"Double standard" rape

I was thinking to post this on Trope Repair Shop but i decided to go here.

Basically these tropes are about if a woman commits rape, or a man is getting raped, then it is Black Comedy Rape. But if a man rapes a woman then it is Rape as Drama. However, many examples seem to misuse it. Example:

  • Swordfish has Gabriel force Hollywood hacker Stan at gunpoint to comply with the parameters of a Secret Test of Character: as a female escort gives him the oral part of the exam, he has to hack into the DoD mainframe in 60 seconds or die. Stan is quite upset (about being fooled by The Dragon's empty gun) but he gets over it pretty quickly.

The problem with this example is that the film has no woman character being sexually assaulted, nor any mention/discussion about it. So how can we call it a "double standard"? There is no telling if it would be any different if the roles were reversed.

Before this discussion occurs, I want to make note of the history of these tropes.

The old names for these tropes were variations on "Rape Is OK If It's X (on Y)". Due to being partially responsible for issues with advertisers that nearly killed our site, they were given their current names.

I am mentioning this because this decision is important to know when deciding what to do here.

As for TRSing this, make sure:

  • That you have done a wick check that definitively proves a large amount of misuse
  • That you have a clear solution in mind once this is done, and
  • Technically optional, but if you find a problem, and want to bring this to TRS, you might want to use the TRS Queue for your thread.

These are Tropes in Aggregate, meaning that by themselves the incidents aren't noteworthy, but taken together they form a pattern. The double standard is that a similar scene in another work would've portrayed that scene differently if the genders were reversed.

In fact, the fact that most of these works don't depict women getting raped by men is sort of proof in and of itself. It's treated so seriously that it can't be depicted without turning the work into something much darker. The other scenarios though? Fair game, apparently.
