Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

My second Moriarty the Patriot guy. From “A Scandal In British Empire” arc, which introduces Bond and deals with documents which reveal the truth of the French Revolution. And their author.

Who is Maximilien Robespierre? What has he done?

Architect of French Revolution, once young lawyer from small French providence, he rose into cruel leader who threw newly reformed France in a bloody rein of fear and death until he became final victim of bloodshed. But there is more to the story, for you see it wasn’t his true name, nor was he even French!

His real name was Sherrinford Holmes.

Ancestor of Holmes brothers, Sherrinford was agent of British crown meant to menage social experiment intent to show what would happen when power was suddenly and forcibly seized from a crown and given to people. He traveled to Paris under identity of Maximilien Robespierre, becoming one of architects of the French revolution. Unfortunately, while revolution went off, Robespierre decriying nobles as a source of all country’s problems led to populace demanding execution of all nobles.

After getting order to rectify situation Robespierre thought for a long time and eventually came up with a solution, create new enemy for people to turn their anger towards. That enemy was Robespierre himself, leading to Reign of Terror. Starting the Cult of Supreme Being and declarating himself its prophet, he led revolution into executing everybody who protested violence, claiming lives of nobles and commoners alike by the guilotine. Speaking seeming nonsense about traitors in revolution mists, he was actually provoking leadership into executing him. Until eventually they did and Reign of Terror and revolution ended with death of greatest revolutionary.

Is he magnificent?

Oh yes. Guy is credited as main mastermind of French Revolution and thought it did get out of control, it was something acknowelged as never done before with unpredictable conceguences and he ultimately regained control with Reign of Terror.

One thing to truly adress was fact that we really don’t see much of him personally just few still picture and him and panel of thinking what to do before coming up with the Zero-Approval Gambit and brief anime exclusive scene of him going out with smile. However, disscusion Moriarty brothers and his descendant Microft have about him give us apt description of his thought proces, personality and planning, enought for me to he is characterised enough for this.

Is he bastard?

Yeah, his organised bloody revolution and Reign of Terror that followed. But he geniunely did letter to prevent futher bloodshed agains innocent nobles and was fully villing himself and give his own life to end violence for good.

Conclusion?

Keep him.

Hey I have a possible MB from a game that I beat not too long ago and enjoyed.

What's the work?

Like a Dragon: Ishin! is a spin-off of the Like a Dragon series which is set in the Bakumatsu era of Japan. It follows Sakamoto Ryōma (portrayed here by series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu) as he travels to Kyo (the city which is now known as Kyoto) to search for the man who killed his father figure, and it even takes some liberties in the story rather than following the actual historical events such as having Ryoma join The Shinsengumi under the alias of Saito Hajime.

Who is the character?

Kondo Isami is the chief of the Shinsengumi, which was previously known as the Miburoshigumi. Alongside Kondo in the Shinsengumi are his allies Hijikata, and Serizawa Kamo, Hirayama Goro and Hirama Jusuke, the latter three changing their names to Inoue Genzaburo, Okita Soji and Nagakura Shinpachi respectively after they murder the men who originally used those names. Eventually Kondo grew apart from the Shinsengumi and started to appear less in person, leaving Hijikata, who has become the Shinsengumi's deputy chief, to effectively handle most of the work.

Sakamoto Ryoma eventually joins up with the Shinsengumi (under the alias of Saito Hajime, as I said previously) due to wanting to find the man who assassinated his adoptive father, Yoshida Toyo, and the Shinsengumi were known for practicing the style of Tennen Rishin, which Ryoma identified as the same as the style the mysterious masked man who murdered Toyo.

