One thing you must learn, my friend, is that magic is real. In fact, it's more than just real, it's a way of life.

You can't go into a village, a city, a kingdom, anything without seeing magic getting flung around. Flames and ice, metal walls being constructed, hell even food being created from the magical energies that course through your system! Only, you know, we take that quite literally.

You see, magic actually comes from our Familiars. Little pieces of our souls that break away from us and kind of...grow, alongside us. The concentrated little ball of energy is us and we are them, and they are made out of a specialized Mana that the magic comes from.

Each one is unique to the person. A construction worker who can control the earth itself may have his Familiar as a mole made out of dirt and earth. A young woman who controls the trees and plants around her may have a rabbit made out of grass and flowers. A fire warlock may have a fire dog. The ideas are unique per person, each one wild, varying, and majestic!

But it's never that easy, actually. Controlling Mana like that is difficult, and your little friend knows just about as much as you. in order to prevent there from being some kind of magical backlash that completely destroys your village and everything you care about, we have...

Notus Academy.

Notus Academy helps the youth, the next generation, on how to not only handle their magic, but their Familiar to grow stronger as well! In our illustrious halls, you'll find yourself becoming a master of your craft, wherever you may end up being. So come, enter that doorway, and let's find your destiny...

Together.

...

Hello, and welcome to Notus Academy, a Magical themed Roleplay with light elements of Black Clover sprinkled throughout.

The roleplay takes place on the continent of Xyalc (Zee-Al-ack), with the center of the Continent proudly holding the Notus Academy for all future magic users to attend. Xyalc is a massive continent and holds many, many, many different ecosystems, biome and even more villages, towns, kingdoms, and everything in the middle. The entire thing is a blank page so if there's anything you want to create, congrats, it's canon now!

You'll be playing the students of Notus Academy, as you learn alongside your Soul Familiar and your Classmates, as you all discover what you're meant to be.

Black Clover is a huge inspiration here, as the magic can be almost ANYTHING you can think of. From the basic elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Wind), to the less known (Darkness, Metal, Wood), to the downright odd (Sound, food, Slime). Your Soul Familiar is made of the element in question, or maybe something similar. The options are quite limitless. And as they grow with you, they'll grow even stronger and unlock better, more powerful magics...

  • Name: Reitt Blensevich
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: A handsome and powerfully built if stocky young man, Reitt has black hair, broad and strong features, bright blue eyes that seem rather deeply set, giving him a rather intimidating looking appearance when angered. He dresses in a black and gray blade pattern vest, a short sleeved shirt, and a black jacket with a chain across the neck area with a magic crystal of some kind at the middle, and gray slacks, his boots apparently being made of actual tanned, formerly living thing leather. Reitt is somewhat pale, and he has an odd black tattoo on the back of his left hand.
  • Personality: Cocky and charming if cold, Reitt Blensevich is the middle child of his family, the "famous" Blensevich Family - and it shows in his attitude. He very eagerly plays the part of the Handsome Lech, wanting to stand out from his brothers - his older brothers in particular he believes overshadow him significantly. And Reitt absolutely hates being overshadowed. He's something of a heel when it comes to fighting to use a certain term - he gloats, he uses rather frightening creatures made using his magic, and doesn't screw around using anything less than what he thinks is necessary. Reitt's Jerk Jock act comes complete with three friends of his who function as his mooks, though he cares for them more than he lets on - and certainly far more than he'd ever admit, which in general applies to people he likes. Reitt is very keen to avoid embarrassment, and is deathly afraid of potentially making his family look bad.
  • Magic: Darkness Construct Magic: Reitt is capable of either shaping darkness into various golems, weaponry and armor / personal reinforcement for himself.
  • Soul Familiar: Belphegor, the Sleepy Devil
  • Familiar Appearance: He takes on the form of a red eyed Jacob Ram with bat wings, usually manifests a pillow for him to rest his head on. He even occasionally adds "Baaaa" noises to his speech due to his form.
  • Familiar Personality: Belphegor has an odd situation going on - he's very intelligent, but he absolutely never takes anything seriously, prefers sleeping, and doing his own thing above all else. He always tries to come up with an excuse to not do something directly himself, though he usually gives exactly as much as necessary and never more when Reitt asks him for some info. He'll always advocate for relaxation and calm if possible, to make it easier for him to snooze.
  • Magic Known:
    • Shadow-Shape Theurgia: Shapes his darkness magic into his weapons or armor. Notably has an unholy element.
    • Shadow-Shape Lemegeton: Creates a darkness magic golem to fight on his behalf. Has a variety of designs according to whatever Reitt wants to emphasize. Always has a weakspot on the upper back.
  • Backstory: Reitt is the middle child of the Darkness Magic using Blensevich Family, a famously ambitious magic using family - and just as infamous for why they all tend to use varying flavors of Darkness magic, with their Familiars mostly turning out as dark creatures and in the case of the main family, even having that important part of themselves become part of a Devil. A long time ago, the Blensevich Family faced two problems - an old family adversary who threatened to kill them, and a Devil yearning for a fight. The Blensevich Family patriarch at the time agreed to an Enemy Mine Deal with the Devil, tying the Blensevich Bloodline to the Dark and trending them toward that spectrum of magic. In the course of the battle, the Blensevichs impressed their dark ally with their skill, bravery and guile. While the family chased off their adversary, few were willing to forget the fact the Blensevichs did it with the assistance of such dark powers, resulting in distrust. In the modern day, the Blensevich Family is ambitious and desires to expand their influence any number of ways. Reitt despite his family's reputation started off as an earnest and very, very shy young man, before something ah, happened, that caused him to develop very differently. It could be he's just more rigorous about who he trusts now. Reitt himself is very testy about his family and their repute, and doesn't like relying on them at all.

