently, A lot of pages originally in the Useful Notes namespace, like the ones for video game consolses or pages about the eras of Super Hero comics, have been moved to the new Platform and Media Notes namespaces and because of that, various wicks for these pages in the Useful Notes namespace need to have their namespace changed.

I think a broader "The page was moved/renamed" would be more useful and is what many certain cleanups are doing.

It has occured to me that citing Overly Long Pages on the too-long banner would be a good idea as it points to the relevant cleanup in case the troper can't help the page right away

Some thoughts I have on the current editing interface:

  • I personally think having to scroll thought the selection of common edit reasons in a box is awkward. A dropdown menu that allows a user to select multiple options could be a way to keep things from getting too cumbersome as more edit reasons are added, though I understand that this would take additional time to develop.
  • The top of the edit screen showing the name of the page being edited as Namespace / PageName is nice. However, if it were instead displayed as Namespace/PageName (without spaces around the slash) it could make crosswicking efforts easier though being able to copypaste the connected page's name directly instead of having to grab it from the page URL or another text entry field.
  • Suggestions for additional edit reasons (wording tentative):
    • Swapping/moving over contents of a sandbox (for things like CM/MB page updates and creating work pages from sandboxes)
    • Indexing (for... placing pages on indexes)
  • I presume that the "General clarification on work content" edit reason is what we're supposed to use when we're adding more context, but the wording has never made me feel entirely sure about that.

I don't actually have any Bumblebee icons, I just think the nickname is funny.

I think a broader "The page was moved/renamed" would be more useful and is what many certain cleanups are doing.

I agree, and since there's been discussion about linking pre-written edit reasons to the relevant policy pages, such as linking the edit reason for removing sinkholes to Administrivia.Sinkhole, I think it would make sense to link the word "renamed" to Administrivia.Renamed Tropes.

I also agree with having a pre-written edit reason for page moves in general instead of just for namespace changes (or at the very least, I don't think the latter would be necessary if we had the former).

Can we get a common edit reason to be correcting slash troping? I've run into many pages that put two tropes on the same line and add this when I split them up.

I've run across a couple people who were confused about what the edit reason "Trope was cut/disambiguated due to cleanup" is supposed to mean and mistakenly used it to indicate that they were removing examples for any reason, such as "trope is being misused" or "moving examples to another page".

To make it clearer, maybe something like:

  • Trope page no longer exists; it was cut/disambiguated due to cleanup
  • Trope page was cut/disambiguated due to cleanup and no longer exists
or just
  • Trope page no longer exists

"Trope was cut/disambiguated due to cleanup" is inaccurate in the first place because TRS action isn't a cleanup.

"Trope page no longer exists" also feels slightly inaccurate in case of disambiguation, as the page would remain but not for the trope

Maybe rather "Trope no longer exists due to being cut/disambiguated". Stronger focus on trope losing trope status and removing all-purpose "cleanup" phrasing.

I wrote "trope page" because of cases of disambiguation. Sometimes the trope concept remains, but is given a new name. In those cases, the old page may remain, but is no longer a trope page.

It sort of harkens back to the debate on if disambiguation counts as a cut.

[up] Wait, there's a debate on that? I thought it was agreed that disambig'd is just a type of cut.

It tends to come up sometimes in TRS if voting to "cut" and "disambig" are the same. Not exactly the same issue happening here, but it stems from people thinking that if the page exists it's not a cut.