Eventually, Ryoma meets with Kondo in Gion, where Kondo reveals he is aware of Ryoma's true identity. He further tells Ryoma that his goals are to move the Emperor and relocate the capital of Japan from Kyo to Edo (which we know nowadays as Tokyo), where the Bakufu are located, which would reduce the amount of power that the Tosa Loyalists have and prevent them from starting a civil war. However, Kondo's plan involves having the Shinsengumi burn down the city of Kyo as well as the Imperial Court, which caused Ryoma to oppose the idea due it causing needless deaths. Kondo baits Ryoma into fighting him by tempting him with the possibility that he was Toyo's killer, but after their battle Ryoma concludes he was not Toyo's killer due to Kondo being much weaker than the masked man. Before leaving, Ryoma states he still plans to look for his adoptive father's killer and thus he is going to remain being part of the Shinsengumi.

After Inoue was murdered, Ryoma learns from Okita that Inoue was in fact the man who killed Toyo. Kondo arrives at the scene and confrims this information and tells Ryoma about Inoue, Okita and Nagakura and their original names. It is implied that Inoue felt remorse for his murder and that is why he sliced other Shinsengumi member Matsubara when he was going to reveal the truth of "Saito Hajime". Kondo reveals that he was aware of Ryoma's identity because Inoue ratted him out, but also he reveals that Inoue said the name of the mastermind that ordered Toyo's killing was also called Sakamoto Ryoma, which Ryoma realises must be referring to his impostor (who is in truth his adoptive brother who was thought to be dead, Takechi Hanpeita, leader of the Tosa Loyalists).

Later, Kondo meets Ryoma and he tells him that false Sakamoto Ryoma is about the start a national civil war. After the real Ryoma settles a long-standing grudge between Saigo Kichinosuke of the Satsuma Domain and Katsura Kogoro of the Choshu Loyalist Party, causing them to come together and form the Satcho Alliance, the fake Ryoma took advantage of them and is planning to use them in his plans of a civil war, putting them directly against the Bakufu. Kondo reveals he is going to execute his plan to set fire to the Imperial Court. Ryoma of course opposes the idea again and then suggests them putting and end to the Bafuku instead of the Satcho. Initially shocked by the idea, Kondo eventually agrees to the idea as he realises that if there was one man who could suggest the Bafuku to surrender for the sake of the country, it would be Ryoma. The two arrange a plan, that Ryoma will sneak into Edo Castle and will convince the shogun to Abdicate the Throne. Kondo writes a letter for the shogun that details his plan for a "Great Restoration", and eventually Ryoma reaches the shogun and gives him the letter, which he reads and agrees to Kondo's plans.

Unfortunately, Takechi Hanpeita throws a wrench in Kondo's plans by ordering the Shinsengumi to set fire to Kyo, under the pretense that it was Kondo's orders, and Kondo is fatally attacked by Takechi's right-hand man, Okada Izo. In Kondo's dying words he states that the Tosa Loyalists will kill the Emperor of Japan and frame Kondo for it, in turn causing a war between the Bakufu and the Imperial Court. He then hands Ryoma a blood-stained letter, calling it his final move.

So, what was Kondo's final move? It was for Hijikata to arrange a meeting for the Shinsengumi, which in truth was to reveal the plans of Ito Kashitaro, who clearly wants to become the Shinsengumi chief by any means necessary. Hijikata decides to name Saito/Ryoma the next Shinsengumi captain, prompting Ito to say it should be him instead, saying that in light of Kondo's death it would be wrong for the Shinsengumi's reputation to fall any further, and thus as chief he would prevent that from happening. However, Hijikata catches him out as he never said that Kondo was killed. Hijikata, Ryoma, Nagakura and Okita raise their swords at Ito, causing Todo Heisuke to shoot a gun upwards which allows Ito to escape and he reveals that, alongside Todo and Takeda Kanryusai, he had formed his own group known as the Goryo-Eji. However Todo is in truth a Reverse Mole who is working with Hijikata, and was made to ally with Ito by Kondo in hopes of figuring out Ito's true motivations. Todo finds out the one Ito is connected to is none other than the impostor Ryoma, who he also learns is planning to have a meeting with Saigo of the Satsuma and Katsura of the Choshu. This means Ryoma and his allies know who the players are all because of Kondo's plan, and plan to host a meeting in a new building known as Omiya so the true players can show their faces.