Name: Vernon Carter

Age: 15

Appearance: Vernon is a pale, almost sickly, individual, with short black hair. He dresses slightly more formally than would be appropriate, though his clothes always seem ill-fitting regardless of their actual measurements. He is short of stature and not overly abundant in musculature.

Personality: Vernon is, despite himself, a fairly gregarious individual. He's no social butterfly, but he enjoys conversing with others especially on more academic subjects. As of late he has become a bit more withdrawn, concerned by the nature of his familiar.

Power: Primordial Void Manipulation, Vernon can warp space and probability through his link to the formless source of all being.

Soul Familiar: Blissful Oblivion

Familiar Appearance: Oblivion appears as a negative presence, a slight distortion in the space around it, trhough which a blank white nothingness can be glimpsed. He appears to be spherical but his radius varies, somethimes even constricting down into a single point.

Familiar Personality: Oblivion is a cryptic creature, preferring to communicate in the form of mentally projected impressions rather than speech. Vernon himself does not entirely understand its desires, it can be enraged by a thing one day and then be complegely indifferent to it the next, but it does tend to take actions that lead others to a sense of peace and serenity. It only speaks when tutoring Vernon in magic and its own bizarre philosophy. When it does speak, it often butchers grammar structures, especially tenses, referring to events that can never be or are from the distant future (these descriptions are too vague, and the events described are too far off for this to be useful, if they even occur at all). This makes interaction somewhat difficult in all on all but the most atemporal of subjects.

Magic Known:

  • Analyze Potential: Vernon can view the general direction a person or object is trending simply by looking at them. This doesn't yield very specific information, just the general feel of the individual.

  • Blink: Vernon can teleport short distances.

Backstory: Vernon was born in the Monolith, an immense spire built upon a riverbank. Despite its peculiarity, it is a large and diverse population center. Vernon's parents were both wealthy buisness people who made their fortunes moving in on the burgeoning shipping industry. They were always superficially kind to him, but somewhat resentful of his preference for academics over finance, and his refusal to associate with many of his peers. This gap has grown as of late with the manifestation of Vernon's familiar, which they find quite frankly disturbing, perhaps even irationally so. They have more or less sent him to the school because it is thebest way that they can get rid of him whilst keeping up appearances as a happy and successful family.

(tell me if I made his power set too vague. I wasn't quite sure how to do his concept without just reverting to The Power of the Void)

