So you all know the story basically. Fifty years ago a huge rift opened above the world, apparently everywhere in the world directly 'above' people and started raining down a bunch of stuff. Satellites couldn't pick anything up and the scientists of the world scratched their heads in total confusion. The objects let loose fell into two categories, Discs and Drives. The Discs are palm sized metal objects made of an unknown and unbreakable material with a number of grooves indented on one side and a picture on the other. The Drive's were strange armbands that change to fit whoever puts it on and locks there, with a glass case and a 'player' for three discs. When a Disc is put into a Drive is when the magic happens. The Disc contain the powers and abilities of a single fictional character.

Sometimes its Sherlock Holmes, other times you get yourself Smaug from the Hobbit. Its an utter crapshoot and even today there are more discs being found basically all around the world, always on dry land for whatever reason. Maybe the force that sent them didn't like the idea of littering. Who can say? The only seeming limit thats been found is that the Discs don't contain any historical figures, or at least not direct historical figures. Heard there was a guy out west who can turn into Abraham Lincoln but with an axe and superhuman strength. Beats me on that one. Anyway the entire world kind of got out of wack for a bit, about thirty years of pretty much global chaos.

Then stepped in a group that had come together with some of the strongest Discs and Drivers, and basically smacked the world upside its head and told them to get their collective shit together. It was a slow process, but a year after the period of chaos things kind of got amazing. Best minds in all of fiction came together and essentially turned life pretty damn great worldwide. Robots that can deal with most daily chores, climate change and environmental effects put right, yada yada. Doesn't mean there aren't still problems around the world, just that by and large there is less of it to go around.

The worlds two biggest issues at the moment if you were to ask four out of five people would be the Scratchers and even higher up the D.J. The Scratch are a group of troublemakers who want to collect the best and most powerful Discs for ultimately selfish purposes, and are treated as a minor nuisance at the best of times. While some of their number have shown themselves to be dangerous, by and large they are mostly just a bunch of thugs throwing their weight around.

The D.J. is another matter, a mysterious figure that has a hold on the 'Twilight Collection', a number of the most threatening and dangerous Discs in the world. They end up in the hands of desperate people who use them and spread chaos throughout the world. From alien gods to giant monsters, once they are used they will possess their user. To combat these two threats the world has come together to train a new line of defenders, bringing together the best and brightest to fight back the spread of chaos.

So whatcha say kid, you in?

_____________________________

Welcome to Disc Fall, a cross chaos adventure where players take part in a group meant to stem the tide of chaos when fantasy and reality blend together to all sorts of strange effects. Your character has either sought out or been invited to join the 'Defense League' a group that fights against those that would misuse the Discs and Drivers for their own means.

Terms of Importance

  • Disc: One of the two things let out by the Rift fifty years ago, each containing the power and abilities of a character from fiction. No two Discs are the same, however they can be similar. For instance Golden Age Superman wouldn't be the same as Modern Day Superman. It seems as long as there is enough divergence there will be two Discs.

  • Drives: A device attached to an odd armband that fuses to its user and can only be taken off by them. Each Drive has a unique ability attached to it, for instance 'Empower' which can strengthen a Disc, or 'Fuse' which allows two Discs to be added together to make a combined character. Drive users who put in a Disc will totally transform into the character installed on the Disc, with the exception of the Disc itself. The Drive itself can only be used for a certain period of time which equates to the power of the character installed on the Disc itself, and once it reaches a certain stage will be unaccessable until it recharges.

  • Ego Barrier: A hypothetical 'wall' between a Drive user and the character installed on the Disc. It allows access to the skills, powers, and abilities of the character without directly removing any traits from the user.

  • Ego Break: A 'break' in the Ego Barrier that can occur if using a certain Disc with too much power. Will start to leak thoughts and memories associated with the character into the mind of the user.

  • Ego Death: The result of a full Ego Break, where the character installed on the Disc will completely rewrite the mind of the Drive user. Rare outside of Discs 'gifted' by the D.J., through still a frightening possibility.