What makes him magnificent? Kondo is easily one of the smartest characters in the game, being cunning enough to not only snuff out that Ito is a traitor but also who he is affilliated with thanks to the help of Hijikata and Todo. Plus. while it was a gamble he ends up being responsible for the Meiji Restoration of Japan due to him sending Ryoma to hand over his idea of said restoration to the shogun. While Ryoma's plans of holding a meeting in Omiya end up failing due to Takechi's schemes, this isn't a problem on Kondo's end as by that point he is dead and has done all he can do and isn't the one doing the planning anymore in the first place, plus he has already get one over on Takechi by getting the shogun to agree to his plans of a restoration. So yeah, I think he is magnificent enough.

Is he a bastard? Too much of one? Kondo is the leader of the Shinsengumi, a group known as the "Mibu Wolves" and for their sheer brutality, such as executing anyone who dare betray them on the spot. And if that isn't shady enough for you, then his original plan of setting Kyo on fire so that the Emperor can move to Edo should be enough. But being too bad is definitely not a concern as Kondo at his worst is a Well-Intentioned Extremist and is overall on the heroes' side

Verdict?

Not 100% sure on him, so I'll leave it to you.

Hello again everyone! I'm back with yet another candidate, this is admittedly a little sooner than I expected, but this is a character that's been on my mind for a good while now, and after some recent discussions I've decided to try it out. This is gonna be a bit of a throwback for me as this was actually the first ever candidate I proposed on the CM Thread, so it'll be interesting to see how this goes.

What Is The Work?

"Entropy of Vengeance" is a Minecraft Song created by The Man Be His La. It focuses on the Wither boss and more specifically, how it came to be. The video itself follows the Wolf, who finds himself mingling with a cult aiming to bring upon "the hour of the end" and achieve vengeance against the player who had abandoned them oh so long ago. Meeting with one of its leaders, the Zombie, the Zombie manages to convince the Wolf to betray his player and help them create the Wither. Upon doing so, the Zombie, Wolf, and Wither Skeleton, form together with the other dozens of souls to form the Wither before attacking the player's current residence, slaughtering other players before eventually killing their former master, ending the song.

Who Is The Zombie? What Has He Done?

The Zombie is the deuteragonist of this music video. Being one of the leaders of the cult aiming to create the Wither, the Zombie has the Wolf invited to his home base where he would proceed to reveal his plans of multiversal genocide while trying to convince the Wolf to join them. Initially unconvinced, the Zombie reminds the Wolf of the fact that their player abandoned them, that he abadnoned them and left them to rot. Managing to be convinced by such, the Wolf forms together with the Zombie and the Wither Skeleton to become the Wither, managing to achieve revenge on the one that wronged them and possibly more, the Zombie managing to succeed in his goals by the end of the music video.

Is He Magnificent?

Well he certainly has the smarts for it. For as monsterous as he is, he does have a point about the player abandoning everyone and he uses that exact logic to convince the Wolf to join them, which works perfectly. And all the while he keeps a smug, yet confident attitude, never breaking character and always having a smile on his face. Despite the smugness though, he isn't so overly confident to the point where it screws him up or makes him unlikable, he's still plenty charming and as I said, uses understandable logic to lure the Wolf into his plans. Beyond all of that though, it's also said that he was the one to create the Wither in the first place, showing that he has technical prowess, which certainly helps his case. In general, despite his smug and confident attitude, he's still very charming and doesn't let it get in the way of his intelligence.

Is He a Bastard?