  • Name: Usami Rotum
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: Ready to soar. Occasionally uses her cloak and goggles to hide her Crisnian features, but usually leaves it draped over her wings. Stands at 5'6.
  • Personality: On the surface, Usami is cool, calm and collected, brimming with confidence. In truth, she's brash, cocky, and utterly clueless. She knows nothing about how the world works, making bold assumptions and rushing in where fools dare to tread. She always believes she's right, or pretends to. She's curious about everything, asking countless questions and sticking her nose into every nook and cranny. But all of this covers up an incredible amount of anxiety. She has no knowledge of the world or what's expected of her, and is afraid she'll be rejected if she can't fit in. A small part of her is scared silly and wants to go home, but if she does, she'll be stuck in the boonies with someone she doesn't care for. And there's that niggling fear of someone from Rustania seeing her and ruining everything. She feels trapped. But as long as a choice, she won't dare admit it.
  • Magic: Sand magic. Usami can create and control sand. She use it a variety of ways, from making shapes to creating blasts or whirlwinds.
  • Soul Familiar: Stormcrow.
    • Familiar Appearance: A large sandy crow. It's body is constantly shifting, grains of sand constantly swirling about like quicksand.
    • Familiar Personality: Stormcrow is Usami's opposite. Where Usami pretends to be confident, Stormcrow is confident. Where Usami is clueless, Stormcrow is wise. It sees what the sand sees, and the sand has seen much. They're the voice of reason, giving her sage wisdom and nuggets of common sense. But Usami laughs at common sense, always ignoring Stormcrow and making things worse. This has made them somewhat dour and sardonic, and they wish anyone else was their master.
  • Magic Known:
    • Sand Shape: Usami can shape her sand into various forms, from weapons or shield to large fists. She can't make them larger than herself, but that may change as she gets stronger.
    • Sand Blast: Usami can summon a blast of sand under her opponent, erupting from the ground like a geyser. Right now, she can only summon one at a time, but she's working to improve it.
  • Backstory: Usami was born in a small village in the mountains, off the outskirts of Rustam. Located in the deserts of Samursa, Rustam was a prestigious desert nation known for its trade skill, though their military was nothing to sneeze at. But the village of Crisna was a different story. The people of Crisna had long been outcasts, demonized for their bright red eyes and black wings. Rumour had it they were demon spawn, monsters created to bring down the kingdom and turn everyone to sin. Not even the Crisnians knew what the truth was, their earliest records lost to Rustamian raids and witchhunts. In the centuries since, many thought the Crisnians had gone extinct. A misconception the Crisnians were grateful for.
    • Usami grew up in a small but loving family. She loved her parents and older brother dearly, but didn't feel the same about their village. She didn't understand why they had stayed cooped up in the mountains or adhere to tradition. She knew about Rustam's hatred of Crisnia's, but it had been centuries since they came in contact, so maybe they'd be forgotten about them. But she had other concerns. Her parents were already planning to marry her off, setting her up with some doofus she'd barely met. He was nice enough, but he wasn't her type. Besides, she didn't want to get married, she wanted to see the world! Wasn't that enough?
    • But as the days went on, her parents kept insisting she get married despite her objections, and it was enough to make up her mind. In the dead of night, she packed her bags, flapping her wings and soaring off into the distance. Now that she was free, she wasn't sure where to go. Flapping about aimlessly, she spotted an abandoned campground. She floated down, scavenging the leftovers and searching for anything that looked useful. But it was near the smouldering remains of a campfire that she found her answer. It was a scroll, with directions for a place called Novus Academy. She wasn't sure what it was, but it had to be better than Crisnus. Clutching it in her talons, she took off, eager to discover what awaited her.

Name: Grace "Walking Disaster Magnet" Asher

Age: 19

Appearance:

She has black hair and purple eyes. Her hair is in a short boyish haircut. At 5'8" she's reasonably tall, but not super tall. Species wise, she looks like a human, and it is assumed she is one.

Her clothing wildly varies in terms of what it looks like (due to her magic!) but will always be practical. Now if it's fashionable... not always. Always wears a hooded cloak, pants and below the knee length leather boots no matter what outfit she has though. Her bag which carries her stuff is also not affected by said magic. She is physically fit as a result of not depending on magic.

She always has a knife and a sabre as well. These are just well made weapons that are neutral to her own magic. The sheaths and belts that attach those to her person are not affected by her magic. The weapons can be enchased with magic and be used to aim/boost her physical and magical attacks.

Personality: She likes order. Which is rather ironic and utterly lacking in her life. She is organized and a planner. Her backup plans have backup plans. Due to her magic, she is always prepared for the worst and thus has backup plans at all times. All of her planning and preparation is the only way she can have any semblance of order in her life. Is always trying to organize things when possible. But she knows when to pick her battles for everything, which is her motto for life. Resilient and stubborn, a necessity given her magic in order to get anything done. She is a weirdness magnet and is a walking disaster area as a person. She is a magnet for disasters!

Overall, someone who is just trying to make some order in her life when everything is out to make her life chaotic, including her own magic.

Magic: Discord magic. In simple terms. Manipulating order and chaos... which is not always in the castor's favor. This magic will simply cause more order/chaos and is difficult to control. This sounds strong on paper... if she could control it. Alas she can't (can BARELY control it, and it's more like pointing at where and what to target and hope for the best) and thus is constantly passively on befitting of it's nature. The hardest part is well making it work FOR her when she wants it too... which is almost never.