Character Sheet

  • Name:
  • Age: (17-up as the only ones allowed into the program are legal adults, due to possible Ego Break/Death)
  • Appearance:
  • Personality:
  • Driver Ability: (The unique ability attached to your characters Driver. Speed boosts, fusion, access to an alternate version, think of something creative and fun.)
  • Discs: (1-3 Discs owned by your characters along with a short description of the characters or link to a wiki containing information. Feel free to go powerful, but mind that the GM can and will use the Ego Break system described above for those wanting to put together teams. You can be Superman, but probably only hold them for a few minutes at most.)
  • Background: (Who your character is and what they want.)
  • Etc: (Anything else.)

The Light That Blinds

  • Name: Damien Lee
  • Age: 20
  • Appearance: Happy boi. Stands at 5'8.
  • Personality: Damien is cheerful, energetic, and friendly, making up for a lack of experience with boundless enthusiasm. Unfortunately, he's also rather reckless, charging headlong into dangerous situations without much thought given to things like "strategy" or "consequences". Damien can be scatterbrained at times, and he tends to enjoy combat a bit too much (he's not sure why either, but he does have one theory), but overall, he's a pretty pleasant person.
  • Driver Ability: Overcharge (though Damien himself calls it Final Smash). The way it works is that Damien's Drive is purposefully overloaded with energy, which is channeled into whatever Disc Damien is currently using. The excess energy is then unleashed as a powerful attack, which seems to differ based on the installed Disc (for example, Isabelle is Dream Town Hall). And don't fret—Damien's Ego Barrier is boosted for the duration of the Overcharge, blocking him from the effects of using so much power. The downside? It can't be used consistently: after firing off the Overcharge, it takes an hour for it to cool down.
  • Discs: Damien has two Discs:
    • Isabelle from Animal Crossing, though the abilities granted come from Super Smash Bros. It isn't the most powerful Disc, far from it, but that's not entirely a bad thing; it means that Damien can keep the Disc active for much longer than most people without suffering Ego Break. Altogether, it's low-reward-low-risk, especially when compared to...
    • Dharkon. Damien's other Disc, and one he's reluctant to use for damn good reason. This Disc is considerably more powerful than the Isabelle Disc, and might be one of the most powerful Discs out there...which means Damien can't use it for more than a minute before his Ego Barrier is at risk. Since he really doesn't want to suffer Ego Death and be replaced by an Omnicidal Maniac, the Dharkon Disc is very much "emergencies only".
  • Background: By all accounts, Damien Lee was normal. He was born to normal parents in a normal neighborhood, and had a normal childhood amongst normal people. Sure, he found a Drive when he was seven and accidentally turned himself into an anthropomorphic Shiba Inu when he was twelve, but still. Very normal.
    • Then, one day, Damien discovered an abandoned Disc on the side of the road. Curiosity overrode common sense, and he popped the Disc into his Drive and turned it on—aaaaand next thing he knew, he was several miles tall and had claw-tipped tentacles instead of arms.
    • The resulting freakout lasted only about ten seconds before Damien managed to turn the Disc off, but that was more than enough time to completely wreck the whole street. Dozens were injured, the property damage fees ran high, and Damien was so freaked out that he seriously considered abandoning the Disc right back where he'd found it. Before that could happen, though, the Defense League extended an invitation, much to his surprise. Damien is reasonably sure they're only doing this to keep an eye on the Dharkon Disc, but he accepted nevertheless. Hey, as long as he keeps up a chipper attitude and only uses the Isabelle Disc, what's the worst that could happen?
  • Etc: Damien thinks he might've suffered an Ego Break back when he first used the Dharkon Disc, which would explain his somewhat Blood Knight-ish behavior in combat. He prefers not to dwell on the implications.

I don't think I have time to join another RP, to be quite honest, but this setting is intriguing, and I have a number of worldbuilding questions that might help others in coming up with their own characters:

  • What is the term for people who use Drives and Discs? Does it vary depending on where you are?
  • How does one transform or de-transform using a Drive? Is there a key phrase to say, for example? Does the exact method vary from Drive to Drive?
  • How does one switch between Discs? Does it require de-transforming before transforming using a different Disc? If one cancels one's transformation before they reach their limit, is the recharge time for a given Disc reduced, or does it remain the same?
  • If an individual suffers Ego Death, does the resultant persona still need to use a Drive to access their abilities? In other words, is a person post-Ego Death a normal human other than their personality?
  • What is the status of governments and nations around the world? You said there was some amount of chaos following the opening of the Rift up until a group of powerful individuals stepped in, so were various areas destabilized in the meantime?
  • What is the name of said group of powerful individuals who ushered in this golden era? Are they part of the Defense League, or something separate?
  • Whose oversight does the Defense League operate under? Where is their main base of operations?
  • Will you timeskip past orientation day, or will the player characters start out in or on their way to orientation? Where will they be stationed, and what sort of features will the facility have?
  • Do other agencies sometimes lend out their personnel to the Defense League?