This one's easy. The Zombie straight up states, point blank, that he wants to destroy the multiverse, and this isn't some weightless statement either, considering the carnage that he would go onto commit through the Wither, talking about "complete ensnaring despair" later in the video, and the Wolf also saying that they have a "game to dismantle" above all of that though, the end of the music video also shows him, as the Wither alongside the Wolf and Wither Skeleton, invading the player's living space, killing two players, and the ending it off by killing the one who left them behind in the first place. He's also behind the Wolf's Face–Heel Turn, turning him from an innocent pet, to a willing participant in the destruction of Minecraft, safe to say he has the baddie criteria covered. With all that said however, that does leave one problem, and I'm sure you can already guess what it is.

Is He Too Much of a Bastard?

The Zombie is a nasty piece of work, he's an Omnicidal Maniac, has a cult that has mobs sacrifice themselves to him so that he can create the Wither, laid waste to at a mimimum of three players once entering their player's residence, and has no redeeming qualities to speak of. So considering all of that... he sounds too bad for the trope right? Well that's what I though too, however giving it more thought, I think this is a case of "censorship" holding this back from being too vile. While the multiversal genocide line does have enough weight behind it for him to pass the baseline, we still never actually see this multiversal carnage in action, it's only said as something that he plans to do. As for him massacring the player's home? While that is pretty bad, it isn't shown in overly gritty detail. The only things we see is a player flopping over dead, another one being blown up with only a puddle of blood being left behind, and their final kill isn't even shown on screen, instead we just see the player's sword fall into the dirt alongside a puddle of blood. Now yes, the blood does sound concerning, but remember that this is a Minecraft music video, none of what is shown in this final scene is overly graphic, and the more violent kills are only shown on screen for a few seconds. None of what we see is overly graphic or stomach churning. Plus it helps that this seen is played dramatically as opposed to for horror. As for the mob sacrifice thing? Well it's now like the Zombie is actually forcing anyone to do anything, the music video makes it clear that the mobs are doing this by their own choice and hell, the Zombie can't even force them from what we can tell considering he had to convince the Wolf to join him in the first place. Plus we never actually see the sacrificing process on screen, only the aftermath where we see a bunch of mob heads behind the Zombie, which again, isn't really all that graphic due to this being a Minecraft music video. So overall, while his crimes are certainly bad, I feel they are kept from being too awful due to the nature of the music video being about Minecraft.

Verdict?

Up to you

Going with a no on the Zombie. When it comes to Omnicidal MBs they need to have a VERY good reason to go about something that devastating. In essence, the slaughter needs to be a pragmatic reason to fulfill another goal, the mass-murder can't be the primary goal here or it takes away from their magnificence and it paints them as "needlessly/pointlessly cruel".

And even with the current Omnicidal CM-MB crossovers, they tend to max out at a planet. We're talking about not only universal but multiveral carnage here. That is way too over the top for a MB, esp. without any Well-Intentioned Extremist shades to soften the nastiness.

Yes to the Moriarty the Patriot guys and Kondo but definite no to the Zombie. Even beyond the Omnicidal Maniac mass murder from a CM can push someone too far for bastard. It's why I didn't do the anime version of Satō, who instead of attacking various targets with fighter jets like in the manga, tries to wipe out Japan with poison gas... he's cool, he's brilliant, he's charming and he's badass but that's just awful to the point I can't justify it and we've cut cool CMs before for going too far, this is another such case to me.

Though his homosexuality has been used to blackmail him into cooperation with the Soviets, Larrick quickly establishes that he has in no way taken this lying down, flatly admitting that he had been meticulously planning the assassination of his handlers before another party beat him to the punch. Subsequently coming under the Jennings' control, Larrick sees through all their efforts to monitor him and defeats a rogue operative seeking to kill him for the atrocities committed by Contras he trained, using her life as leverage to secure his release from the KGB's service. However, when the Jennings unwittingly kill his friends, a vengeful Larrick methodically tracks down and eliminates several of their allies in order to draw out and ambush them, intent on arresting the pair before turning himself in to atone for his crimes.

Yes to Kondo. No to Zombie.

Would this quote work?

"I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you...and I will kill you."