Due to this, she is careful about when to use her magic since it can and has backfired for her and her allies before. It is weak BECAUSE of the lack of control and unpredictability, but has high (and extremely hard to reach) potential.

Using ANY magic will result in a pathetic attack or a massive one. And she can't predict or control which one it will be. So she just casts with her hands and weapons (made to survive her magic!) due to her... magic's... many... effects... on other things... Until she learns/trains otherwise, this is a consistent effect.

NO ONE can predict the exact outcome of her magic useage, not even herself!

Soul Familiar: Chaotic dragon thingmajig (Grace does not know how to describe it).

Familiar Appearance: It will always look vaguely dragon like with wings and a tail. Though the rest of its look will wildly vary. Sometimes humanoid, sometimes not or in between that! The only consistent traits will be dragon wings, tail, and head. Everything else, well who knows. Also referred to as male for simplicity's sake. Size wise though, will always be something that will not imped nor aid Grace in whatever she is doing at the moment.

Familiar Personality: He represents the chaos that is Grace's magic. Favoring chaos, it serves to contrast Grace who represents the order. Despite their differences, he does get along with Grace and serves as the balance for her. Even his GENDER is the opposite of her! Doubling as the devil's (erm dragon) advocate, he frequently reminds her that no plan survives enemy contact (or her own magic!). He will only talk as needed or when asked which is also ironic given his chaotic nature.

Magic Known:

Change of order and chaos: Exactly what it says. It just causes a change in order and chaos of the general area she picks (She can control WHERE this happens/where it's centered at including herself). The exact changes are unknown to EVERYONE equally.

Chaotic mimicry: It's not actually copying others' magic but more like taking the magic already there and then using that as fuel to attack. It can be ANY other persons' magic being used. Though at first it can only combine up to 3 magic types at once. There is no way to reliably control what will be used magic wise OR what it will exactly do. But it will always be some sort of magic attack without fail. Sometimes some magics can combine the right (or wrong!) way and result in... interesting outcomes (read: Unstable magic mixtures go kaboom or other unpredictable effects). Effective ones? Up to the RNG gods!

Note that she can aim WHERE it goes and who to target, just not WHAT attack type it is.

Backstory:

The only reason her passive magic effect does not affect her is due to having a linage that gives her absurdly high mana reserves... with basically nothing for controlling her magic as a cost (like Noelle in her early days with her water magic had full control compared to Grace!). This does NOT help her deal with her already chaotic magic. As in casting anything can and will go wrong almost without fail. Even for the simplest spells.

When she got her magic, her life went from peaceful to chaotic to say the least. With her magic incontinence... well everyone is wary about having her around when order really matters. Needless to say, she has been kicked out of many, many, MANY gambling places... and is not allowed to be too close to one! Which is why she had a hard time fitting in. Her magic has never been in her favor in the long run and thus has made life tough. As a result, she is resilient and always ready for the worst.

Wherever she went, she caused disasters just by being there long enough. After accidently causing chaos in many different places she just stayed in her home town where she can't destroy it just by being there.

To make up for her unreliable magic, she uses more physical attacks. Close quarter fighting is something she's good at due to not being able to use magic without risk. As well as improvised weapons and sword fighting. A sabre suited her just fine after she picked one up during a fight and thus got the training to use it.

Where she lived, after she got her magic... they started preparing for the worst. Though no one blamed her for the chaos she caused. To avoid shunning her, they made the ENTIRE TOWN disaster resistant. Yes she unwillingly turned her town into a disaster magnet just by living there. Including the roads, and everything that could be reinforced several times over. They treated her equally and were the only ones to do so. Outside of the town she lived in, everyone else shunned her. She did not leave her hometown often due to this, and one day got a flyer for Notus Academy. The rest of the townsfolk encouraged her to attend so she could actually USE her magic properly and she did. The rest is history. Even now, she is still a disaster magnet... for everyone equally yet she will somehow always get out of the mess... somehow. Notus Academy is hopefully built with sturdy materials! For some reason though, she refuses to explain why she needs a hooded cloak year round...

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. And weasels. Those little bastards will get ya.