Name: David "Dave" Hampton
Age: 27
Appearance: David tries his best to look his best. He's a little tall for his age with blonde hair kept trimmed short. Since joining the Defense League, he's started wearing round sunglasses and swapping out a former variety of outfits for mild variations on the same pair of jeans and a t-shirt with a stylized Disc on it. He claims the outfit is for 'intimidation purposes'.
Personality: David thinks he's the golden boy of the new Defense League recruits and acts like it. His mind is first and foremost on looking like a good heroic example for whom the rigors of combat look effortless. This breeds a little arrogance when things go his way and yet when they don't he still seems capable of humility... As long as it keeps him in the spotlight.
Driver Ability: All The World's A Dancefloor. David's Driver takes the vague allusions to vinyl discs and music inherent to the whole system and pumps it into the literal. When a Disc is activated using this Drive a halo of sound surrounds David, a soundtrack relevant to the Disc utilized. It's not simply a cosmetic feature either, when David strikes in time to the beat their attacks hit harder.
Discs:

  • Octavia: The songstress Warframe. Octavia's disc is in fact 'fused in' to the Driver and cannot be removed. She is theorized to be responsible for the precise nature of the Driver's Ability, even when another Disc is active. When active she is a strong combatant, getting the most out of her connection to the music through rapidfire shots from her two signature guns and a suite of abilities.
  • Red: The silenced singer. Interacting oddly with the Ego Barrier, instead of Red's canonical voice, David speaks with his own through the Transistor's speakers. In combat, she's a graceful swordsman; plotting graceful Turns to deliver the impact of her blade to her foes.
  • JD: The murderous mortal. Of all three of his Discs, this is the one that David fears using too much. He notes that it is not because of power; JD at best has some gunplay skill and brawling experience but it's very much a human level of such things. No, David fears the JD Disc because he considers the intrusive thoughts innate to the character as dangerous even if there's almost no way that it could cause an Ego Break on its own. And yet, for some reason, he has decided to keep the Disc close, just in case.
Background: Dave always knew he was a bit special ever since he found his Drive and with it the melded-in Disc of Octavia while walking home from school. After obtaining said Drive and figuring out how it worked, he started attempting some small-time vigilante work under the guise of Octavia, in the process finding the Red disc in a run-down warehouse and claiming JD off of a sketchy-looking criminal David brought in.
  • Of course, vigilante work is a little illegal so once people started to clue into the fact that local gamer David Hampton was in fact a Drive-user, he decided to actually get certified to be a crime-fighter and join the Defense League.
Etc: David has an odd habit of talking to his Discs as though they were individuals rather than inanimate impressions of power.

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

NOTE/EDIT: I didn't notice the "Direct Historical Figure" rule in the first post when I was reading it until now. However, the Fate Series is known for taking creative liberties with history every now and then and I think FGO Anastasia might be different enough from her IRL version to count, but if it doesn't, my bad and I'll simply replace the Disc character with someone else.