  • Name: Alexis 'Alex' Barrett
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: Alex is a tall and somewhat frail-looking young man, with pale skin that harkens to a life spent indoors, contrasted by black hair grown to the small of his back and usually tied up in a simple braid, and a pair of blue eyes. Though, his body isn't much exposed to others for scrutiny - he's almost always found in the same rough outfit. A simple pair of trousers and a plain shirt, with a pair of solid boots to walk in. Over all that, he has a long coat, reaching to his ankles, seemingly quite well-worn, and tailored with a large neck, loops and straps on the outside and netting on the inside to allow his familiar to navigate it with ease
  • Personality: Alex is a kind soul to a fault, above all. He's friendly and, while not exactly extroverted or outgoing - in fact, having a bit of a shy and easily flustered streak - wouldn't turn down the opportunity for new friends. That said, he struggles with issues of insecurity, causing him to tend towards under-appreciating his own abilities, whether or not they're actually up to par. He's also picked up a bit of a sarcastic streak, mostly to match wits with his familiar.
  • Magic: Primeval Chaos Magic, obviously a somewhat unpredictable branch of magic, not to mention at times highly destructive, warping and distorting reality and destabilizing matter.
  • Soul Familiar: 'Bastard', the Weasel
    • Familiar Appearance: At a glance, one might mistake Bastard for any old long-tailed weasel, though one who keeps his winter coat year-round. At a closer inspection, though, details like his eye color, little patterns in his white fur, and such little minutiae, all seem to subtly change whenever he dips out of sight, and more noticeably, he leaves a trail when he moves, where reality seems to briefly warp and sizzle, though it's only a visual effect. When agitated, that same effect appears around him like an aura.
    • Familiar Personality: Bastard is... Well, for lack of a better description, he earned his name for a reason. He's a rascal, a troublemaker, and has enough sarcasm in him for five people to share, spending about 80% of his time either snarking at Alex, messing with someone in the vicinity, or scheming to do one of the above. He's also more than a little brash - rest assured that if he has an opinion on a situation, you won't have the chance to miss it. Despite being a rascal, though, let no one tell you he isn't a dependable lil' rascal. No, seriously, don't. He'll correct you. Snarkily.
  • Magic Known:
    • Entropic Blast: With this power, Alex creates blasts that destabilize reality around them, disintegrating matter. At their most powerful, currently, they would be capable of disintegrating something the size of a football or so, though one of that amount of power would take a lot out of Alex to use.
    • Inscrutability: This magic allows Alex to shield himself from perception, both mundane and magical. At its weakest, it's able to slightly scramble people's perception of him - details such as accessories, eye color and the like will be observed differently from person to person, creating confusion when trying to identify him, and weak perceptive magic will return slightly inaccurate results. With more intense application, it's capable of entirely scrambling his appearance to outside observers, making him appear completely unrecognizable from his regular self - and its effect on clairvoyant magic is increased as well, causing such magic to return entirely nonsense random responses. For now, though, this more intense use of the power can only be sustained for maybe a minute, at most.
  • Backstory: For someone with such a chaotic power, there's not much out of the ordinary with the circumstances of Alex's birth. He was born to a wealthy noble lineage in a large town, and as a consequence, had very little to spend his younger years on. Very little, that is, except for one thing - educating himself. He would spend hours, days, at a time, immersed in written works of the past and present, the most modern sciences possible, so that even at a young age, he could make up for his frail physique with an impressive knowledge on a variety of topics. Though, this left him fairly sheltered from the realities of the world around him - a shelteredness that his parents, seeing his status as a prodigy, were all too willing to foster, convincing him that the world outside was beneath his worth. It lasted until a night, early in his teenage years, where, spurred on by his familiar, he snuck out in the early hours of the night. He was gone from home for a whole week, living among the common folk, and since then, his attitude never did recover, with the seed planted there instilling him with a great deal of humility - bordering on outright impostor-syndrome shame - about his intellect, and a sense of indebtedness to the poor and downtrodden, developing over the years. Eventually, his parents sent him to Notus Academy, killing two birds with one stone - getting him out of the way, and further developing both his magical and academic talent, hoping that he'd forget all about the nonsense generosity that had come over him.

  • Name: Aoife Ní Ciardha
  • Age: 18
  • Appearance: 6'5" tall. Dresses in rather expensive robes, which due to the wards placed on them remain as immaculate as can be. Long hair is almost always braided into a much shorter style than its true length. Ears are pointed at the tips in an upturned fashion, suggesting elvish heritage. Her retinas often reflect the light like that of a cat or a dog's eyes, and as such they tend to appear a luminous green that seem to glow in the dark.
  • Personality: Aoife is rather straightforward and down-to-earth, keeping herself composed for the most part in an effort to act more adult yet remaining humble enough to admit she has no idea what she's doing. Aoife often comes across as aloof and awkward in social situations, and feels much more comfortable in her studies of either culture or any potential magic that takes her fancy. This is to the point where she idealizes the fantasy of spend her entire afternoon perusing the nearest library, and ignoring any attempts to interrupt her during it. However, she still finds herself in situations where she has to acknowledge her contemparies, and while not unpleasant in conversation it's clear she tries her best to wriggle out of them as soon as she possibly can.
  • Magic: Fire, for all that encompasses. Not just typical fire, but any other variation thereof: obviously given suitable time to learn and train with the correct spells, Aoife can theoretically wield anything from ordinary destructive fire to the likes of healing fire in much the same way. Her spells are currently limited to only one of each extreme, but she holds onto the hope of developing past a mere one-(or two)trick pony.
  • Soul Familiar: Aed, Mote of Flame.
  • Familiar Appearance: Aed is little more than a pair of metallic discs orbiting around a nucleus of fire, hovering by its own accord near to Aoife in a perpetual fashion. It flares whenever Aoife uses it to channel her spells, opening up into an exposed ‘attack mode’ when active and closing into its regular orbital configuration whenever passive. The flame within it bulges slightly whenever it whispers, pulsating in accordance with its words and even dimming to signify disappoint or sadness.
  • Familiar Personality: Aed is a benevolent entity, having the persona of a motherly figure in regards to Aoife and regularly reminding her of things she's in fact all too aware of. In contrast to its charge's more serious countenance, Aed regularly attempts to lighten the mood through quips and ‘clever’ observations, which more often causes eye-rolling than even so much as a snort from Aoife. Despite its friendliness and polite sensibilities, Aed is incredibly protective of Aoife, and eagerly fights alongside her as a conduit for her destructive abilities.
  • Magic Known:
    • Searing Flames of Aed: Using Aed as a medium, Aoife can project streams of deadly fire like that of a flamethrower from the palms of her hands, with Aed positioning itself at a triangulation point in front of them to maximize their output. With this assistance from her familiar, these flames can grow far hotter than any ordinary naked fire could; bearing much more resemblance in temperature to a roaring closed furnace than a regular exposed inferno. Constant projection of these flames can begin to severely exhaust Aoife, however, as Aed drains energy faster than her and she cannot maintain the spell by herself for very long without (figuratively) burning out.
    • Restorative Flames of Ciardha: A traditional spell passed down by Aoife's family, and considered mandatory to master (or at least become adept with) before venturing out as a young adult in the world. These flames carry a more ethereal, bluish-white appearance to them, and accelerate the natural healing process instead of harm. Obviously this means they are of little help when the wound is unable to heal naturally, but it can at least act as suitable first aid in a pinch until proper help arrives. Much like Aed's personal flames, overuse of this ability can drain Aoife's stamina at a rapid rate.
  • Backstory: Raised in a family of old-fashioned sorcerers, Aoife was encouraged to study and train in the realms of traditional magic in order to continue the legacy of her forebearers. Rendered bookish and rather aloof by this upbringing, Aoife's efforts still weren't quite enough for her to reach the same level as others in her family, and as such she was directed towards Notus Academy in order to train them and her familiar. Though a mite tentative at the thought of being surrounded by people just as clueless as her, she has not rejected this instruction—and with Aed's whispered encouragement, she can't help but feel like this is the correct path to take no matter the odds.

Beware the silent ones. Especially if they've got a butterfly who sounds like a supervillain.

Name: Nei Saon

Age: 17

Appearance: Wearing Grandma Sable's lucky scarf that she made for him, which he often wraps directly around his throat to hide the scars that are there (not visible in the image.) The scarf is actually minorly lucky from Grandma Sable's magic, using her Luck-based magic to make items to keep her kids on the street safe, and Nei took the scarf to hide his old injuries.

Personality: One of the first things people would notice about Nei is that he's incredibly quiet. Nei is mute, owing to damage to his neck, and is pretty reserved and incredibly self-aware of his body language, and so he often moves with controlled intent. Underneath the meeker exterior is someone more stern and compassionate, especially towards the poor and petty criminals. He gets antsy around those in authority, and is something of a kleptomaniac, often palming small, unattended valuables out of habit. He's curious, kind and overall good-natured if a bit wary of others, and has an immense well of patience...even if he does show a lack of it at times with sighs and facepalms.

Magic: Dreams, including the deeper thoughts and daydreams.

Soul Familiar: Reverie the Butterfly

Familiar Appearance: Reverie is a slightly-larger-than-normal butterfly, with eerie blue wings that give off a soft glow and a dream-like fuzziness in the space around him and hazy patterns that seem to subtly shift across his wings.