  • Name: Regina Grace
  • Age: 23
  • Appearance:
    • Medium length dark brown hair
    • Light blue eyes
    • Wears grey glasses
    • Wears a grey wool jacket over a white shirt
    • Wears darkish grey jeans
    • Around 5'1 feet tall and is quite thin
Personality:
  • Is quite shy and likes to keep to herself
  • However, she is dedicated to completing a goal (whether it'll be doing research on something or doing a mission)
  • Prefers to think over things and come up with plans, even if that leads to overthinking
  • Stoic in front of everyone but in private, a cheerful person who's passionate about her hobbies
  • Not the best at getting social clues
  • Driver Ability: Royal Blooded; it charges her Driver and grants her a single, powerful ability of a fictional character of royal/noble descent (for example, she'll gain Saber's Excalibur and be able to fire off the Noble Phantasm that comes with it). However, depending on the ability, it'll last between 15-30 minutes and leaves her more susceptible to Ego Breaking.
  • Disc:
    • Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova (Fate/Grand Order portrayal): A Caster Servant who has Viy serving as her familiar and one of her two Noble Phantasms, giving her powerful ice-based abilities. Due to Casters not needing too much magical energy in Fate lore, Regina can do several decently hitting ice attacks without worrying too much about energy. However, to do either Noble Phantasm (Viy, Viy, Viy and Sumerki Kremlin), she needs a lot of energy and upon activating them, would lead to her Driver needing to recharge for an hour and similar to Royal Blooded, become more susceptible to Ego Breaking. Additionally, if Viy isn't protecting her and/orhasn't set up Sumerki Kremlin, Regina is quite fragile and can get easily taken out by anyone with decent strength. Also, as you would've expected, she isn't affected by the cold at all.
  • Background:
    • Regina Grace was a regular woman who spent her entire life in the UK. However, as anyone can attest, she's obsessed with historical royalty, which may or may not have to do with the fact she was diagnosed with Autism from a young age. Her particular, all-time favorite royal happened to be Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova, the youngest daughter of Nicholas II who was tragically executed along with her family in the aftermath of the 1917 October Russian Revolution. She had no idea why she's obsessed with that Grand Duchess, but that's just the way things are.
    • On a rainy day in Winchester, Regina was taking a walk when she found a Driver that already had a Disc in it. She thought about whether or not she should take it, as she knew how powerful and dangerous they can be, plus she didn't want to cause any unwanted attention. She decided to not take them and simply report them to the Defense League. However, she saw a member of the Scratchers running towards it, screaming at her to not take it. Panicking as she's aware of the chaos the Scratchers are known for doing, she grabbed the Driver and it latched unto her.
    • Suddenly, she transformed into FGO Anastasia and Viy quickly dealt with the Scratcher, ripping him apart with its cold claws. Once the Scratcher was finished, Regina became super excited as she'd became a version of Anastasia (it also helped she plays FGO on a daily basis and max-Grailed 'Nastya in the game) but it quickly turned into fear as she realized what Viy did and the trouble she'll get in. However, the Defense League showed up and offered her to join them. She accepted it since she wanted to be able to do some good with her Anastasia Disc.
  • ETC: Regina was also offered several other Discs (such as Lian and Edelgard) but declined due to feeling that'll she's only able to handle one combat-orientated Disc at a time.

Name: donovan sanviento

Age: 18

Appearance: Brown hair, pale face, green shirt and white hoodie, blue jeans and black shoes, has a medical eye patch in the right eye

Personality: tranquil guy and doesn't seem to take anything too seriously unless its life or death seems to be drowsy all the time but using discs seems to energize him a bit

Driver Ability: Requip depending on the disc-equipped it gives Donovan an item or function that the character could reasonably have ( more slugs for Eli, ultimate forms for ben, etc)

Discs: Eli Shane:[1] slugterra best sluglinger armed with many slugs and his mecha beast lk-3(or lucky), this is generally Donovan go-to disc for common threats

Ben Tennyson:[2] the wielder of the Omnitrix able to transform into different aliens along with other functions, when push comes to shove Donovan will go to this disc to neutralize the threat

Background: Raised in a pretty poor family he never had much and passed most of his childhood doing works around so they could have enough for rent and food until one day he found a driver in his bed seemingly crashing through the roof he quickly put it in his wrist and hides it from the rest of the family as it was the only thing that is truly his, in one of his jobs carrying cement sacks he found a disc he grabbed it and tried it what was the worst that could happen turns out he got a green watch after fiddling with it he transformed into a red four-armed monster, instead of doing anything reasonable like informing his parents he just continued his job carrying cement sacks working 4 times as fast and earning more payment, as a result, this time his family could eat something tastier and also tell them about the whole driver and disc, after practicing with the disc and finding another disc he would keep practicing until he could join the defense league for a more profiting pay

(I hope I'm doing the formating right)