Familiar Personality: To understate it...Reverie is incredibly bombastic and loud, with more than a touch for the theatric and dramatic. He is large, in charge and has a laugh that would make a stereotypical supervillain proud. He's nothing if not enthusiastic and social (even if it's to tell others to tremble in his mighty presence) at least. In many ways he's the exact opposite of the more reserved Nei, and will often go on about how Nei is the one subservient to him, rather than the other way around. At the very least, he's still encouraging of the boy's efforts.

Magic Known:

  • The Idle Mind: By bringing daydreams to the fore of the mind, Nei is able to distract and disorient someone, making them lose focus and let their mind wander, both subtly and overtly.

  • Dream Dive: Nei is able to delve into the unconscious mind of someone, being privy to their deeper thoughts, memories and dreams. He can become a sort of "visual presence" in their mind's eye as well, seeing their own mindscape as if he were there.

Backstory:

  • Nei can't remember much of his early childhood, save for the burning pain in his neck from the scars of claw marks. For as long as he's known, it's been him, Grandma Sable and the rest of the ne'er-do-wells of the streets under her care. Grandma Sable took in the mute at a young age, on the verge of death from the wounds on his neck, and with a stroke of luck nursed him back to health. Though fearful at first, the boy soon developed a family-like attachment to the woman, who soon taught him to read and write, and then put him to work to teach him independence. At first it was begging for some change, but...

  • Grandma Sable was a retired thief and pickpocket but, bored in her old age, had decided to run a crime ring of thieves-for-hire, with the orphaned street kids under her loving care as the working members. Soon, Nei was as swift and sleight-of-hand as could be, palming unattended store objects, picking pockets and committing burglaries on those who were far more well-off than themselves. His efficacy only got better once he manifested Reverie, using his daydream-inducing spells to disorient alerted chasers and find secret hiding spaces in the thoughts of others. Life was good, reasonably comfortable, and filled with friends and an elderly woman who loved them like her own children.

  • But at times, Nei wondered if there was more. Life would be hard for a mute in any other path of life, but as grateful as Nei was to Grandma, he wanted to be more than some petty thief. He wanted to do something of note with his life, to be "out there" as it were. So he saved up what little he could from his independent thievery and, with the help and blessing of Grandma Sable, he enrolled in Notus Academy to learn how to take his skill with magic even further. So, with lucky scarf wrapped around his neck to hide the scars as always, he set off, bidding a fond, tearful farewell to Grandma Sable and the other orphans.

  • Name: Sydney "Sid" Isaeus
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: Sid is a tall young man with an uncommonly fey bone structure. He has a warm complexion and chestnut brown hair, and his eyes are a slightly unsettling light blue framed by thick, neat eyebrows. He favors expensive, understated clothing, particularly thick brocade tunics and high collars fastened at the throat, and tends to wear several layers even in the summer heat.
  • Personality: Sid makes for a useful friend, a dangerous enemy, and an unpredictable acquaintance. He is generally friendly but distant, though he is quick to deride people that displease him. He's very observant of others, though he often pretends to be indifferent to them. These observations are bolstered by his eidetic memory for the written and spoken word, which allows him to in essence remember everything a person has ever said in his presence, for good or ill. Though he doesn't say it, Sid believes that he is smarter than most other people - and, at the same time, isolated from them. As a result, toward those he cares about he often acts less like a friend and more like a patron, doing subtle things to benefit them and advance their agendas without necessarily communicating his regard. Sid despises "braggarts, liars, and fair-weather friends," and favors those who are humble, honest, and loyal; a hypocritical stance considering Sid has a strong vindictive streak and is all too willing to use dubious methods to get what he wants.
  • Magic: Language Magic - Sid can manipulate the written and spoken word and alter its relationship to creatures and objects around it.
  • Soul Familiar: Aesop the Spider
    • Familiar Appearance: Aesop is a puppy-sized spider made up of countless lines of dense prose in dozens of languages, constantly shifting and changing. These words trace Aesop's shape, but do not render her entirely opaque, and it is possible to look through her as she appears to be completely hollow on the inside. The words themselves are mostly too small and too fleeting to be deciphered, but they sometimes detail Sid's internal monologue (luckily almost always in a language that those present do not speak).
    • Familiar Personality: Aesop is extremely timid and sensitive. She can almost always be found clinging to some part of Sid, and will only ever speak to those she trusts completely. When she does speak, though, she is very polite and almost painfully earnest. Praise and kindness make her embarrassingly happy, and criticism can cause her to descend into hysterics. Aesop is very physically affectionate toward Sid, a habit which tends to look a bit disturbing since she is a very large spider.
  • Magic Known:
    • Redefine: By inscribing an object with the proper descriptors, Sid can change its properties and function - with the right words, he can soften stone, make tree branches cut like knives, and cause an empty bowl to fill. As of now this effect is temporary, and the descriptors can't diverge too sharply from the basic nature of the object, but Sid has been working on making this ability stronger and longer-lasting for a while.
    • Oath: Compels a target to follow through on a promise they have made or an action they have claimed they will perform. Currently an Oath is not entirely unbreakable; the target merely suffers a harsh psychic backlash if they break their word.
  • Backstory:

    • Sid was born to a middle-class family in the Principality of Sest, a walled city-state governed by a so-called "meritocratic aristocracy" wherein noble status could be won - and lost - through various tests of skill. As a result, Sid grew up in a highly competitive environment wherein his classmates were opponents and any vulnerability was quickly exploited. Though Sid developed a talent for learning languages at a young age, he was discouraged from pursuing such endeavours since, as his parents proclaimed, that was a path which could not lead to nobility in the Principality. Instead he was urged to study rhetoric, political theory, and the arts, which he did with some reluctance. He eventually became fairly proficient in these fields, and his success in the related tests of skill caused his family's status to rise.

    • However, Sid became increasingly disillusioned with his parents' machinations and with the cruelty of his peers, a cruelty which grew the more successful Sid became. When he manifested Aesop and revealed a talent for Language magic, his parents were first thrilled, then alarmed. Sid used his talents spitefully, punishing the boasting of his peers and sabotaging the tests of skill.

    • The last straw came when Sid managed to win a minor art competition by inscribing the word 'Beautiful' on a piece of scrap paper just before the judging, causing the judges to falsely believe that the scrap paper was a masterful work of art. There was widespread outrage when the spell wore off and the deception was discovered, and his parents hurriedly arranged to send him to Notus Academy to ward off the inevitable angry mob and keep him safely away from the Principality, at least for a while.

Name: Medea Forgetwin-Coulette
Age: 18
Appearance: Medea's a halfway point between her parents; bearing a baseline level of effortless attractiveness and pointed features from her mother and an above average height and robust build from her father. The end result is she looks like someone who could easily called either 'motherly' or 'intimidating' depending on how she's acting at any given moment. She wears her brown hair (another inheritance from her father, her mom's hair is an almost oily black) in a long braid that falls down her back. Her eyes are opalescent, betraying her mother's heritage.

Most of the time Medea dresses casually; in loose-fitting tunics and pants. However now that she's attending Notus Academy she has started wearing a gauntlet, bracer and shoulderplate combination made of silver-coated monster bones on one arm; a gift from her parents and a symbol of the heroics she is destined for.
Personality: Medea is trying to be a lot of things that aren't quite her true self. She tries to put forward a confident and heroic aspect because she knows of her lineage and feels a need to live up to her parent's example. Even though most of the pressure originates from herself, she feels like she has to be heroic or at the very least storied in order to make up for her lackluster power set. But when the pressure is off, Medea lapses into something truer to herself; mostly that involves being very tired, quiet and hungry for attention from her familiar.
Magic: Hospitality
Soul Familiar: Malta

  • Familiar Appearance: Malta is a large snake both in length and just generally being thick in diameter. However, more important is that the snake is made of stuffed cloth like a child's toy or a singular elongated pillow.
  • Familiar Personality: Malta is an utmost host, warm and charming with a quick wit, a smooth, deep voice and a keen sense for what someone needs to be comfortable.
Magic Known:
  • Good Berry Biscuits: With a few moments to weave the energies involved, Medea or Malta creates a white ceramic plate supporting up to ten small mixed-berry cookies. The cookies are nourishing, enough to stave off hunger for a few hours between heartier meals. The plate acts like a mundane ceramic plate however it dissipates into ether a minute after it no longer supports the cookies. Which is still long enough to throw or smash it.
  • Encourage Rest: To those who consent or are injured enough to almost pass out on their own, this spell induces a restful but ultimately mundane sleep.
Backstory: Daughter of renowned heroes Luphise Forgetwin (of the Forge Twins; a pair of elven fire and metal wizards with a shared Stymphalian Pheonix familiar) and Harold Coulette (a Bone caster who rebuked a necromantic lineage to wear the skeletons of monsters as armor), Medea was expected to do great things with her powers when they came in. When it turned out she was a meek child her parents were still hopeful, after all even the quietest lamb could turn out to roar like a lion with magic at its side. While the further revelation of the precise nature of Malta's magic is not an encouraging sign for those expectations, Medea's parents are still both hopeful that she can turn out a capable hero and also understanding if it turns out her aspirations lay elsewhere.

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.
